The South African workplace is confronted with many leadership challenges, specifically those relating to the employment relationship between subordinates and their supervisors. A high-quality relationship is essential, considering the work-family spillovers employees experience. Limited research has been conducted on the potential positive and negative consequences of the leader-member exchange (LMX) dyadic relationship. In this study, we used a cross-sectional research design, and drew an employee sample (N = 120) from a commuter transport engineering company. A five-point Likert scale was employed and statistical analyses were carried out using the SAS statistical program. We calculated Pearson correlation coefficients and used structural equation modelling to test the proposed conceptual model to indicate possible correlations between the different variables. The main finding of the study was that the nature of the LMX relationship quality in the relevant company appeared to be high and positively related to work-home enrichment but negatively related to work-home conflict and role overload. The article concludes by making a number of suggestions to respond to challenges.

BackgroundContinuity of care is a fading type of care because GPs are working more flexibly and at reduced working hours. The GP Contract gave a financial incentive to provide prompt GP appointments, but to the detriment of continuity of care. Increased patient demand for appointments has seemingly led to patients favouring ‘any’ appointment with a GP rather than ‘an appointment with the same GP’. Continuity of care in general practice is associated with greater patient satisfaction and is the preferred type of care for patients with chronic disease or psychological problems. In the Northeast of England there is a multi-partner GP practice that operates a true personalised list system. Other GP practices in the area do offer a degree of continuity of care, but this has not been measured.AimTo measure and compare the relational continuity of care index of four matched GP practices, one of which operates a personalised list.MethodA written protocol enabled the authors to extract comparable anonymised data from four GP practices over a year (January to December 2019). Two standardised indexes of continuity of care (UPC and SLICC) were calculated and compared.ResultsContinuity of care was consistently higher with personalised lists. UPC index results show that all GP practices provide surprisingly high continuity of care, albeit not with patients’ assigned GPs. Higher monthly UPC scores versus overall scores indicate patients are receiving continuity of care in relation to their condition.ConclusionContinuity of care is still observed in GP practices that do not have personalised lists.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify and prioritise social responsible mechanisms in apparel supply chains to extend social responsibility from large retailers in developed countries to producers in developing nations. Design/methodology/approach A framework that consists of supplier qualification and supplier relational mechanisms as two socially responsible mechanisms, with five factors and 18 dimensions is proposed. To prioritise the dimensions, analytic hierarchy process is employed by using a case study methodology of a major Australian retailer sourcing from Bangladesh manufacturers. Findings Results indicate that at the mechanism level, both retailer and manufacturers perceive qualification of manufacturer as by far the most critical element compared to the relational mechanism. However, substantial differences exist at the factor level; namely, that the social factor is critical for the retailer, whereas the economic factor is critical for the manufacturer. Within the relational mechanism, evaluation helps retailers to enforce social responsibility, while manufacturers believe collaboration helps. Research limitations/implications The major limitation of this study is the generalisation of the findings. The results obtained by focusing on a particular context in the Australian retail sector importing from Bangladesh, may not be applicable to other nations. Practical implications By highlighting the difference of opinion, this study assists managers in developing guidelines to better understand the socially responsible mechanisms in the retailer-manufacturer dyadic relationship and to propose strategies to address the differences. Originality/value This study advances the literature on inter-organisational relationship to retailer-manufacturer dyad for the implementation of social responsibility by including supplier qualification along with supplier relational mechanism.

The aim of this study was to explore father’s involvement in rearing a child with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD). In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven fathers in Japan, and the data were analyzed using a qualitative inductive method. The relationship between the parents, in the context of childrearing, influenced father’s involvement with their child with PIMD. Fathers improved their self-confidence in childrearing by discussing and sharing about their child’s conditions and caregiving approaches with their spouse. Moreover, fathers’ experience of being acknowledged and entrusted by their spouse with childrearing motivated and enhanced their involvement. On the contrary, fathers struggled with concerns regarding their family’s future, the balance between childrearing and work, and their own health status. The current findings contribute to nurses’ understanding of father’s involvement in childrearing a child with PIMD and the development of support focusing on the parental dyadic relationship and coparenting behavior.

ABSTRACTManagerial networking with political actors has long been recognized as a crucial co-option strategy to navigate the challenging institutional environment in emerging economies. However, we know much less about what drives the variation of political networking investment by private ventures. Drawing on resource dependence theory, we unpack the dyadic business-government relations and identify the key organizational and environmental factors that shape the power dependence relationships between private ventures and the government. By examining power imbalance and mutual dependence in this dyadic relationship and considering both the necessity and the capability of political networking, we develop hypotheses regarding the ways in which size-, connection-, and location-based dependencies affect firms’ political networking intensity. These hypotheses are tested through a unique survey of Chinese private ventures. Our study finds that political networking intensity (1) has an inverted U-shaped relationship with firm size, (2) is negatively associated with the presence of embedded political ties while positively associated with that of achieved political connections, and (3) is smaller when the focal firm is located in business development zones. This research bears rich implications for our understanding of corporate political activity in emerging economies from a resource dependence lens.
