This study examines students’ perceptions of an open pedagogy experiment in which they created their own textbook for an undergraduate public health course. The lead author’s primary motivation for developing this assignment was the high cost associated with the traditional textbooks that were otherwise needed to cover the breadth of subject matter in the course. The resulting open textbook included 19 chapters, covering all the required components of the course, and the final version was published in a statewide open educational resource repository. Students provided feedback about this undertaking by way of an end-of-term survey. The results showed high percentages of students who associated the textbook creation project with greater engagement and satisfaction than the passive use of traditional textbooks. Students also reported their perception of a learning benefit related to the creation of course content. Pedagogical implications of this study are discussed, and future research questions are proposed.

In this study, we explored the relationship between extracurricular (formal and informal) music activity participation and music and Chinese language academic achievements of primary school students in China. Fourth graders ( N = 10,958) reported their demographic information and extracurricular music activity participation, and completed two standardized academic achievement tests, one on music and another on the Chinese language. Results showed that students’ music activity participation was related to higher music academic achievement after controlling for gender, school location, and family socioeconomic status. The effect of students’ informal music activity participation on their music academic achievements was greater than that of students’ formal music activity participation. Remarkably, students’ informal music activity participation was also positively related to their Chinese language academic achievement, while formal music activity participation showed a negative correlation with academic achievement in Chinese language. Findings contributed to an increased understanding of the influence of different kinds of extracurricular music activities on students’ academic developments.

The flipped classroom instructional model has emerged as an alternative to conventional lecture-based teaching that has dominated higher education for decades. In 2013, a cohort of graduate-level public health students participated in a flipped environmental and occupational health course. We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of this course. Using data collected from a post-course survey, focus group sessions, and classroom observation, we examine student perceptions of the flipped classroom instructional model and synthesize lessons learned from flipping the classroom more broadly. Post-course survey data indicate that students had generally positive perceptions towards the flipped classroom instructional model. Four major themes emerged from the focus group data in relation to perceptions of the flipped classroom: knowledge application, content delivery, innovation, and connecting the online and in-class components. These results are promising and suggest that this approach warrants further consideration and research. Le modèle pédagogique de la classe inversée a émergé comme solution de rechange à l’enseignement traditionnel par cours magistraux qui a dominé l’éducation supérieure pendant des décennies. En 2013, une cohorte d’étudiants en santé publique aux cycles supérieurs a participé à un cours inversé sur la santé environnementale et professionnelle. Nous présentons la conception, la mise en œuvre et l’évaluation de ce cours. À l’aide de données recueillies par l’entremise d’un sondage après le cours, lors de séances de discussion en groupe et d’observation en classe, nous examinons les perceptions qu’ont les étudiants du modèle pédagogique de la classe inversée et résumons les leçons tirées qui sont pertinentes pour les cours inversés en général. Les données du sondage réalisé après le cours indiquent que les étudiants avaient des perceptions pour la plupart positives du modèle pédagogique de la classe inversée. Quatre thèmes principaux ont émergé des données du groupe de discussion relativement aux perceptions sur la classe inversée : mise en application des connaissances, diffusion du contenu, innovation et lien entre les composantes en ligne et en classe. Ces résultats sont prometteurs et suggèrent que cette approche devrait faire l’objet de plus de considération et de recherche.

In this era of globalization and demonetization, people of India have become aware of academic excellence and over all development of the students. Education psychologists have brought such issues in the limelight and provided valuable findings contributing to well being of the students. The present paper is an attempt to find out and compare certain areas of adjustment and academic achievement of school students. The sample consisted of 90 students with the age range from 14 to 17 years. Bell Adjustment Inventory developed and standardized by Mohsin and Shamshad (1968) was used to find out adjustment level of students. “t” test was used to analyze the data. Average marks of last three years annual results were considered as academic achievements. The findings showed that boys and girls students differed significantly in overall adjustment process. Although, there were no significant differences among the different level of adjustments i.e. home, health, social and emotional. The results further revealed that high achievement and low achievement students differed significantly in overall adjustment and high academic achievement groups are more adjusted as compare to low academic achievement groups.

United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals 4 Quality Education has highlighted major challenges for all nations to ensure inclusive and equitable quality access to education, facilities for children, and young adults. The SDG4 is even more important for developing nations as receiving proper education or vocational training, especially in science and technology, means a foundational step in improving other aspects of their citizens’ lives. However, the extant scientific literature about STEM education still lacks focus on developing countries, even more so in the rural area. Using a dataset of 4967 observations of junior high school students from a rural area in a transition economy, the article employs the Bayesian approach to identify the interaction between gender, socioeconomic status, and students’ STEM academic achievements. The results report gender has little association with STEM academic achievements; however, female students (αa_Sex[2] = 2.83) appear to have achieved better results than their male counterparts (αa_Sex[1] = 2.68). Families with better economic status, parents with a high level of education (βb(EduMot) = 0.07), or non-manual jobs (αa_SexPJ[4] = 3.25) are found to be correlated with better study results. On the contrary, students with zero (βb(OnlyChi) = -0.14) or more than two siblings (βb(NumberofChi) = -0.01) are correlated with lower study results compared to those with only one sibling. These results imply the importance of providing women with opportunities for better education. Policymakers should also consider maintaining family size so the parents can provide their resources to each child equally.

Abstract. The English Course in Public Health Faculty of Diponegoro University is expected to develop the reading skills of the students through various exercises. However, its main goal is to help students identify simple, complex and compound sentences and how to organize them into good paragraphs. As in the Faculty of Public Health, the English Course is only given once in the first Semester, the exercises in each of the lesson is very compact which consists of Reading Text, Comprehension Questions, Word Study, Grammar and Usage, and Writing, in short these are called integrated exercised. Some students did very well on the exercises while others did not. The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between the students’ performance in integrated exercises and their academic achievements of Diponegoro University Students majoring in Public Health who took English Course. The academic achievements in this study refer to their Mid-Term test Scores. Method of the Study: in the study of Diponegoro University Freshmen majoring in Public Health, a descriptive qualitative method was used to determine whether or not there is a correlation between reading and writing exercises and their academic achievements. The instruments used are the scores of 3 taken from exercises in unit 1, 2 and 3 and 1 Mid-Term test. The population of this research is 73 Public Health students of Diponegoro University taking English 1 Course. The data analysis result shows that Sig score is 0,000 < 0,05 therefore Ho is declined and Ha is accepted, which means there is a correlation between reading and writing practices scores and mid test scores 0.403 which is positive. Therefore, it can be concluded that the higher their writing scores are, the higher mid test scores will be.Key words: correlation, English course, integrated exercises, mid-term testAbstrak.  Mata kuliah Bahasa Inggris di Fakultas Kesehatan Masyarakat diharapkan mampu mengembangkan ketrampilan membaca mahasiswa memalui berbagai Latihan soal-soal. Namun, tujuan utama dari mata kuliah ini adalah membantu para mahasiswa menindentifikasi kalimat – kalimat sederhana, kompleks dan majemuk serta bagaimana membentuk kalimat – kalimat tersebut dalam bentuk paragraph. Karena mata kuliah Bahasa Inggris hanya disajikan satu kali, maka latihan-latihan soal pada setiap unit dibuat sangat padat yang terdiri dari Teks Bacaan, Pertanyaan tentang bacaan, Kosakata, Grammar dan fungsinya, serta Latihan writing. Ada mahasiswa yang bisa mengerjakan Latihan soal dengan sangat baik tetapi ada juga yang kesulitan. Tujuan dari peneltian ini adalah untuk melihat korelasi antara Nilai dari Latihan soal reading dan writing serta prestasi akademik dari Mahasiwa baru Universitas Diponegoro jurusan Kesehatan Masyarakat. Prestasi akademik dalam hal ini adalah nilai Mid-term test mereka. Dalam penelitian pada mahasiswa baru Universitas Diponegoro jurusan Kesehatan Masyarakat, digunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif untuk menetukan apakah ada atau tidak ada korelasi antara Latihan soal reading dan writing dengan prestasi akademik mereka. Instrumen yang digunakan pada penelitian ini  adalah 3 nilai yang diambil dari 3 latihan soal Unit 1, 2 dan 3. Jumlah populasi adalah 73 Mahasiswa Kesehatan Masyarakat Universitas Diponegoro yang mengambil mata kuliah Bahasa Inggris 1. Hasil dari data analisis menunjukkan bahwa nilai Sig  0,000 < 0,05  sehingga Ho ditolak dan Ha diterima, yang berarti ada korelasi antara nilai Latihan writing dengan nilai ujian tengah semester 0.403 positif. Sehingga bisa disimpulkan bahwa semakin tinggi nilai mereka pada Latihan writing akan semakin tinggi juga nilai mereka dalam Ujian Tengah Semester.Kata kunci: korelasi, mata kuliah bahasa Inggris, nilai latihan soal terpadu, nilai Ujian Tengah Semester

Abstract Problem For two decades, France has taken part in two “competing” school-based, cross-national surveys exploring the health behaviors and well-being of adolescent (Health Behavior in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey, 11-13-15 year-olds) and their substance use (European School Project on Alcohol and other Drugs (ESPAD), 15-16 year-olds). Description of problem Since 2010, French data is provided at national level by grade rather than age. This allowed providing a continuous observation of health behaviors among adolescents, looking at the temporal spread of substance use and providing a better understanding of the role of school as a setting for adolescents’ health. But the difficulty of participating every 4 years in two big surveys remained. Effects of changes In 2018, France decided to conduct the 2 surveys in a unified and simultaneous way across middle- and high-school. This project is called ’National Survey in Middle- and High-school for Adolescents on Health and Substances’, EnCLASS, explicit acronym easy to pronounce and remember in French. If the main objective of “merging” these surveys is to improve the monitoring of health behaviours and substance use throughout adolescence, it also allows a significant gain regarding preparation, coordination and organization of the fieldwork, hence of overall costs, while ensuring perfect comparability of data at international level. Evolution of data visualization on substance use will be used to illustrate the challenges and improvements of such a process, based on data collected in 2018 among more than 20,000 representative secondary-school students. Lessons In addition to a greater facility of interpreting and reading findings, presenting data throughout secondary school grades improves its impact and use in a public health perspective and allowing identifying operational targets for prevention and health promotion in schools, as classes are their main settings. Key messages EnCLASS is unique in Europe, it ensures an excellent comparability of data at international level while providing an innovative national monitoring of adolescent health behavior, including drug use. Further, by its improved quality, perspective and relevance, EnCLASS can contribute to Public health policies analysis regarding school-students in France in a less expensive and better way.

Research has shown that service-learning can increase student-learning outcomes across various disciplines. Service-learning opportunities have been steadily increasing in college settings, especially in health-related fields. This evaluation of an undergraduate public health course at a mid-size, public university in New England sought to understand the impact of service-learning on material retention, internships, and post-graduation public health careers. A 25-item questionnaire was emailed to students who took the course between the Fall 2010 and Spring 2016 semesters with 75 completed (33.3% completion rate). More than half of the respondents noted that their participation in a service-learning project positively affected their internship experience, their first post-graduation job, and their overall career, while also helping them retain the course material after graduation. Open-ended responses provided insight to the qualitative responses. Respondents noted that in addition to having the understanding and ability to put on programs in their community, they also had more confidence in their abilities. The opportunity to practice public speaking skills as well as work collaboratively in group settings, were both noted as essential skills needed to succeed in the public health workforce. It was concluded the project had a positive impact on student’s learning and retention in planning, implementing, and evaluating an actual health promotion program as well as how they were able to use those skills in their careers.
