SummaryIn this paper an experiment is described in which a detailed study was made of the flow field associated with a slender sharp-edged delta wing which was rolling steadily at zero angle of attack to an air stream. The investigation was made by performing two pressure surveys: first , one of the static pressure acting on the wing’s surface and second by measuring the total-head distribution in the neighbourhood of the wing. From the former the local rolling-moment coefficients, Clp, are evaluated and these are compared with the predictions for attached flow, thus assessing the contributions to the forces acting on the wing which arise as a consequence of the leading-edge separations. The second set of surveys is used to construct a picture of the flow-field details and this is compared with that known to occur on a similar wing when it is set at an angle of attack to the airstream. One interesting finding is that the secondary separation which appears to cause the discrepancy between the theoretical predictions and the measurements made on slender wings at incidence, is absent in this configuration and thus it is concluded that these data could be used for a more meaningful test of the theory.

AbstractA canonical study is developed to investigate the unsteady interactions of a streamwise-oriented vortex impinging upon a finite surface using high-fidelity simulation. As a model problem, an analytically defined vortex superimposed on a free stream is convected towards an aspect-ratio-six ($\mathit{AR}=6$) plate oriented at an angle of ${\it\alpha}=4^{\circ }$ and Reynolds number of $\mathit{Re}=20\,000$ in order to characterize the unsteady modes of interaction resulting from different spanwise positions of the incoming vortex. Outboard, tip-aligned and inboard positioning are shown to produce three distinct flow regimes: when the vortex is positioned outboard of, but in close proximity to, the wingtip, it pairs with the tip vortex to form a dipole that propels itself away from the plate through mutual induction, and also leads to an enhancement of the tip vortex. When the incoming vortex is aligned with the wingtip, the tip vortex is initially strengthened by the proximity of the incident vortex, but both structures attenuate into the wake as instabilities arise in the pair’s feeding sheets from the entrainment of opposite-signed vorticity into either structure. Finally, when the incident vortex is positioned inboard of the wingtip, the vortex bifurcates in the time-mean sense with portions convecting above and below the wing, and the tip vortex is mostly suppressed. The time-mean bifurcation is actually a result of an unsteady spiralling instability in the vortex core that reorients the vortex as it impacts the leading edge, pinches off, and alternately attaches to either side of the wing. The increased effective angle of attack inboard of impingement enhances the three-dimensional recirculation region created by the separated boundary layer off the leading edge which draws fluid from the incident vortex inboard and diminishes its impact on the outboard section of the wing. The slight but remaining downwash present outboard of impingement reduces the effective angle of attack in that region, resulting in a small separation bubble on either side of the wing in the time-mean solution, effectively unloading the tip outboard of impingement and suppressing the tip vortex. All incident vortex positions provide substantial increases in the wing’s lift-to-drag ratio; however, significant sustained rolling moments also result. As the vortex is brought inboard, the rolling moment diminishes and eventually switches sign as the reduced outboard loading balances the augmented sectional lift inboard of impingement.

Abstract An asymmetric structure of volute in a supercritical carbon dioxide centrifugal compressor induces a non-uniform circumferential distribution of the upstream flow field, which inevitably affects the formation of a two-phase region of carbon dioxide in an impeller. In this work, unsteady simulations for centrifugal compressors were conducted. First, the influence of low static strip induced by low static pressure near volute tongue on the impeller flow field was presented. Then, the non-uniform flow field distribution in the impeller passages and flow characteristics of the passages at the impeller inlet were obtained. Finally, the two-phase regions in the impeller were presented. The results demonstrate that for a centrifugal compressor with volute, the two-phase region appears not only on the suction surface of the leading edge of the blade, but also in some impeller passages, on the pressure surface of the blade near the leading edge, and in the leading edge and mid-chord of tip clearance, under the design conditions. The low static pressure strip induced by the volute leads to a high-speed region in the impeller passages where the temperature and pressure of supercritical carbon dioxide fall below the critical point and carbon dioxide enters the two-phase region. Meanwhile, the static pressure on the blade surface is distorted under the influence of a high-speed region in the passages, resulting in the formation of a two-phase region at the tip clearance. The flow distortion of passages at the impeller inlet results in the appearance of two-phase regions on the both sides of leading edge of the blade. The dryness on the suction side of the blade leading edge and the leading edge of the tip clearance is lower, which indicated that the proportion of liquid-phase carbon dioxide is higher in these two-phase regions.

This paper investigates the aerodynamics of a transonic impeller using static pressure measurements. The impeller is a high-speed, high-pressure-ratio wheel used in small gas turbine engines. The experiment was conducted on the single stage centrifugal compressor facility in the compressor research laboratory at Purdue University. Data were acquired from choke to near-surge at four different corrected speeds (Nc) from 80% to 100% design speed, which covers both subsonic and supersonic inlet conditions. Details of the impeller flow field are discussed using data acquired from both steady and time-resolved static pressure measurements along the impeller shroud. The flow field is compared at different loading conditions, from subsonic to supersonic inlet conditions. The impeller performance was strongly dependent on the inducer, where the majority of relative diffusion occurs. The inducer diffuses flow more efficiently for inlet tip relative Mach numbers close to unity, and the performance diminishes at other Mach numbers. Shock waves emerging upstream of the impeller leading edge were observed from 90% to 100% corrected speed, and they move towards the impeller trailing edge as the inlet tip relative Mach number increases. There is no shock wave present in the inducer at 80% corrected speed. However, a high-loss region near the inducer throat was observed at 80% corrected speed resulting in a lower impeller efficiency at subsonic inlet conditions.

ABSTRACTA forward spike attached to a blunt body significantly alters its flow field characteristics and influences aerodynamic characteristics at hypersonic flow due to formation of separated flow and re-circulation region around the spiked body. An experimental investigation was performed to measure aerodynamic forces for spikes blunt bodies with a conical, hemispherical and flat-face spike at Mach 6 and at an angle-of-attack range from 0° to 8° and length-to-diameterL/Dratio of spike varies from 0.5 to 2.0, whereLis the length of the spike andDis diameter of blunt body. The shape of the leading edge of the spiked blunt body reveals different types of flow field features in the formation of a shock wave, shear layer, flow separation, re-circulation region and re-attachment shock. They are analysed with the help of schlieren pictures. The shock distance ahead of the hemisphere and the flat-face spike is compared with the analytical solution and is showing satisfactory agreement with the schlieren pictures. The influence of geometrical parameters of the spike, the shape of the spike tip and angle-of-attack on the aerodynamic coefficients are investigated by measuring aerodynamic forces in a hypersonic wind tunnel. It is found that a maximum reduction of drag of about 77% was found for hemisphere spike ofL/D= 2.0 at zero angle-of-attack. Consideration for compensation of increased pitching moment is required to stabilise the aerodynamic forces.

Flow over a conventional delta wing has been studied experimentally at a subsonic flow of 20 m/sec and the flow field developed at higher angle of attack varying from 10° to 20° has been captured. A vortex generator is mounted on the leeward surface of the delta wing and its effect on the flow field is studied. The set of wing tip vortices generated over the delta wing is captured by the oil flow visualization and the streamline over the delta wing surface captured with and without a vortex generator are compared. Based on the qualitative results, the effect of the vortex generator on the lift coefficient is anticipated. Further, force measurement is carried out to quantitatively analyze the effect of vortex generator on the lift and drag coefficient experienced by the delta wing and justify the anticipation made out of the qualitative oil flow visualization tests. In the present study, the effect of mounting of a vortex generator is found to be minimal on the lift coefficient experienced by the delta wing. However, a significant reduction in the drag coefficient with increase in angle of attack was observed by mounting a typical vortex generator.

This paper focuses on the numerical and experimental characterization of the vortex structures that develop along a simplified geometry of a wing equipped with pylon-mounted engine at low speed/high angle of attack flight conditions. In these conditions, the presence of the engine installation under the wing induces a complex and unsteady vortical flow field at the nacelle/pylon/wing junctions which interacts with the upper wing boundary layer and leads to a drop of aircraft performances. In order to gain insight into the physics driving this interaction, it is proposed to isolate its fundamental mechanisms by simplifying the problem. The parameters of interest that led to the simplification of the model are first described. As a first step into a more comprehensive knowledge of this complex physics, this study is initially conducted at a Reynolds number of 200000, based on the chord wing and on the free stream velocity. Two configurations of angle of attack and sideslip angles (α = 8°/β = 0° and α = 8°/β = 30°) have been investigated. This work relies on unsteady RANS computations, oil flow visualizations and 3C-PIV measurements. The vortex dynamics thus produced is described in terms of vortex core position, intensity, size and turbulent intensity thanks to a vortex tracking post-processing algorithm. In addition, the analysis of the velocity flow field obtained from the PIV measurements will highlight the influence of the longitudinal vortex issued from the pylon/wing junction on the separation process of the boundary layer near the upper wing leading-edge.

In this paper, the large eddy simulation is utilized to simulate the flow field in a mixed-flow pump based on the standard Smagorinsky subgrid scale model, which is combined with the experiments to investigate pressure fluctuations under low flow conditions. The experimental results indicated that the amplitude of fluctuation at the impeller inlet is the highest, and increases with the reduction of the flow rate. The main frequencies of pressure fluctuation at the impeller inlet, impeller outlet, and vane inlet are blades passing frequency, while the main frequency at the vane outlet changes with the flow rate. The results of the simulation showed that the axial plane velocity at impeller inlet undergoes little change under 0.8 Qopt. In case of 0.4 Qopt, however, the flow field at impeller inlet becomes complicated with the axial plane velocity changing significantly. The flow separation is generated at the leading edge of the suction surface at t* = 0.0416 under 0.4 Qopt, which is caused by the increase of the incidence angle and the influence of the tip leakage flow. When the impeller rotates from t* = 0.0416 to t* = 0.1249, the flow separation intensified and the swirling strength of the separation vortex is gradually increased, leading to the reduction of the static pressure, the rise of adverse pressure gradient, and the generation of backflow. The static pressure at the leading edge of the impeller recovers gradually until the backflow is reached. In addition, the flow separation is the main reason for the intensification of the pressure fluctuation.

An analytical and experimental study of axial compressor-diffuser interaction in circumferentially non-uniform flow is reported. An analysis of non-axisymmetric flow in an annular diffuser is presented, based on an inviscid rotational core flow plus the use of a diffuser effective area ratio to account for boundary layer blockage. The analysis is applied to the prediction of the diffuser flow field associated with the presence of a circumferential total pressure distortion. It is found that large static pressure non-uniformities can exist at the inlet of diffusers that are short compared with their mean circumferences, as is usually the case in turbomachinery applications. The analysis is coupled to an asymmetric compressor flow field prediction to provide a method for calculating the effect of an exit diffuser on compressor performance with distortion. It is shown that the velocity defect seen by the compressor can be substantially increased by the presence of the diffuser. The experiments were directed at assessing the method used to predict the flow in the diffuser. Measurements were carried out of the inlet static pressure distortion associated with a circumferentially non-uniform total pressure distribution. The results are found to be in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.
