Urban development consumes resources and therefore abolishes the ecological function of the natural environment. It generates the dilemma between urban development and environmental protection. Urban development cannot be halted for many reasons due to its importance to accommodate population growth, urbanization and economic development. Determinations to negotiate the dilemma between environmental protection and urban development have been undergoing for many years. One of the efforts is mesoscale ecological friendly technology concept where the function of natural environment could be maintained while letting progressive urban development to flourish. The study was conducted in secondary city in Peninsular Malaysia of Johor Bahru. The study was conducted by analysing secondary information obtained from relevant resources, by undertaking internet research on the applications of ecological friendly technology towards sustainability in developed and developing countries, and by observing the connection between urban development and environmental state. The findings show that by employing applied ecological friendly technology, the urban physical development can still be undergoing without substantial environmental impacts.

Today one of the important concerns of cities is growth by sustainable development. However sustainable urban development has been used in various forms and explained by various definitions, this subject is accompanied by uncertainty. New approaches in urban planning have attempted to achieve sustainable development. One of these is City Development Strategies (CDS), a new strategic planning approach that has been employed in more than 200 cities worldwide to achieve sustainable growth. However, CDS achieve different levels of success in sustainability. This paper takes the initiative to investigate the contribution of CDS toward sustainable urban development by looking for inclusion of principle of sustainable urban development in CDS themes. However CDS themes are various such as sustainable urban development definitions, therefore this inclusion is different. This paper highlights this relationship and inclusion for one the latest definition of CDS presented by Cities Alliance in 2006. This definition can succeed to achieve sustainability on some aspects, especially environmental and economic sustainability and fail to achieve some ones. This output is discussed in relation to CDS themes that have been applied in developing countries.

Developing countries have still shortage of housing due to natural disasters. Houses get destroyed wholly or partly and it causes the increase of lack of housing stock of a country. In disaster management cycle, rehabilitation or reconstruction is an important issue to protect, reduce or mitigate the effect of disasters. For sustainable urban development, disaster consideration is as important as it helps to maintain the development growth rate and tries to make sure that the settlements are in a stable way. The paper describes the natural disasters and issues related to proper disaster housing for sustainable urban development on the basis of literature.

To efficiently manage growth and changes arising from rapidly increasing population and urbanization trends, developing countries need to employ appropriate tools to analyze the key issues involved. Globally, crowdsourcing is increasingly being applied to facilitate sustainable urban development (SUD) planning process. Crowdsourcing has already proved capable of generating new models for urban planning and governance that source and mobilize diverse social actors working toward sustainable and innovation-oriented urban space. However, few studies have explored crowdsourcing applications in SUD planning in developing countries. Therefore, based on desktop study, this chapter examines applications of crowdsourcing in SUD planning in developing countries. The chapter reviews the conceptual and historical foundation of crowdsourcing, and highlights some exemplary applications of crowdsourcing in SUD planning worldwide. It then discusses the challenges and potentials of crowdsourcing as a tool in planning for SUD in developing countries and concludes with future research directions.

Planners can apply a relatively simple and user-friendly tool to control the expansion of urban areas in developing countries. This tool, presented here, is based on a traditional accessibility index, which may be taken as a measure of urban development. The entire process of construction and analysis of the networks based on the accessibility index was carried out using a geographic information system for transportation (GIS-T). The tool has been tested in São Carlos, a medium-sized Brazilian city, in which the effects of some proposed real estate developments on the accessibility patterns have been studied. The results of this application show that the tool is suitable for selecting the best site for a new development among many alternatives, promoting more efficient use of the urban area.
