Abstract: Excavators are popular earthmoving vehicles that consists of a bucket, arm, rotating cab, and movable tracks. These components provide superior digging power and mobility, allowing this heavy equipment to perform a variety of functions. Currently, Industries which uses crawler excavators having Carbon Steel material for movable track roller are facing problem of strength, weight and high cost of track roller material and processes. Hence, selection of proper relevant material and its manufacturing processes will be done which could increase strength as well as decrease weight and overall cost of excavator under carriage track roller assembly parts. Thus, after suitable identification of materials and manufacturing process of track roller assembly parts, optimization and analysis will be done to confirm selected materials. In the present work, by using Taguchi approach, the turning of EN8D carbon steel is carried out in order to optimize the turning process parameters. The present paper deals with the optimization of selected process parameters, i.e., Speed, Feed rate, Depth of cut. Taguchi orthogonal array is designed with three levels of machining parameters and different experiments are done using L9 (3^3) orthogonal array. Taguchi method stresses the importance of studying the response variation using the signal to noise (S/N) ratio, resulting the minimization of quality characteristic variation due to uncontrollable parameter. Predicted value of cutting parameters and verification test values are valid when compared with the optimum value. It is found that optimum value of verification test is within the limits of predicted value and the objective of the work is full filled. Keywords: Crawler excavator, track roller, Taguchi method, Optimization, EN8D carbon steel, signal to noise (S/N) ratio etc.

Turning process is a primary process in engineering industries and optimization of process parameters enhance the machining performance. Inconel 718 is a nickel-based superalloy, widely found applications in the manufacturing of blades, sheets and discs in aircraft engines and rocket engines. It provides toughness at low temperature, with stand high mechanical stresses at elevated temperature and creep resistance. In this work, turning process is carried out on Inconel 718 with micro whole textured cutting inserts filled with solid lubricants. Three different solid lubricants are used namely molybdenum-di-sulfide (MoS2), tungsten-di-sulfide (WS2) and calcium-di-fluoride (CaF2). Experiments are performed as per L9 orthogonal array. Statistical approaches such as orthogonal array, Signal-to-Noise (S/N) ratio and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) are used to find the importance and effects of machining parameters. In this study, input parameters included are feed, cutting speed and depth of cut and output parameter includes surface roughness. Optimization of process parameters is carried out and the significance is estimated. The result suggested that WS2 followed by MoS2 and CaF2 given good surface finish value. Also, solid lubricant in machining enhances the sustainability in manufacturing.

Wire Electrical Discharge Machining is a manufacturing process whereby a desired shape is obtained using electrical discharges (or) by repetitive spark cycle. Precision and intricate machining are the strengths. Machining parameters tables provided by the machine tool manufacturers often do not meet the operator requirements. Selection of optimum machining and machining parameters combinations is needed for obtaining higher cutting efficiency and accuracy. In this present study, machining is done using Wire-Cut EDM and optimization of surface roughness is done using Taguchis design of experiments. Experimentation was planned as per Taguchis L16 orthogonal array. Each experiment has been performed under different cutting conditions of gap voltage, pulse ON time, and pulse OFF time and Wire feed. Dielectric fluid pressure, wire speed, wire tension, resistance and cutting length are taken as fixed parameters. Inconel 800 was selected as a work material to conduct the experiments. From experimental results, the surface roughness was determined for each machining performance criteria. Signal to noise ratio was applied to measure the performance characteristics deviating from the actual value. Finally, experimental confirmation was carried out to identify the effectiveness of this proposed method. Keywords: Optimization; Taguchis L-16 Orthogonal Array; Surface Roughness; S/N Ratio.

Surface roughness is often considered the main purpose in contemporary computer numerical controlled (CNC) machining industry. Most existing optimization researches for CNC finish turning were either accomplished within certain manufacturing circumstances or achieved through numerous equipment operations. Therefore, a general deduction optimization scheme is deemed to be necessary for the industry. In this paper, the cutting depth, feed rate, speed, and tool nose runoff with low, medium, and high level are considered to optimize the surface roughness for finish turning based onL9(34)orthogonal array. Additionally, nine fuzzy control rules using triangle membership function with respective to five linguistic grades for surface roughness are constructed. Considering four input and twenty output intervals, the defuzzification using center of gravity is then completed. Thus, the optimum general fuzzy linguistic parameters can then be received. The confirmation experiment result showed that the surface roughness from the fuzzy linguistic optimization parameters is significantly advanced compared to that from the benchmark. This paper certainly proposes a general optimization scheme using orthogonal array fuzzy linguistic approach to the surface roughness for CNC turning with profound insight.

Manufacturing a defect free (quality) product is playing a vital role in today’s globally competitive, customer oriented era. Meeting the demand of the market by producing sufficient quantity is another challenge. Achieving greater production rates without compromising on quality, increases the complexity of the task. Adopting modern manufacturing methods like CNC turning are essential to meet the above requirements. EN19 is an important member in the family of alloy steels, which has a wide variety of applications in automobile and machine tool industries. Optimization of machining parameters is crucial in obtaining the required outputs such as quality and productivity. In this work, optimization of CNC turning parameters for machining EN19 alloy steel is performed. The number of experiments was designed using face centred central composite based response surface methodology with varied independent process parameters namely cutting speed, feed and depth of cut. After designing the experiments, the performance measures such as surface roughness of the test samples and Material Removal Rate (MRR) is calculated using the existing formulae. The influence of parameters on MRR and surface roughness are determined by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and for significance interactions of the process parameters are also considered. Using MINITAB 17 software analysis is performed. Further, regression analysis has been done and second order mathematical model is obtained. Using desirability approach, optimization is carried out.
