Effects of dietary supplementation of vitamins D3 and E on quality characteristics of pigs and longissimus muscle antioxidative capacity

Abstract. The effects of addition of vitamin E to pig diet and of calcium ascorbate injection in meat on the antioxidative status and meat quality (longissimus muscle) of pigs were investigated. The treatment consisted of supplementation with vitamin E (500 mg α-tocopheryl acetate/kg diet) for a minimum of 30 days to growing-finishing pigs before slaughter. Furthermore, meat samples (longissimus muscle) were injected with 10% by weight of a 1.5% calcium ascorbate solution. The dietary supplementation of fat soluble antioxidant vitamin E significantly (P<0.05) increased the concentration of α-tocopherol in meat (longissimus muscle). Lipid oxidation measured as TBARS, and antioxidative capacity (Fe2+/ascorbate induced) of meat were significantly (P<0.05) influenced by the supplementation with vitamin E, and the pH1 and driploss was improved. Water soluble antioxidant calcium ascorbate, injected in meat, increased the concentration of calcium (P<0.05) and ascorbic acid (P<0.05), and stabilized the colour ("a" value; P<0.05) in chill-stored meat and improved (P<0.05) the antioxidative capacity (Fe2+/ascorbate induced). Further research is needed to optimise the dosage.

Carcass quality characteristics were measured on 511 steers of 4 breeds that were destined for the Japanese market. All steers had carcass measurements taken at the 10th/11th rib interface, while 103 steers had additional measurements made on the same characteristics at the 5th/6th rib interface. Australian marbling score, longissimus muscle area, intramuscular fat percentage, intramuscular water content, Japanese intermuscular fat thickness, Japanese subcutaneous fat thickness, Japanese rib thickness, and meat pH were measured in the study. These measurements allowed the phenotypic relationships between the different carcass quality traits measured at the 10th/11th rib interface to be calculated. Significant positive correlations were observed among measurements of carcass fatness, and significant negative correlations were observed between carcass fatness and carcass water content. Angus and Murray Grey cattle had higher levels of marbling and intramuscular fat than Hereford and Poll Hereford cattle The data enabled Australian, USDA, and Japanese marbling standards to be compared on the basis of intramuscular fat percentage determined by an ether extraction process. Differences between the same carcass characteristics taken at 5th/6th and 10/11th rib interfaces of the longissimus dorsi were estimated from the 103 steers measured at both sites. Correlations between the rib sites were high for marbling, intramuscular fat, and intramuscular water, but low for longissimus muscle area, intermuscular fat thickness, and pH.

Abstract Essential oils are plant-derived aromatic volatile oils, and they contain bioactive compounds that have been shown to improve poultry nutrition. In this study, we investigated the effects of oregano essential oil (OEO) on intestinal antioxidative capacity, immunity, and gut microbiota of young yellow-feathered chickens. A total of nine hundred and sixty 1-d-old female Qingyuan partridge chickens were randomly allocated to four treatment groups with six replicates of 40 birds each, and the feeding trial was lasted for 30 d. The controls were fed on a basal diet without in-feed antibiotics; the birds in the antibiotic group were fed the basal diet supplemented with 20 mg/kg virginiamycin; the remaining birds were fed the basal diet containing 150 or 300 mg/kg OEO, respectively. Dietary supplementation with 150 or 300 mg/kg OEO increased average daily feed intake (P = 0.057) and average daily gain (P &lt; 0.05). The activities of glutathione peroxidase and total antioxidative capacity in plasma, jejuna, and ileal mucosa were increased by OEO supplementation (P &lt; 0.05), with a trend of lower jejunal content of malonaldehyde (P = 0.062). Moreover, dietary OEO increased the content of secretory immunoglobulin A (P = 0.078) and the relative expression of Claudin 1, Mucin 2, and Avain beta-defensin 1 in ileum (P &lt; 0.05). Sequencing data of 16S rRNA indicated that dietary OEO increased the relative abundance of Firmicutes phylum, and Clostridium and Lactobacillus genera, and decreasing that of Romboutsia. Functional analyses indicated that microbial amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism, replication, and repair systems were higher in OEO groups than those of controls and antibiotic treatment. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with OEO enhanced growth performance, alleviated local oxidative stress in intestine, improved production of natural antibodies, and favorably modulated intestinal microbiota composition.
