AbstractThe synthesis, microstructure, and properties of high purity dense bulk Mo2TiAlC2 ceramics were studied. High purity Mo2TiAlC2 powder was synthesized at 1873 K starting from Mo, Ti, Al, and graphite powders with a molar ratio of 2:1:1.25:2. The synthesis mechanism of Mo2TiAlC2 was explored by analyzing the compositions of samples sintered at different temperatures. It was found that the Mo2TiAlC2 phase was formed from the reaction among Mo3Al2C, Mo2C, TiC, and C. Dense Mo2TiAlC2 bulk sample was prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1673 K under a pressure of 40 MPa. The relative density of the dense sample was 98.3%. The mean grain size was 3.5 μm in length and 1.5 μm in width. The typical layered structure could be clearly observed. The electrical conductivity of Mo2TiAlC2 ceramic measured at the temperature range of 2–300 K decreased from 0.95 × 106 to 0.77 × 106 Ω–1·m–1. Thermal conductivity measured at the temperature range of 300–1273 K decreased from 8.0 to 6.4 W·(m·K)–1. The thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of Mo2TiAlC2 measured at the temperature of 350–1100 K was calculated as 9.0 × 10–6 K–1. Additionally, the layered structure and fine grain size benefited for excellent mechanical properties of low intrinsic Vickers hardness of 5.2 GPa, high flexural strength of 407.9 MPa, high fracture toughness of 6.5 MPa·m1/2, and high compressive strength of 1079 MPa. Even at the indentation load of 300 N, the residual flexural strength could hold 84% of the value of undamaged one, indicating remarkable damage tolerance. Furthermore, it was confirmed that Mo2TiAlC2 ceramic had a good oxidation resistance below 1200 K in the air.

Si/Al composites with different Si particle sizes were fabricated using spark plasma sintering process for electronic packaging. The density, thermal conductivity, coefficient of thermal expansion and flexural strength of the composites were investigated. Effect of Si particle size on structure and properties of the Si/Al composites were studied. The results showed that the Si/Al composites synthesized by spark plasma sintering were composed of Si and Al. Al was uniformly distributed among the Si phase, leading to a high thermal conductivity (>120 W/m·k). The relative density of the Si/Al composites decreased with increasing Si particle size. Small Si particle size produced small grains, leading to a low coefficient of thermal expansion and a high strength. There is an optimal matching among the thermal conductivity, coefficient of thermal expansion and flexural strength when the Si particle size was 44 um.

HfB2–15 vol% MoSi2 composites were produced from powder mixtures and densified through different techniques, namely hot pressing and spark plasma sintering. Dense materials were obtained at 1900 °C by hot pressing and at 1750 °C by spark plasma sintering. Microstructure and mechanical properties were compared. The most relevant result was for high-temperature strength: independent of the processing technique, the flexural strength in air at 1500 °C was higher than 500 MPa.

TiCN-based cermets with different amounts of SiC nano-whiskers were prepared by spark plasma sintering. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-prepared cermets were investigated. X-ray diffraction revealed that there were no SiC peaks detected, turning out some peaks of new carbide and silicate hard phases. Scanning electron microscopy indicated that there were more and more pores in the cermets with increasing amount of SiC whisker added, and the fracture mechanism of the cermets was mainly inter-granular fracture. With increasing addition amount of nano-SiC whisker, the hardness and flexural strength of the cermets increased first and decreased then, presenting the highest hardness (2170 HV) and flexural strength (750 MPa), respectively, when the addition content of nano-whiskers is 2.5 wt%.

In this work, we fabricated ZrB2-SiC-ZrSi2 composites containing different fractions (0.5-5 vol.%) of ZrSi2 by spark plasma sintering at 1600 °C under a uniaxial pressure of 30 MPa. The addition effect of ZrSi2 on the composition, microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated. The results indicated that the densification of ZrB2-SiC-ZrSi2 composites could be enhanced along with the increase of the added fraction of ZrSi2, with its relative density reaching the maximum of about 85.6% when 3 vol.% of ZrSi2 was added. The hardness of the composites would decrease after the addition of ZrSi2 in the range of 960-1200 HV5. The flexural strength initially increased and then decreased with the addition of ZrSi2, reaching a maximum of about 330 MPa when 3 vol.% of ZrSi2 was added.

In this work, we characterized the mechanical and electrical properties of zirconia-based ceramic nanocomposites reinforced with 30 and 40 vol. % TiN and fabricated by spark plasma sintering. In addition to their improved mechanical performance, these compositions have sufficient electrical conductivity to allow wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM). The influence of WEDM variables on the roughness and the mechanical strength of samples was analyzed after each cut. The experimental results showed that the roughness of machined surfaces can be reduced by variations in WEDM manufacturing regimes, and, consequently, a drastic drop in flexural strength of workpieces can be avoided. Furthermore, the composites with higher content and homogeneous distribution of the conductive phase exhibited better surface quality as well.

The effect of calcination on the mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite and zirconia composite (HAp:ZrO2= 30:70, 50:50, 70:30 mass%) was investigated. The calcination of ball-milled mixture in air at 900°C for 0, 2 and 4 hours increased the crystallinity. Then, it was assigned that the particles form of hydroxyapatite was changed from needle-like to sphere-like by calcination. The calcined mixture was sintered by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1200°C with a pressure of 40MPa for 5 minutes. The calcination process caused the enhancement of flexural strength of the composite.
