AbstractAnimals exhibit innate defense behaviors in response to approaching threats cued by the dynamics of sensory inputs of various modalities. The underlying neural circuits have been mostly studied in the visual system, but remain unclear for other modalities. Here, by utilizing sounds with increasing (vs. decreasing) loudness to mimic looming (vs. receding) objects, we find that looming sounds elicit stereotypical sequential defensive reactions: freezing followed by flight. Both behaviors require the activity of auditory cortex, in particular the sustained type of responses, but are differentially mediated by corticostriatal projections primarily innervating D2 neurons in the tail of the striatum and corticocollicular projections to the superior colliculus, respectively. The behavioral transition from freezing to flight can be attributed to the differential temporal dynamics of the striatal and collicular neurons in their responses to looming sound stimuli. Our results reveal an essential role of the striatum in the innate defense control.

This study aims to grasp the policy of state defense which embedded through the form of school culture which plays an important role to shape the character of state defense in Katolik Karya, Toboali Elementary School, Bangka Belitung. This also seeks to capture how state defense culture is effectivelly implemented to support the students’ character. This study uses descriptive qualitative, in which data and information are obtained through interviews, questionnaires, and documents involving principals, teachers, education staff, and students. This study found that the school already has developed policy to instill a state defense culture which is introduced by the Tunas Karya Foundation. The state defense policy is developed through a set of values which are arranged in the ten main character as a genuine of cultural product to form of student character. Schools conduct a state defense policy through habituation with a nurturing and modeling approach by teachers. This study also shows that the habituation of the ten main character values in making state defense behavior is quite effective. Based on the assessment results, the data shows that the majority of students have regularly employed the habituation of the state defense with average marks at 82 point.

Ten individuals with antidepressant-resistant bulimia were treated with the long-acting opiate antagonist naltrexone. Seven of the ten experienced at least a 75 percent reduction of their bulimic symptoms, and have maintained their improvment on three to five month follow-up. These preliminary data suggest that naltrexone may be of use in bulimia unresponsive to standard antidepressant therapy, and may provide insight into the role of endogenous opioids in the etiology of eating disorders.

ABSTRACT Understanding the physiological defense behavior of plants subjected to herbicide application may help to identify products with higher or lower capacity to cause oxidative stress in crops. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of herbicides in the antioxidant activity of rice plants. The experimental design was completely randomized, with six replications. Treatments consisted of the herbicides bentazon (photosystem II inhibitor; 960 g ha-1), penoxsulam (acetolactate synthase inhibitor; 60 g ha-1), cyhalofop-butyl (acetyl coenzyme-A carboxylase inhibitor; 315 g ha-1) and a control. After the herbicides application, samples of rice shoots were collected at 12, 24, 48 and 96 hours after application (HAA). The components evaluated were hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), lipid peroxidation and activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). Bentazon (up to 24 HAA) and penoxsulam (48 and 96 HAA) reduced the CAT activity. Moreover, these herbicides increased the levels of H2O2, lipid peroxidation and SOD activity, indicating a condition of oxidative stress in rice plants. The cyhalofop-butyl herbicide did not alter the antioxidant activity, showing that it causes less stress to the crop.

Mobile target defense (MTD) is a research hotspot in the field of network security. The decision method of network defense based on game theory is an important technique to guide MTD to make the optimal defense behavior in different network environments (GT-MTD). A lot of related work has been put forward in this field. In this paper, we focus on the scope and field of GT-MTD, systematically introduce the application scenarios of MTD in combination with four different game theory models of classical games (static games, signal games), Markov games, differential games or evolutionary games, and put forward the future development direction. There are some new views and explanations on the research of GT-MTD.
