The movement of a piston rod in a pneumatic cylinder is directly affected by the air humidity in the atmosphere, especially in the case of piston rods without any means of protection or grease on their surfaces. In a pneumatic cylinder system, the friction between the piston rod and the rod seal is sliding friction, and it has a significant value that varies with the variation in the moisture on the piston rod’s surface. In this paper, an investigation of the friction characteristics of piston rods and rod seals in a pneumatic cylinder was carried out with different humidity and velocity values to understand the effect of lubricants on the moving parts of pneumatic systems in humid environments, where the friction characteristics of the displacements corresponding to the static and dynamic friction forces were displayed on a measuring device. The research results showed that the static friction forces tended to decrease by [Formula: see text] and that the dynamic friction forces tended to decrease by [Formula: see text] when the relative humidity increased from 51% to 99% at different velocities between 5 and 100 mm/s.

The instantaneous normal motion between bodies in a sliding contact is an important variable in determining dynamic friction under unsteady sliding conditions. In order to model friction under dynamic conditions, it is therefore necessary to combine a dynamic model of the sliding system with an accurate model of the friction process. In the present work, the nonlinear normal dynamics of a friction test apparatus are described by a linearized model at a particular steady loading and sliding condition in a mixed or boundary-lubricated regime. The geometry is a line contact. The Hertzian bulk contact compliance and film and asperity damping and stiffness characteristics are included as discrete elements. In Part I of the paper, a fifth-order model is developed for the normal dynamics of the system, using both the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA) and classical experimental modal analysis techniques. In Part II, this system model is combined with a friction model, developed independently, to describe dynamic friction forces under both harmonic and impulsive applied normal loads.

The article shows importance of use of dump plowing for formation and maintenance of soil structure and pest control and diseases of cultivated plants. A significant drawback of plowing process is indicated, which is its high energy intensity. To reduce energy consumption, it is proposed to use rotating field boards, which allow replacing sliding friction forces with rolling friction forces. The article presents a description of design of plow’s body with rotating field board and notes that without a preliminary analytical study and justification of initial parameters, their use may not be effective. Analytical relations connecting value of radius of rotating field of board, rate of collapse of soil, allowable value of indentation of field board into soil and specific force of cutting resistance of soil that ability to use it for baseline technical parameters. To analyze obtained dependence, the article presents its graphical solution. The authors obtained an expression for determining the value of arm’s force of reference reaction from soil to balance a plow’s body, in addition, this indicator can be used to adjust a body when working on soils with different physical and mechanical parameters and at different depths.

In the present paper dynamic friction processes in seals are investigated. The undesired stick-slip effect of these components under real technical conditions is analyzed. Starting with the basics of stick-slip vibrations the development of an advanced seal design with improved properties is presented that prevents stick-slip. Finally, an optimization based on the extensive but simple stability analysis is shown by an expanded theory of stick-slip simulations.

This paper describes an experimental method of determining sliding friction forces in a pneumatic actuator. Several empirical and semi-empirical friction models are evaluated using measured friction force data. A repeatability study is also performed to qualitatively assess friction randomness and a change in friction regimes.

As the size of contacting and sliding tribosystems decrease, intermolecular or adhesive forces become significant partly due to nanometer size surface roughness. The presence of adhesion has a major influence on the interfacial contact and friction forces as well as the microtribosystem dynamics and thus influences the overall dynamic friction behavior. In this paper, a dynamic friction model that explicitly includes adhesion, interfacial damping and the system dynamics for realistic rough surfaces was developed. The results show that the amplitude and mean value of the time varying normal contact and friction forces increase in the presence of adhesion under continuous contact conditions. Also, due to the attractive nature of adhesion, its presence delays or eliminates the occurrence of loss of contact. Furthermore, in the presence of significant adhesion, dynamic friction behavior is significantly more complicated compared to the no adhesion case, and the dynamic friction coefficient predictions may be misleading. Thus, it is more appropriate to discuss dynamic friction force instead of dynamic friction coefficient under dynamic conditions.

This paper considers the investigations into adhesion, contact mechanics metal erosion effects, wear and tare as a result of the effects of frictional forces. Mechanical components rely on friction for the transformation and delivery of energy from point A to point B. This requires the knowledge of combined energies as well as their associated dynamic models and ancillary parameters. Adhesion, contact, friction and wear are major problems limiting both the fabrication yield and lifetime of any devices. Since it is the area of real contact, which determines the sliding friction, adhesion interaction may strongly affect the friction force even when no adhesion can be detected in a pull-off experiment. Therefore a good scientific dynamic modelling of friction forces is a prerequisite for the understanding and monitoring of friction adverse effect on mechanical systems for good maintenance purposes.

The atomistic mechanisms are proposed for the origin of the static and the dynamic friction forces. The mechanism for the origin of the static friction force resembles the mechanical locking mechanism in a surface roughness model. The origin of the dynamic friction force is formulated as a problem of how the given translational kinetic energy dissipates into the internal relative motions of constituent atoms of bodies during sliding. From studying that the available phase space volume of the translational motion becomes negligible small for a large system size, compared with that of the internal motions, it is concluded that the energy dissipation occurs irreversibly from the translational motion to the internal motions. A phenomenon of superlubricity, where two solid bodies move relatively with no resistance, is discussed.
