Why We Drop Out of School: Voices of San School Dropouts in Botswana

Among San communities in Botswana, the rate of student disengagement from both primary and junior secondary school is an ongoing concern for educators. San learners leave school at all levels of primary and junior secondary education. Students who leave school have tended not to provide reasons as to why they are dropping out. This study investigated some of the reasons why San learners decided to drop out at primary and junior secondary school levels in the Central District in Botswana. In-depth interviews were undertaken with 20 former students living in five cattle-posts where the participants worked as cattle herders. The results indicate that some San drop out of school for reasons of survival, both within and outside school. The findings of the study offer insights into some of the issues that impede students within San communities in achieving their educational goals. Further, the findings could assist educational authorities in their review of current educational practices in Botswana so that that all citizens can be appropriately accommodated within the education system.

This research was motivated by the high independence of school dropouts in Jorong Koto Baru Lembah Gumanti District, Solok Regency, which was marked by their own income and their participation in community activities. The independence of teenagers dropping out of school was allegedly due to the efforts of parents in establishing their independence. The total population in this study were 25 teenagers who dropped out of school with a sampling of 60% so that there were 15 people. Data analysis techniques used are quantitative descriptive with percentage calculation. The results of the study found that, (1) the opportunity given by parents, (2) communication conducted by parents, and (3) the responsibility given in the formation of independence in Jorong Koto Baru was categorized as very good.Keywords: Efforts, Independence

This study aims to analyze the influence of the BOS Program on junior high school dropout decisions in Purworejo Regency and analyze individual, family and school characteristics of junior high school dropout decisions in Purworejo Regency. This type of research is quantitative. The population used in this study were all junior high school children in Purworejo Regency with 24,827 students graduating from junior high school and 30 students dropping out of school. Data analysis method used in this study is binary logit regression. The results in this study indicate that the BOS Program has no significant effect on the decision of school dropouts because BOS funds cannot cover all school operational costs so that many school fees are charged to parents and there are other factors that cause children's decision to drop out of school. Individual characteristics in the form of education and health perceptions significantly influence the decision of school dropouts. Family characteristics in the form of the number of siblings, siblings drop out of school, help parents, and academic support of parents significantly influence the decision of children dropping out of school. School characteristics such as problems with teachers, problems with friends, and distance do not have a significant effect, while school dropouts have a statistically significant effect on the decisions of dropouts. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh Program BOS terhadap keputusan anak putus sekolah tingkat SMP di Kabupaten Purworejo dan menganalisis karakteristik individu, keluarga dan sekolah terhadap keputusan anak putus sekolah tingkat SMP di Kabupaten Purworejo. Jenis penelitian ini adalah kuantitatif. Populasi yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh anak sekolah menengah pertama di Kabupaten Purworejo dengan anak yang lulus sekolah menengah pertama sejumlah 24.827 siswa dan anak putus sekolah sebanyak 30 siswa. Metode analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah regresi binary logit. Hasil dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Program BOS tidak berpengaruh signifikan terhadap keputusan anak putus sekolah karena dana BOS tidak dapat menutup semua biaya operasional sekolah sehingga banyak biaya sekolah yang dibebankan kepada orang tua siswa serta terdapatnya faktor lain yang menyebabkan keputusan anak untuk putus sekolah. Karakteristik individu berupa persepsi pendidikan dan kesehatan berpengaruh signifikan terhadap keputusan anak putus sekolah. Karakteristik keluarga berupa jumlah saudara, saudara kandung putus sekolah, membantu orang tua, dan dukungan akademik orang tua berpengaruh signifkan terhadap keputusan anak putus sekolah. Karakteristik sekolah berupa masalah dengan guru, masalah dengan teman, dan jarak tidak berpengaruh signifikan, sedangkan teman putus sekolah berpengaruh signifikan secara statistik terhadap keputusan anak putus sekolah.

This article aims to evaluate the success of Strengthening Character Education Program implemented in Integrated Islamic Junior Secondary School at Depok. The descriptive qualitative evaluation was used throughout the study. Using naturalistic approach, the evaluator collected the data through observation, in-depth interviews and relevant document study.  Interviews were conducted with the foundation chief, principals, vice principals, teachers, parents, and students. This research concludes that the implementation of the Program run as expected. During implementation, the principal was assisted by his vice principal and teachers in planning, organizing, supervising, and controlling the curricula, student activities, and infrastructures. The implementation results in improved student character as intended by the objective of the program. It is expected that this endeavor can be maintained with better and improved facilities.

The number of teenagers who drop out of school in Jorong Kampung Baru, South Solok Regency is not only from the teenagers themselves but also from their parents. This is caused by the lack of attention, the poor response of parents to adolescents who go to school and the encouragement from parents to continue their children's education to a higher level. The objectives to be achieved in this study are to describe parents' perceptions of education, parents' perceptions of teenagers dropping out of school and the factors of teenagers dropping out of school. This study uses field research methods, in the form of descriptive field research. This paper reports on a 2016-2019 study of 123 students in the most academic Year 9 class in a large, high-achieving New Zealand state boys’ secondary school. The study asked the question: “What aspects of society, schools and teachers, home environment and your own intrapersonal qualities helped or hindered your achievement in at least one academic subject?” Data were gathered through the completion of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, either in focus groups, or individually. Arguably, the most important findings related to participant perceptions of the greatest influence supporting achievement and the single most common factor identified as hindering achievement. The greatest help was identified to be students’ own intrapersonal characteristics, and the greatest hindrance was identified to be schools and teachers. This paper reports on the main findings of the research with particular emphasis on those with relevance to educators. It also considers what the major implications are for educational practice in New Zealand schools.

Mathematical communication skills of junior secondary school students in coastal area are still considered low due to the lack of contextual problem technique in the teaching of mathematics. The various potencies of the coastal area have been damaged without any concern. It is interesting to investigate the contextual problem in mathematics teaching because it can be identified, required, and related to everyday life. The objective of this study is to enhance mathematical communication skills of junior secondary school students in the coastal area. Using coastal-based contextual teaching and learning (CCTL) can enhance: (1) students’ mathematical communication skills better than conventional teaching and learning (CVTL); and (2) the students’ learning activity, fluency of argument in problem solving process, advanced question skills, and knowledge of coastal area potencies and problems.
