Alkaline pretreatment has been known as the most popular method to process lignocellulosic materials for bioethanol production due to its simplicity and high efficiency. However, the waste water of the process has a very high basicity, which requires neutralization with acids upon further disposal. In this study, rubber wood saw dust (Hevea brasiliensis) was employed as lignocellulosic material and its pretreatment was inspected with both diluted H2SO4 and NaOH in different combination ways. Hereby, acid was used not only for waste water neutralization but also to contribute to lignin removal. Analysis results showed that an aqueous solution of 2.0 - 2.5 wt.% H2SO4 can be used to treat the biomass followed by alkaline pretreatment. By this so-called combo-pretreatment technique, cellulose was well preserved without significant hydrolysis while the final pretreatment efficiency was up to 63.0%, compared to 48.2% of using only the alkaline solution and 13.7% of using only the acidic solution. Finally, alkaline waste water can be mixed to be neutralized with acidic waste water from the two previous steps. This innovated technique improved the pretreatment efficiency almost without increasing in chemical cost.

Photocatalytic technology is widely used in water purification because of its environmental protection, high efficiency and energy saving. Therefore, it is extremely important for the selection and preparation of specific semiconductor materials used in the field of photocatalysis. In this work, 1T@2H MoS2 nanosheets were fabricated by simple hydrothermal method, and the photocatalytic property of as-prepared 1T@2H MoS2 were investigated by the photo-degradation of methylene blue (MB) water solutions under visible light irradiation via 2H MoS2.The results indicated that compared to 2H MoS2, the 1T@2H MoS2 exhibited more excellent photocatalytic degradation property. After 150 minutes of irradiation under visible light, 1T@2H MoS2 had a removal rate of 98% for MB, and 2H MoS2 eventually reached 19%. The enhancement photocatalytic property of 1T@2H MoS2 could be attributed to the reduced band gap energy of the hybrid-nanosheets and the increased in electron migration speed.

The main goals for the design of waste water treatment plants are high efficiency, high operational reliability and minimal costs. The challenge to have very low investment costs especially exists for industrial plants which are only in operation for several months every year as e.g. in the beet sugar industry in Central Europe. A case study of an Austrian sugar factory treatment plant shows that using very simple and low-cost structures does not affect the efficiency of the treatment. This factory is also one of the rare cases where biologically treated effluent is recirculated to reduce fresh water consumption. Special emphasis is put on the start-up process, the influence of shock loadings in the influent, and design and operation of the plant.

The development of new water pollution control technology, particularly the development of high efficiency and low cost adsorbents is imperative. A compound adsorbent was prepared with the combination of chitosan and bentonite. Bentonite was added in chitosan slurry of 95% the degree of deacetylation to prepare adsorbent which mass ratio is 1:5. Its absorptivity toward Cu2+was studied. The results show: the dosage of the adsorbent is 14 g/L,the mass concentration of Cu2+in wastewater does not exceed 180 mg/L,the pH value range from 6 to7,the adsorption equilibrium time is about 9 h and Cu2+removal efficiency is over 97%.The low cost of adsorbents can be used to control industrial waste water containing copper.
