Transition for a Student With Special Educational Needs From Primary to Secondary School in Hong Kong

In this paper the authors employ a case study approach to investigate the transition process for a student with special educational needs from a Hong Kong subsidised primary school into a secondary school. An analysis of transcripts from individual and focus group interviews with the student, his parents, his 4 primary teachers and his 10 secondary teachers, as well as government documents and notes of school observations, indicated that a lack of formal procedures for supporting a student's transition can result in a range of significant difficulties. The discussion focuses on the urgent need to develop strategic guidelines at a systemic level within Hong Kong, with a much greater focus on a collaborative school approach rather than the current overreliance on the parents to lead this process.

This study investigates students ICT readiness, usage of online resources and information seeking behaviour of secondary school students with the specific goal of applying the results to the design of a collaborative digital library for school projects. The digital library has been conceived to support resource needs of these students as well provide the space for them to publish their school projects, which are currently submitted handwritten. The study uses the case study approach and an urban secondary school in Malaysia is chosen as the case school. This paper reports the findings from a survey and focus group interviews which indicate that the students are ready to collaboratively build the digital library as evidenced by students digital library readiness score of 69%.

Abstrak: Permasalahan dalam penelitian ini yaitu dari jumlah lembaga PAUD yang ada diKota Banjarmasin belum semuanya memiliki perencanaan khususnya pada analisispeningkatan legalitas kelembagaan PAUD dan analisis kebutuhan pendidikan untuk anak usiadini (AUD). Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan studi kasus dengan analisis data deskrtifkuantitatif dan kualitataif. Hasil studi menunjukkan bahwa: i) Disdik Kota Banjarmasin danLembaga PAUD sampel tidak melakukan perencanaan yang baik untuk pendataan analisiskebutuhan pendidikan AUD; ii) Belum semua lembaga PAUD sampel memiliki izinoperasional dikarenakan adanya persyaratan yang belum dapat dipenuhi karena memerlukanbiaya yang cukup besar seperti, pembuatan akta notaris; iii) Belum semua lembaga PAUDmemiliki sarpras sesuai dengan pedoman sarana dan prasarana dari pusat; iv) untuk membantuketersediaan sarpras, Disdik Kota Banjarmasin sudah mengalokasikan dana APBD II berupabantuan RKB, rehab kelas rusak ringan dan berat, serta bantuan APE Dalam dan Luar berupabarang. Abstract: The problem in this study is from the number of early childhood institutions in thecity of Banjarmasin not all have plans in particular to the analysis of institutional legalityincrease early childhood education and educational needs analysis for early childhood (AUD).This study uses a case study approach to data analysis of quantitative and qualitative deskrtif.The study shows that: i) Disdik Banjarmasin and Institutions ECD sample is not doing betterplanning for data analysis AUD educational needs; ii) Not all the samples of early childhoodinstitutions have an operating permit because of the requirements can not be met because itrequires significant costs such as notary deed; iii) Not all early childhood institutions haveinfrastructure accordance with the guidelines of the central infrastructure; iv) to assist theavailability infrastructure, Disdik Banjarmasin already allocated budget II in the form ofclassroom assistance, rehabilitation of damaged light and heavy classes, as well as the In andOut APE assistance in the form of goods.

COVID-19 and the shift to online teaching necessitated a change in approach for English for Academic Purposes (EAP) teachers in preparing their students for university studies. This study explored how EAP instructors coped with and adapted their provision for emergency remote teaching. The study was conducted at an English-medium university in Hong Kong and a qualitative case study approach was adopted. The results revealed two overarching themes of opportunity and challenge. While the sudden shift to online teaching forced innovation and fostered collaborative learning and feedback, teachers experienced difficulties in communicating with students and monitoring their learning. The study voices teacher perspectives in delivering EAP courses online and highlights important implications for the successful delivery of future online EAP provisions.

People in Jambi city assume that Pasar Hong Kong, a traditional market located in Jelutung sub-district, is “a Chinese market”, even some areas in the city of Jambi such as Jelutung, Koni, and Talang Banjar are dominated by the ethnic of Chinese. This research aims to explore how social inequality that occurs due to the advantages and disadvantages of an ethnic group so that it can affect individual attitudes that damage social capital. This research uses a case study approach with in-depth interviews and literature study as data collection techniques. The subjects of this study were ethnic Malay and Chinese female merchants in Pasar Hong Kong, Jambi city, Indonesia. This research found that social inequalities that occur among the female merchants of ethnic Malay and Chinese in Pasar Hongkong occur naturally, where both merchants and buyers have a high tolerance when interacting. Although sometimes there are differences in attitude when the merchants serve different ethnic buyers. The involvement of traditional leaders in managing social inequalities is very important due to the lack of assimilation among ethnic Malay and Chinese.

Purpose of study: This paper presents preliminary results of a study that aims to understand the transition process (TP) delivered at schools for students with special educational needs (SEN). Methods: A questionnaire was developed taking into account the following dimensions: Professional performance; TP of students with SEN, adaptations in the learning process, training pathways and TP in the labour market. Participants were 616 teachers who work in the TP. Findings and results: Results demonstrate that there should exist closer links between schools and the community; the existed training pathways are more directed to mild SEN, and the majority of the teachers agree that there should be more local business community’s awareness to include these students as potential employees. Conclusions and recommendations: Conclusions of this study illustrate that the access of these students to appropriate training can be fundamental in promoting professional qualification and inclusion of students with SEN.   Keywords: Transition process, individual transition plan, special educational needs.
