AbstractThis article explores the ‘reading wars’ from the perspective of instructional psychology, which focuses on the environmental and instructional factors that facilitate students’ progress in learning to read. It draws on research (computational analysis and classroom-based experimental studies) to inform a novel intervention that teaches reading through systematic synthetic phonics and real books, rather than the more traditional phonically decodable reading schemes. The article discusses: (1) the criteria that inform curriculum design, (2) the instructional principles that underpin effective teaching, (3) teaching methodology, (4) an instructional analysis that explains why students are perceived to have difficulties in learning to read, and (5) the implications of instructional psychology for educational psychologists.

In an experiment similar to that of Rozin's (1971), Chinese ideographs were taught to a group of American children having great difficulty learning to read English by the phonemic approach. The quick and sure learning of the ideographs suggests we should explore less abstract, less phonemic approaches to the initial phase of teaching reading in the hope of facilitating early learning. Because English is mapped through syllable sounds, a syllable introduction is suggested as the best initial step, later introducing phonemes as syllable building blocks.

One of the biggest challenges in this country is to raise Māori achievement in literacy. Māori are the first nation, and it seems unjust that their literacy levels are not on a par with those of Pakeha despite massive efforts to close this gap. In this review it will be argued that Māori children in New Zealand fail to receive a "fair deal" (equity) in learning to read for a number of reasons, but primarily because our schools employ the wrong method of teaching reading. They do not receive a fair deal in other curriculum areas as well, possibly because the same philosophical assumptions about learning that drive our present teaching of reading are also prominent in other subject areas such as science and mathematics (see Matthews, 1995). However, this review will restrict its attention to reading.

This chapter aims at analyzing the effective teaching methodology for the iGeneration students who learn English as a second language. iGeneration students are the students who are born in between 1995 to 2012. As the iGeneration students are not interested in reading books, there has to be another method which can be used to teach them. This generation of students are using the technology effectively. The teachers who teach English for the students have to adopt a new method. To find out the best method for English language teaching, 150 students were taken for the research. They were divided into three sections namely A, B, and C sections. Each section was taught with different methods. At last, a test was conducted for all the students and marks were awarded for the test. Based on the marks scored by the students, it is found that audio-visual method was effective for learning English language.

Explosions are the leading cause of death on the battlefield [1]. These explosives, such as bombs and mines, generate shock waves which stimulate large accelerations and deformations. The resulting loads pose serious threats to military and civilians if not sufficiently evaluated and protected. The use of anti-vehicle landmines has become extremely common. Due to lower extremities being in direct contact with the floor of vehicles, the lower extremities are commonly injured during explosions [2]. These injuries can be seriously fatal. Although experimental studies have been performed to advance these understandings [2], limited progress has been made in computational analysis of shock waves on the lower extremity.

Simulation is an effective teaching methodology to enhance clinical thinking and reasoning skills among nursing students and practicing nurses. The opportunity to practice in a safe environment maintains a structure that promotes learning at all levels. There are various levels of fidelity as well as cost to facilitate simulation in the neonatal setting. This at times hinders the ability to incorporate simulation into educational practices. The purpose of this article is to provide a discussion on simulation practices in the neonatal setting, an overview of low-cost neonatal simulation exemplars, and implications for practice.

The purpose of this study was to find out the efforts that were being made by certified English teachers in teaching reading since reading is considered as one of the determiners of academic success. Descriptive qualitative research was used in this study; the subjects were two English teachers in Banda Aceh and the instrument was an interview guide. The interview questions were adapted from Fletcher, et al. (2012) that focused on curriculum, teacher preparation, teaching methodology, teaching instructions, authentic teaching materials, teachers’ perceptions toward reading attitudes of learners, barriers in teaching reading, and teaching strategies for helping ineffective readers. The interviews revealed that the efforts made by the teachers played a pivotal role at assisting students to achieve reading competency. The attitude of students toward reading was also important in the teaching-learning process. The strategies of the teachers towards the students who were not reading effectively were not in line with the strategies as suggested by some experts:  that the teacher should teach the students the strategies of how to read with interest, how to predict meanings, how to develop knowledge about the topic and so forth .These strategies were not implemented due to the situation and condition of the teaching environment. In brief, proper efforts by teachers to improve the learning environment could assist students to achieve better reading competency.

Process of learning needs development time by time. Following situation of teaching, it is important for educator to find materials which is understandable and enjoyable. One of materials that effective to be used is authentic material. The authentic materials are not designed for language learning, it is able to use as a tool to teach students and give them real experience in the classroom. Moreover, this paper aims to review research about authentic materials that is used in teaching and learning reading, especially (descriptive text). In order to get the goal, this paper reviews some researches from experts relating to the use of authentic materials in learning to read descriptive text. The author used around 40 articles which discussed about teaching English skills especially reading, authentic material and descriptive text. The author collected the data by surfing the international and national journal to be reviewed. The result shows that most of the studies recommend the educators use authentic materials to be applied in the classroom.
