Purpose The purpose of this work is to survey the body of research revolving around big data (BD) and analytics in hospitality and tourism, by detecting macro topical areas, research streams and gaps and to develop an agenda for future research. Design/methodology/approach This research is based on a systematic literature review of academic papers indexed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases published up to 31 December 2020. The outputs were analyzed using bibliometric techniques, network analysis and topic modeling. Findings The number of scientific outputs in research with hospitality and tourism settings has been expanding over the period 2015–2020, with a substantial stability of the areas examined. The vast majority are published in academic journals where the main reference area is neither hospitality nor tourism. The body of research is rather fragmented and studies on relevant aspects, such as BD analytics capabilities, are virtually missing. Most of the outputs are empirical. Moreover, many of the articles collected relatively small quantities of records and, regardless of the time period considered, only a handful of articles mix a number of different techniques. Originality/value This work sheds new light on the emergence of a body of research at the intersection of hospitality and tourism management and data science. It enriches and complements extant literature reviews on BD and analytics, combining these two interconnected topics.

This study puts forward the results of a comprehensive literature review that allows of the exploration of the big data phenomenon as in technical terms as well in socio-political and philosophical ones, through the reading of authors such as Rob Kitchin (2014), Dawn E. Holmes (2017), and so forth. It is here offered a new critical approach to Big Data as long as the analysis have permitted us to evaluate not only the components of this new data science, but also the onto-epistemological consequences derived from the development and implementation of Big Data as in the scientific field as well in the quotidian. Also, this paper permits us to understand the linkage between Big Data and set theory in the construction of an onto-epistemology related to a political conservatism so that we are able to have the complete panorama in order to elaborate, in the near future, strategies to sublate such a phenomenon.

As a first step of pursuing the vision of “Big Data science in nursing,” we described the characteristics of nursing research data reported in 194 published nursing studies. We also explored how completely the Version 1 metadata specification of biomedical and healthCAre Data Discovery Index Ecosystem (bioCADDIE) represents these metadata. The metadata items of the nursing studies were all related to one or more of the bioCADDIE metadata entities. However, values of many metadata items of the nursing studies were not sufficiently represented through the bioCADDIE metadata. This was partly due to the differences in the scope of the content that the bioCADDIE metadata are designed to represent. The 194 nursing studies reported a total of 1,181 unique data items, the majority of which take non-numeric values. This indicates the importance of data standardization to enable the integrative analyses of these data to support Big Data science in nursing.

PurposeThis paper aims to examine the extent to which Business Intelligence and Big Data feature within academic research in hospitality and tourism published until 2016, by identifying research gaps and future developments and designing an agenda for future research.Design/methodology/approachThe study consists of a systematic quantitative literature review of academic articles indexed on the Scopus and Web of Science databases. The articles were reviewed based on the following features: research topic; conceptual and theoretical characterization; sources of data; type of data and size; data collection methods; data analysis techniques; and data reporting and visualization.FindingsFindings indicate an increase in hospitality and tourism management literature applying analytical techniques to large quantities of data. However, this research field is fairly fragmented in scope and limited in methodologies and displays several gaps. A conceptual framework that helps to identify critical business problems and links the domains of business intelligence and big data to tourism and hospitality management and development is missing. Moreover, epistemological dilemmas and consequences for theory development of big data-driven knowledge are still a terra incognita. Last, despite calls for more integration of management and data science, cross-disciplinary collaborations with computer and data scientists are rather episodic and related to specific types of work and research.Research limitations/implicationsThis work is based on academic articles published before 2017; hence, scientific outputs published after the moment of writing have not been included. A rich research agenda is designed.Originality/valueThis study contributes to explore in depth and systematically to what extent hospitality and tourism scholars are aware of and working intendedly on business intelligence and big data. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, it is the first systematic literature review within hospitality and tourism research dealing with business intelligence and big data.

There are various type of threats, attacks such as leakage of data, the third party tries to access, viruses and vulnerability that stand against the security of the big data. This paper will discuss about the security threats and their approximate method in the field of biomedical research, cyber security and cloud computing.

BACKGROUND This paper presents a systematic literature review of existing remote health monitoring systems with special reference to neonatal intensive care (NICU). Articles on NICU clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) which used cloud computing and big data analytics were surveyed. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to review technologies used to provide NICU CDSS. The literature review highlights the gaps within frameworks providing HAaaS paradigm for big data analytics METHODS Literature searches were performed in Google Scholar, IEEE Digital Library, JMIR Medical Informatics, JMIR Human Factors and JMIR mHealth and only English articles published on and after 2015 were included. The overall search strategy was to retrieve articles that included terms that were related to “health analytics” and “as a service” or “internet of things” / ”IoT” and “neonatal intensive care unit” / ”NICU”. Title and abstracts were reviewed to assess relevance. RESULTS In total, 17 full papers met all criteria and were selected for full review. Results showed that in most cases bedside medical devices like pulse oximeters have been used as the sensor device. Results revealed a great diversity in data acquisition techniques used however in most cases the same physiological data (heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation) was acquired. Results obtained have shown that in most cases data analytics involved data mining classification techniques, fuzzy logic-NICU decision support systems (DSS) etc where as big data analytics involving Artemis cloud data analysis have used CRISP-TDM and STDM temporal data mining technique to support clinical research studies. In most scenarios both real-time and retrospective analytics have been performed. Results reveal that most of the research study has been performed within small and medium sized urban hospitals so there is wide scope for research within rural and remote hospitals with NICU set ups. Results have shown creating a HAaaS approach where data acquisition and data analytics are not tightly coupled remains an open research area. Reviewed articles have described architecture and base technologies for neonatal health monitoring with an IoT approach. CONCLUSIONS The current work supports implementation of the expanded Artemis cloud as a commercial offering to healthcare facilities in Canada and worldwide to provide cloud computing services to critical care. However, no work till date has been completed for low resource setting environment within healthcare facilities in India which results in scope for research. It is observed that all the big data analytics frameworks which have been reviewed in this study have tight coupling of components within the framework, so there is a need for a framework with functional decoupling of components.

BACKGROUND The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) remains a serious global pandemic. Currently, all age groups are at risk for infection but the elderly and persons with underlying health conditions are at higher risk of severe complications. In the United States (US), the pandemic curve is rapidly changing with over 6,786,352 cases and 199,024 deaths reported. South Carolina (SC) as of 9/21/2020 reported 138,624 cases and 3,212 deaths across the state. OBJECTIVE The growing availability of COVID-19 data provides a basis for deploying Big Data science to leverage multitudinal and multimodal data sources for incremental learning. Doing this requires the acquisition and collation of multiple data sources at the individual and county level. METHODS The population for the comprehensive database comes from statewide COVID-19 testing surveillance data (March 2020- till present) for all SC COVID-19 patients (N≈140,000). This project will 1) connect multiple partner data sources for prediction and intelligence gathering, 2) build a REDCap database that links de-identified multitudinal and multimodal data sources useful for machine learning and deep learning algorithms to enable further studies. Additional data will include hospital based COVID-19 patient registries, Health Sciences South Carolina (HSSC) data, data from the office of Revenue and Fiscal Affairs (RFA), and Area Health Resource Files (AHRF). RESULTS The project was funded as of June 2020 by the National Institutes for Health. CONCLUSIONS The development of such a linked and integrated database will allow for the identification of important predictors of short- and long-term clinical outcomes for SC COVID-19 patients using data science.

Introdução: A atual configuração da dinâmica relativa à produção e àcomunicação científicas revela o protagonismo da Ciência Orientada a Dados,em concepção abrangente, representada principalmente por termos como “e-Science” e “Data Science”. Objetivos: Apresentar a produção científica mundial relativa à Ciência Orientada a Dados a partir dos termos “e-Science” e “Data Science” na Scopus e na Web of Science, entre 2006 e 2016. Metodologia: A pesquisa está estruturada em cinco etapas: a) busca de informações nas bases Scopus e Web of Science; b) obtenção dos registros; bibliométricos; c) complementação das palavras-chave; d) correção e cruzamento dos dados; e) representação analítica dos dados. Resultados: Os termos de maior destaque na produção científica analisada foram Distributed computer systems (2006), Grid computing (2007 a 2013) e Big data (2014 a 2016). Na área de Biblioteconomia e Ciência de Informação, a ênfase é dada aos temas: Digital library e Open access, evidenciando a centralidade do campo nas discussões sobre dispositivos para dar acesso à informação científica em meio digital. Conclusões: Sob um olhar diacrônico, constata-se uma visível mudança de foco das temáticas voltadas às operações de compartilhamento de dados para a perspectiva analítica de busca de padrões em grandes volumes de dados.Palavras-chave: Data Science. <p>During past few years, data is growing exponentially attracting researchers to work a popular term, the Big Data. Big Data is observed in various fields, such as information technology, telecommunication, theoretical computing, mathematics, data mining and data warehousing. Data science is frequently referred with Big Data as it uses methods to scale down the Big Data. Currently<br />more than 3.2 billion of the world population is connected to internet out of which 46% are connected via smart phones. Over 5.5 billion people are using cell phones. As technology is rapidly shifting from ordinary cell phones towards smart phones, therefore proportion of using internet is also growing. There<br />is a forecast that by 2020 around 7 billion people at the globe will be using internet out of which 52% will be using their smart phones to connect. In year 2050 that figure will be touching 95% of world population. Every device connect to internet generates data. As majority of the devices are using smart phones to<br />generate this data by using applications such as Instagram, WhatsApp, Apple, Google, Google+, Twitter, Flickr etc., therefore this huge amount of data is becoming a big threat for telecom sector. This paper is giving a comparison of amount of Big Data generated by telecom industry. Based on the collected data<br />we use forecasting tools to predict the amount of Big Data will be generated in future and also identify threats that telecom industry will be facing from that huge amount of Big Data.</p>

Abstract The usage and exchange of “big data” is at the forefront of the data science agenda where Record Linkage plays a prominent role in biomedical research. In an era of ubiquitous data exchange and big data, Record Linkage is almost inevitable, but raises ethical and legal problems, namely personal data and privacy protection. Record Linkage refers to the general merging of data information to consolidate facts about an individual or an event that are not available in a separate record. This article provides an overview of ethical challenges and research opportunities in linking routine data on health and education with cohort data from very preterm (VPT) infants in Portugal. Portuguese, European and International law has been reviewed on data processing, protection and privacy. A three-stage analysis was carried out: i) interplay of threefold law-levelling for Record Linkage at different levels; ii) impact of data protection and privacy rights for data processing, iii) data linkage process' challenges and opportunities for research. A framework to discuss the process and its implications for data protection and privacy was created. The GDPR functions as utmost substantial legal basis for the protection of personal data in Record Linkage, and explicit written consent is considered the appropriate basis for the processing sensitive data. In Portugal, retrospective access to routine data is permitted if anonymised; for health data if it meets data processing requirements declared with an explicit consent; for education data if the data processing rules are complied. Routine health and education data can be linked to cohort data if rights of the data subject and requirements and duties of processors and controllers are respected. A strong ethical context through the application of the GDPR in all phases of research need to be established to achieve Record Linkage between cohort and routine collected records for health and education data of VPT infants in Portugal. Key messages GDPR is the most important legal framework for the protection of personal data, however, its uniform approach granting freedom to its Member states hampers Record Linkage processes among EU countries. The question remains whether the gap between data protection and privacy is adequately balanced at three legal levels to guarantee freedom for research and the improvement of health of data subjects.
