Alleviation of pitch-up on delta wings using distributed porosity

Abstract An experimental investigation was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of distributed surface porosity for the alleviation of pitch-up on a delta wing. Tests were undertaken using a 65° sweep delta wing with distributed porosity evaluated at various locations on the wing. Force balance, on and off surface flow visualisation and flow field surveys using a multi-hole probe were undertaken. The data shows that distributed porosity applied along the wing leading edge at the apex is effective in eliminating pitch-up whilst incurring a minimal performance cost. Trailing edge porosity generally degraded performance.

SummarySolutions to the problem of separated flow past slender delta wings for moderate values of a suitably defined incidence parameter have been calculated by Smith, using a vortex sheet model. By increasing the accuracy of the finite-difference technique, and by replacing Smith’s original nested iteration procedure, to solve the non-linear simultaneous equations that arise, by a Newton’s method, it is possible to extend the range of the incidence parameter over which solutions can be obtained. Furthermore for sufficiently small values of the incidence parameter, new and unexpected results in the form of vortex systems that originate inboard from the leading edge have been discovered. These new solutions are the only solutions, to the author’s knowledge, of a vortex sheet leaving a smooth surface.Interest has centred upon the shape of the finite vortex sheet, the position of the isolated vortex, and the lift, and variations of these quantities are shown as functions of the incidence parameter. Although no experimental evidence is available, comparisons are made with the simpler Brown and Michael model in which all the vorticity is assumed to be concentrated onto an isolated line vortex. Agreement between these two models becomes very close as the value of the incidence parameter is reduced.

A description is given of the distribution of vorticity in the surface of thin wings with large leading edge sweep. Although the delta wing is chosen as the basic plan form the deductions are general and applicable to other types of wing. The conclusions are illustrated with experimental evidence from a water tunnel.

AbstractAn experimental study investigating the aerodynamic characteristics of generic delta wing-body combinations up to high angles of attack was carried out at a subsonic Mach number. Three delta wings having sharp leading edges and sweep angles of 50°, 60° and 70° were tested with two forebody configurations providing a variation of the nose fineness ratio. Measurements made included six-component forces and moments, limited static pressures on the wing lee-side and surface flow visualisation studies. The results showed symmetric flow features up to an incidence of about 25°, beyond which significant asymmetry was evident due to wing vortex breakdown, forebody vortex asymmetry or both. At higher incidence, varying degrees of forebody-wing vortex interaction effects were seen in the mean loads, which depended on the wing sweep and the nose fineness ratio. The vortex breakdown on these wings was found to be a gradual process, as implied by the wing pressures and the mean aerodynamic loads. Effects of forebody vortex asymmetry on the wing-body aerodynamics have also been assessed. Comparison of Datcom estimates with experimental data of longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics on all three wing-body combinations indicated good agreement in the symmetric flow regime.

Investigations by one of the authors in connection with the design of a fan for a blower type of wind tunnel showed that regular and repeatable dust patterns occurred on the blades of a one-quarter scale model fan of 18 inches diameter. Dust was deposited on the fan blades along the leading-edge and on the suction surface over an area thought to be the turbulent region of the boundary layer. The introduction of isolated protuberances on the dust free area of a blade gave rise to turbulence wedges in which dust was also deposited and this was interpreted as confirmation of the coincidence of the dust deposits with regions of turbulent boundary-layer flow. These deposits showed the existence of a considerable extent of laminar flow on the suction surface of each blade close to the root, a region where high lift coefficients would be expected with associated adverse pressure gradients. Two-dimensional wind tunnel experiments were made to confirm the interpretation of the observed dust patterns by comparison with the smoke filament and volatile liquid methods of flow visualisation and these are reported in Reference 2.

The counter rotating wing tip vortices produced by the aircraft continues to be a big concern for the aviation industry and the aircraft manufacturers due to its hazardous effects on the flight safety and aircraft efficiency. The strength of the vortices poses severe problems to the aircraft operations. Manufacturers developed various wingtip devices to alleviate this problem, but still it is not fully understood and solved. In this thesis, the effectiveness of using a half delta wing at the tips is investigated. The flow field over a low aspect ratio NACA 0015 wing fitted with a slender sharp half delta wing with a leading edge sweep angle 700 at a Reynolds number 1.87 ×105 is investigated. Particle image velocimetry is used to quantify the vortex structure and force balance measurements are used to calculate the aerodynamic data of the wing. The peak vorticity, peak tangential velocity are decreased due to the addition of half delta wing. The over-all radius of the wingtip vortex increased showing a diffused vortex due to the addition of the half delta wing. The core circulation is decreased leading to a lower strength vortex. Though the tip device increased the drag, it increases the aerodynamic efficiency through the improvement in L/D.

SummaryIn this paper an experiment is described in which a detailed study was made of the flow field associated with a slender sharp-edged delta wing which was rolling steadily at zero angle of attack to an air stream. The investigation was made by performing two pressure surveys: first , one of the static pressure acting on the wing’s surface and second by measuring the total-head distribution in the neighbourhood of the wing. From the former the local rolling-moment coefficients, Clp, are evaluated and these are compared with the predictions for attached flow, thus assessing the contributions to the forces acting on the wing which arise as a consequence of the leading-edge separations. The second set of surveys is used to construct a picture of the flow-field details and this is compared with that known to occur on a similar wing when it is set at an angle of attack to the airstream. One interesting finding is that the secondary separation which appears to cause the discrepancy between the theoretical predictions and the measurements made on slender wings at incidence, is absent in this configuration and thus it is concluded that these data could be used for a more meaningful test of the theory.

ABSTRACTAn experimental study has been carried out to explore the effect of propeller-induced slipstream on the vortex flow field on a fixed-wing Micro Air Vehicle (MAV). Experiments were conducted at a freestream velocity of 10 m/s, corresponding to a Reynolds number based on a root chord of about 1.6 × 105. Surface flow topology on the surface of the MAV wing at propeller-off and propeller-on conditions was captured using surface oil flow visualisation at four angles of incidence. The mean off-body flow over the MAV was documented in the four spanwise planes at different chord position using Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry (SPIV) technique at angle-of-attack of 24° for both conditions. The oil flow visualisation showed minimal differences in flow patterns for propeller-off and propeller-on conditions at 10° and 15° incidence. The small asymmetry between port and starboard side observed at 20° during the propeller-off condition became significantly pronounced at 24°. The fuselage stub which is necessary for housing the motor of the propeller was seen to have a significant effect on the flow symmetry at large incidences that can occur when the MAV encounters sudden vertical gusts. Switching on the propeller restored the symmetry at both incidences. SPIV measurements were carried out at the incidence of 24° which exhibited the highest asymmetry. The off-body data shows the re-establishment of symmetry during propeller-on condition owing to the increase in the magnitude of spanwise and vertical velocities as a result of the propeller slipstream. The findings emphasise the importance of considering the propeller flow and design of the motor housing while evaluating the aerodynamics of low-aspect-ratio MAVs.

The impact of Gurney flaplike strips, of different geometric configurations and heights, on the aerodynamic characteristics and the tip vortices generated by a reverse delta wing (RDW) was investigated via force-balance measurement and particle image velocimetry (PIV). The addition of side-edge strips (SESs) caused a leftward shift of the lift curve, resembling a conventional trailing-edge flap. The large lift increment overwhelmed the corresponding drag increase, thereby leading to an improved lift-to-drag ratio compared to the baseline wing. The lift and drag coefficients were also found to increase with the strip height. The SES-equipped wing also produced a strengthened vortex compared to its baseline wing counterpart. The leading-edge strips (LESs) were, however, found to persistently produce a greatly diffused vortex flow as well as a small-than-baseline-wing lift in the prestall α regime. The downward LES delivered a delayed stall and an increased maximum lift coefficient compared to the baseline wing. The LESs provide a potential wingtip vortex control alternative, while the SESs can enhance the aerodynamic performance of the RDW.
