The GLINT South testbed for nulling interferometry with photonics: Design and on-sky results at the Anglo-Australian Telescope

Abstract In 1978, Bracewell suggested the technique of nulling interferometry to directly image exoplanets which would enable characterisation of their surfaces, atmospheres, weather, and possibly determine their capacity to host life. The contrast needed to discriminate starlight reflected by a terrestrial-type planet from the glare of its host star lies at or beyond a forbidding $10^{-10}$ for an exo-Earth in the habitable zone around a Sun-like star at near-infrared wavelengths, necessitating instrumentation with extremely precise control of the light. Guided Light Interferometric Nulling Technology (GLINT) is a testbed for new photonic devices conceived to overcome the challenges posed by nulling interferometry. At its heart, GLINT employs a single-mode nulling photonic chip fabricated by direct-write technology to coherently combine starlight from an arbitrarily large telescope at 1 550 nm. It operates in combination with an actuated segmented mirror in a closed-loop control system, to produce and sustain a deep null throughout observations. The GLINT South prototype interfaces the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope and was tested on a sample of bright Mira variable stars. Successful and continuous starlight injection into the photonic chip was achieved. A statistical model of the data was constructed, enabling a data reduction algorithm to retrieve contrast ratios of about $10^{-3}$ . As a byproduct of this analysis, stellar angular diameters that were below the telescope diffraction limit ( $\sim$ 100 mas) were recovered with 1 $\sigma$ accuracy and shown to be in agreement with literature values despite working in the seeing-limited regime. GLINT South serves as a demonstration of the capability of direct-write photonic technology for achieving coherent, stable nulling of starlight, which will encourage further technological developments towards the goal of directly imaging exoplanets with future large ground based and space telescopes.

 A quadrotor is a four-rotor aircraft capable of vertical take-off and landing, hovering, forward flight, and having great maneuverability. Its platform can be made in a small size make it convenient for indoor applications as well as for outdoor uses. In model there are four input forces that are essentially the thrust provided by each propeller attached to each motor with a fixed angle. The quadrotor is basically considered an unstable system because of the aerodynamic effects; consequently, a close-loop control system is required to achieve stability and autonomy. Such system must enable the quadrotor to reach the desired attitude as fast as possible without any steady state error. In this paper, an optimal controller is designed based on a Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) control method to obtain stability in flying the quadrotor. The dynamic model of this vehicle will be also explained by using Euler-Newton method. The mechanical design was performed along with the design of the controlling algorithm. Matlab Simulink was used to test and analyze the performance of the proposed control strategy. The experimental results on the quadrotor demonstrated the effectiveness of the methodology used.

AbstractControlling nonlinear optical signals electrically offers many opportunities for technological developments. Lanthanide-activated nanoparticles have recently emerged as leading platforms for nonlinear upconversion of infra-red excitation within nanometric volumes. However, manipulation of upconversion emission is restricted to varying percentages of component materials, nanocrystal structure, and optical pumping conditions. Here, we report temporal modulation of anti-Stokes luminescence by coupling upconversion nanoparticles with an electrochemically responsive molecule. By electrically tailoring orbital energy levels of the molecules anchored on nanoparticle surfaces, we demonstrate reversible control of molecular absorption, resulting in dynamic colour editing of anti-Stokes luminescence at single-particle resolution. Moreover, we show that a programmable logic gate array based on opto-electrochemical modulation can be constructed to convert information-encrypted electrical signals into visible patterns with millisecond photonic readout. These findings offer insights into precise control of anti-Stokes luminescence, while enabling a host of applications from low-threshold infrared logic switches to multichannel, high-fidelity photonic circuits.

An important stage in robust control design is to define the desired performances of the closed loop control system using the models of the frequency sensitivity functions S. If the frequency sensitivity functions remain within the limits imposed by these models, the control performances are met. In terms of the sensitivity functions, the specifications include: shape of S over selected frequency ranges, peak magnitude of S, bandwidth frequency, and tracking error at selected frequencies. In this context, this paper presents a study of the effects of the specifications of the weighting functions on the performances of robust control systems.

An expert control system based on transient response patterns and expert system techniques is proposed in this paper. Depending on the features of the closed-loop control system determines the control decision and adjusts the parameters of the controller. The proposed method requires minimal proper information about the controlled plant and, with the linear re-excitation learning method, the system is kept satisfying the performance criterion.

AbstractTo improve cell vitality, sufficient oxygen supply is an important factor. A deficiency in oxygen is called Hypoxia and can influence for example tumor growth or inflammatory processes. Hypoxia assays are usually performed with the help of animal or static human cell culture models. The main disadvantage of these methods is that the results are hardly transferable to the human physiology. Microfluidic 3D cell cultivation systems for perfused hypoxia assays may overcome this issue since they can mimic the in-vivo situation in the human body much better. Such a Hypoxia-on-a-Chip system was recently developed. The chip system consists of several individually laser-structured layers which are bonded using a hot press or chemical treatment. Oxygen sensing spots are integrated into the system which can be monitored continuously with an optical sensor by means of fluorescence lifetime detection.Hereby presented is the developed hard- and software requiered to control the oxygen content within this microfluidic system. This system forms a closed-loop control system which is parameterized and evaluated.

The paper proposes a cascade control strategy of speed feedback in inner loop and temperature feedback in outer ring for hydro-viscous driven fan cooling system, and compares the simulation of PID and fuzzy PID. The simulation result shows that the double-loop control system while the response time longer, but much smaller overshoot, can achieve a good feedback to adjust the fan speed and temperature and realize stepless speed regulation of hydro-viscous driven fan cooling system under the premise of stability for fan speed and system temperature.
