In the basal planes of the orthorhombic YBa2Cu3O7-X compound with x=0.07, which has a Tc of around 90K, chains of copper-oxygen are formed along the [010] direction. Previous investigations on the variation of Tc with oxygen content have shown the existence of a plateau at Tc = 60K for x=0.3 to 0.4, suggesting the presence of a separate phase. This phase has also been identified to be orthorhombic, but with a 2x superlattice along [100] of the parent structure, and the superlattice has been attributed to the formation of alternating copper-oxygen and copper-vacancy chains. In our work, we have studied the chain ordering phenomenon by electron microscopy and neutron diffraction on samples with different oxygen contents. We report here some of our electron microscopy findings for samples with x=0.4.Powder samples of YBa2Cu3O7-X were prepared by controlled re-oxidation of previously reduced material. For electron microscopy, the sample was dry ground using a mortar and pestle in a dry nitrogen atmosphere without the use of any solvent and transferred dry onto holey carbon film for examination in a Philips CM12 microscope.

Racemic ketoprofen (KP) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) powder samples from co-precipitation (1), evaporation (2), and heating-under-reflux (3) were analysed using X-ray techniques and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. On the basis of NMR studies carried out in an aqueous solution, it was found that in the samples obtained by methods 1 and 2, there were large excesses of β-CD in relation to KP, 10 and 75 times, respectively, while the sample obtained by method 3 contained equimolar amounts of β-CD and KP. NMR results indicated that KP/β-CD inclusion complexes were formed and the estimated binding constants were approximately 2400 M−1, showing that KP is quite strongly associated with β-CD. On the other hand, the X-ray single-crystal technique in the solid state revealed that the (S)-KP/β-CD inclusion complex with a stoichiometry of 2:2 was obtained as a result of heating-under-reflux, for which the crystal and molecular structure were examined. Among the methods used for the preparation of the KP/β-CD complex, only method 3 is suitable.

Determining the age of ancient architectural and cultural monuments is a significant scientific problem. An approach based on the transformation of portlandite into calcite and subsequent recrystallization of calcite is considered, which allows for estimating the relative age of ancient brickworks for local groups of historic buildings based on the results of diffraction studies of powder samples of carbonate mortars and measurements of samples with a known age. This article presents the results of the study of lime mortars of ancient brickwork. Under natural conditions, the process of transformation of portlandite into calcite takes from 100 to 200 years. The rate of this process is influenced by temperature, humidity, peculiarities of interaction with carbon dioxide contained in the air, etc. Examples show that portlandite is completely transformed into calcite in masonry mortars of the 18th century and that portlandite is not found in older mortars. It was determined that after the transformation of portlandite into calcite, an increase in the degree of recrystallization of calcite is observed, which manifests itself in powder diffraction patterns in the relative broadening of the diffraction peak of calcite hkl 104. In a detailed study, an estimate of the peak width at half maximum (FWHM) associated with the degree of crystallinity is effective. The actual data are given, which show that in older lime mortars the degree of recrystallization of calcite is higher than in younger ones. This fact makes it possible to indirectly determine the relative age of brickwork and masonry of various buildings of architectural heritage, which is especially relevant for the objects with the use of lime mortars of the northern provinces of the Byzantine Oecumene and other periods of various cultures.

Abstract Health-care workers, laboratorians and overdose prevention centers rely on commercial immunoassays to detect the presence of fentanyl; however, the cross-reactivity of fentanyl analogs with these kits is largely unknown. To address this, we conducted a pilot study evaluating the detection of 30 fentanyl analogs and metabolites by 19 commercially available kits (9 lateral flow assays, 7 heterogeneous immunoassays and 3 homogenous immunoassays). The analogs selected for analysis were compiled from the Drug Enforcement Administration and National Forensic Laboratory Information System reports from 2015 to 2018. In general, the immunoassays tested were able to detect their intended fentanyl analog and some closely related analogs, but more structurally diverse analogs, including 4-methoxy-butyryl fentanyl and 3-methylfentanyl, were not well detected. Carfentanil was only detected by kits specifically designed for its recognition. In general, analogs with group additions to the piperidine, or bulky rings or long alkyl chain modifications in the N-aryl or alkyl amide regions, were poorly detected compared to other types of modifications. This preliminary information is useful for screening diagnostic, forensic and unknown powder samples for the presence of fentanyl analogs and guiding future testing improvements.

The bio-flocculation ability of UTEX 2341 was studied for the purpose of improving microalgae harvesting efficiency to cut the high cost of biofuel production. The algae cells of UTEX 2341 cultured under heterotrophic and municipal wastewater conditions were found to have better self-flocculation ability, with flocculation rates of 92% and 85% at 2 h, respectively. Moreover, the flocculation rates of 16 freeze-dried microalgae powder samples cultured under different stress conditions were 0~72% with an algae powder dosage of 35 mg L−1. The flocculation efficiency of DIM, DCd1, DT28, and L6S was stable under different pH of 3~9 and temperatures of 15~50 °C. For samples of IM, LCd0.6, LMn2, and LZn2, the flocculation efficiency decreased or increased respectively with increased pH or temperatures. Though the flocculation properties of the eight samples showed wide differences, their flocculant compositions were almost the same with unknown components occupying large proportions. More studies needed to be further carried out to reveal the flocculation mechanisms and analyze the flocculation abilities in practical application, which would be conducive to future large-scale application of the bio-flocculation method and also cost reduction.

In this work, Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 materials were produced by an economically viable and time efficient water atomization process. The powder samples were heat treated at different temperatures (673 K, 723 K, 743 K, 773 K, 803 K, and 823 K) followed by spark plasma sintering (SPS). It was found that the Te evaporated slightly at 723 K and 743 K and became dominated at 773 K, 803 K, and 823 K, which severely influences the thermoelectric properties. The electrical conductivity was significantly improved for over 803 K heat treated samples due to the remarkable improvement in hole concentration. The power factor values for the 803 K and 823 K samples were significantly larger at T > 350 K compared to other samples. Consequently, the peak ZT of 0.92 at 350 K was obtained for the 803 K sample, which could be useful in commercial thermoelectric power generation.

Nonaqueous dispersions of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles, sterically stabilized with polyisobutylene (PIB), were prepared with naphthalene (N) groups covalently incorporated into the PMMA chains. These materials have a complex morphology of phase-separated PMMA and PIB microdomains, with the N groups in the PMMA microphases. The phosphorescence intensity and decay times of the N groups were measured as a function of temperature over the range 77–295 K for dispersions in methylcyclohexane and for freeze-dried powder samples. An Arrhenius treatment of the radiationlcss decay rate showed a change in slope at −35 °C. The activation energy for the radiationless decay process is 3.8 kcal/mol in the −35 – +22 °C temperature region, identical to that found for pure PMMA by nmr for chain motion associated with the a-methyl relaxation process. We believe that the phosphorescence experiment is sensitive to the diffusion of oxygen and other impurities in the sample. These rates increase as the temperature is raised, enhancing the rate of phosphorescence quenching. These experiments indicate that phosphorescence measurements on labelled samples are suitable for studying relaxation processes within individual microphases of a polyphasic composite material.
