Mg-xZr damping alloys (x=0.6, 1.5, 2.5, 5, mass %) were prepared by PM (powder metallurgy ) technology, and effects of Zr contents on microstructure, mechanical properties and damping capacities of Mg-xZr damping alloys were researched by three-point bending test and DMA, etc. The results show that the microstructure become into strip-shaped morphology, more granular particles appear in the grain boundaries or inside grains, and the grains are more refined with the increase of Zr additions. Micro-hardness and bending strength of the Mg-xZr damping alloys increase with increasing addition of Zr, and reach the maximum value with Zr addition of 2.5%. The damping capacities of Mg-xZr alloys increase slowly with the temperature from 27°C to 100°C, and increase rapidly above 100°C. The damping peaks appear at temperature of 160°C. Mg-5%Zr alloy exhibits the highest damping capacity, and its tanf value reaches to 0.084. The temperature of the damping peak increases with increasing frequencies, showing the characteristic of relaxation damping.

Severe plastic deformation can be produced by repetitive upsetting-extrusion process. Using the repetitive upsetting-extrusion (RUE) process at decreasing temperature, the Mg-12.0Gd-4.5Y-2.0Zn-0.4Zr (wt %) alloy was deformed by different RUE passes and then heat treated. The microstructure, texture and mechanical properties of the alloy were compared and analyzed. The results demonstrate that with the increase of deformation passes, the coarse grains of the alloy decreased, the dynamic recrystallization fraction increased, and the dynamic recrystallized grains phagocytized the original grains. This can promote the continuous refinement of the grains and the microstructure uniformity. The maximum texture intensity of the (0001) basal plane decreased significantly with the increase of processing passes and the dispersion degree of pole figure increased. The orientation of dynamic recrystallized grains was randomly distributed to weaken texture. Due to the refinement of microstructure and the weakening of texture, the tensile strength and yield strength of the alloy obviously increased at room temperature. The mechanical properties of the alloy reached the highest after 3 passes and heat treatment.

The damping capacity and mechanical properties of Mg-6Al-1Zn alloy after heat treatment were investigated. The damping characteristics of un-heat-treated, solution treated, and aged Mg-6Al-1Zn specimens were determined by measuring the damping ratio and the logarithmic decrement of free vibrations of a bending beam clamped at one side. The microstructural evaluations confirmed that theβ-Mg17Al12phase was reprecipitated after aging and increased with an increase in aging time. The peak level of damping ratio and logarithmic decrement was obtained after 34 hr of aging time, over which the damping capacity declined according to increasing amount of strong pining points.

Since the discovery in 1984 by Shechtman et al. of crystals which display apparent five-fold symmetry, extensive effort has been given to establishing a theoretical basis for the existence of icosahedral phases (eg.2.). Several other investigations have been centered on explaining these observations based on twinning of cubic crystals (eg.3.). Recently, the existence of a stable, equilibrium phase T2Al6 Li3Cu) possessing an icosahedral structure has been reported in the Al-Li-Cu system(4-6).In the present study an Al-2.6wt.%Li-l.5wt.%Cu-0.lwt.%Zr alloy was heat treated at 300°C for 100hrs. to produce large T2 precipitates. Convergent Beam Electron Diffraction (CBED) patterns were obtained from two-fold, three-fold, and apparent five-fold axes of T2 particles. Figure 1 shows the five-fold symmetric zero layer CBED pattern obtained from T2 particles.

Ni-rich alloys based on approximate ternary composition Ni-8Mo-15A1 (at%) are presently under investigation in an attempt to study the contribution, if any, of the profusion of Mo-rich NixMo metastable compounds that these alloys contain to their excellent mechanical properties. One of the alloys containing metastable NixMo precipitates is RSR 197 of composition Ni-8.96Mo-15.06A1-1.98Ta-.015Yt. The alloy was prepared at Pratt and Whitney Government Products Division, West Palm Beach, Florida, from rapidly solidified powder. The powder was canned under inert conditions and extruded as rod at 1315°C. The as-extruded rod, after air cooling, was solution treated at 1315°C for two hours, air cooled, and heat treated for one hour at 815°C, followed again by air cooling.

Mg alloys with fine mechanical properties and high damping capacities are essential in engineering applications. In this work, Mg–Zn–Y based alloys with lamellar long period stacking ordered (LPSO) phases were obtained by different processes. The results show that a more lamellar second phase can be obtained in the samples with more solid solution atoms. The density of the lamellar LPSO phase has an obvious effect on the damping of the magnesium alloy. The compact LPSO phase is not conducive to dislocation damping, but sparse lamellar phases can improve the damping capacity without significantly reducing the mechanical properties. The Mg95.3Zn2Y2.7 alloy with lamellar LPSO phases and ~100 μm grain size exhibited a fine damping property of 0.110 at ε = 10–3.

This study evaluated the microstructure, grain size, and mechanical properties of the alloy 800H rotary friction welds in as-welded and post-weld heat-treated conditions. The standards for the alloy 800H not only specify the composition and mechanical properties but also the minimum grain sizes. This is because these alloys are mostly used in creep resisting applications. The dynamic recrystallization of the highly strained and plasticized material during friction welding resulted in the fine grain structure (20 ± 2 µm) in the weld zone. However, a small increase in grain size was observed in the heat-affected zone of the weldment with a slight decrease in hardness compared to the base metal. Post-weld solution heat treatment (PWHT) of the friction weld joints increased the grain size (42 ± 4 µm) in the weld zone. Both as-welded and post-weld solution heat-treated friction weld joints failed in the heat-affected zone during the room temperature tensile testing and showed a lower yield strength and ultimate tensile strength than the base metal. A fracture analysis of the failed tensile samples revealed ductile fracture features. However, in high-temperature tensile testing, post-weld solution heat-treated joints exhibited superior elongation and strength compared to the as-welded joints due to the increase in the grain size of the weld metal. It was demonstrated in this study that the minimum grain size requirement of the alloy 800H friction weld joints could be successfully met by PWHT with improved strength and elongation, especially at high temperatures.
