The importance of time of spraying, desiccant type and harvest time on industrial fibre production from stand-retted fibre flax (Linum usitatissimum)

SUMMARYEven and successful retting of flax through application of a desiccating herbicide and stand-retting is a major constraint to increasing its incorporation in industrial products. With the release of a new form of glyphosate based on the isopropylamine (IPA) salt with biactivator (Roundup Biactive, Monsanto Ltd), a field trial was planted using three flax varieties with differing levels of ease of desiccation at the Henfaes Research Centre, University of Wales Bangor in 2004. The crop was sprayed at four different times of maturity: mid-point of flowering plus 7 days (MPF+7), MPF+14, MPF+21 or MPF+28 using two different herbicide treatments; Roundup Biactive (Monsanto PLC) or Roundup Biactive+Restore (40% ammonium sulphate, AmegA Sciences PLC). Fibre quality was assessed following retting and the ease of decortication was measured. The highest fibre yields were obtained from the MPF+28 spray date, and from the Biactive herbicide treatment. Although lower yields were recorded with the Biactive+Restore treatment, the stems were easier to decorticate. It is suggested that an early sowing date and the use of the IPA salt-based glyphosate with biactivator, and careful monitoring of the crop during the retting process, contributed to the early and successful harvest from the MPF+28 plots, allowing mature seeds as well as fibre to be harvested from the flax plants.

AC Emerson, a medium-early maturing oilseed flax (Linum usitatissimum L.), was released by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Agri-Food Diversification Research Centre, Morden, Manitoba, in 1994. The cultivar has high oil quality, medium-large seed size and was high yielding in both early and late seeding tests in the Black and the Brown Soil zones of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Because of its chlorosis tolerance, it is particularly well suited to the calcareous soils of Manitoba. It is immune to North American races of rust caused by Melampsora lini and moderately resistant to wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lini. The cultivar has high oil quality, medium-large seed size, good lodging resistance, and with good yielding in both early and late seeding in the Black and the Brown Soil zones of the prairies. It is immune to North American races of rust caused by Melampsora lini and moderately resistant to wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lini. Two field studies were conducted at Morden, Manitoba in 1992 and 1993 to investigate the effect of seeding depth and seeding rate on flax and lentil recovery following spring application of dinitroanaline herbicides. In the first study, the effect of seeding depth on flax and lentil tolerance to ethalfluralin, pendimethalin and trifluralin, applied preplant soil incorporated at 1.1 kg a.i. ha−1 in the spring, was investigated. Deep seeding (6 cm) reduced flax population density by 59%, averaged over 2 yr, when compared with shallow seeding (3 cm). Ethalfluralin, pendimethalin and trifluralin, reduced flax population density, but the effect of herbicide was less when flax was seeded shallow. Trifluralin and ethalfluralin reduced flax yield more when the crop was seeded deep than when seeded shallow. Herbicide treatments had no effect on flax yield when the crop was seeded shallow. Ethalfluralin and trifluralin reduced lentil population density and seed yield in one year only. Pendimethalin did not reduce lentil population density or seed yield. Deep seeding did not affect lentil population density, seed yield or phytotoxicity of dinitroanalines in this crop. In a second study, flax and lentil were seeded at 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 kg ha−1 at 3 and 6 cm planting depths to assess the effect of seeding depth and seeding rate on crop recovery following spring application of ethalfluralin. In ethalfluralin treated plots, seeding rate had to be increased from 60 to > 90 kg ha−1 to achieve similar population densities as 45 kg ha−1 in untreated plots. Flax yields were unaffected by ethalfluralin when the crop was seeded shallow, but yields were reduced significantly when the crop was seeded deep. Lentil population density increased linearly with seeding rate. Lentil population density was unaffected by seeding depth or herbicide treatment. Ethalfluralin did not reduce lentil yield in either year. Lentil yields increased with seeding rate up to 30 kg ha−1, with little further increase in yield for seeding rates between 30 and 90 kg ha−1. Flax (Linum usitatissimum L) yield of stem and seeds and them quality is influenced by a number of harmful diseases but investigation about pathogens in recent years have not been done in Latvia. Each stage of development of disease is important in the pathogen life cycle and requires certain condition. Goal of this study have identify possibilities of the pathogens and were assess disease severity depending on the genotypes on flax in variable environmental conditions. The resistance to the diseases for 24 flax genotypes and standard variety ‘Vega 2’ were evaluated. The field trials have been carried out over the period from 2015 to 2016 at the Research Centre of Priekuli, part of Vilani in Latgale. Disease progress was measured every week, and for each treatment, severity of diseases index and the area under the disease progressive curve (AUDPC) were calculated. SUMMARYThe combined effect of soil moisture stress in the root zone and atmospheric evaporative demand on the growth and yield of two chickpea cultivars was investigated using four sowing dates and three irrigation regimes within each sowing date during the 1980–81 and 1981–82 seasons at the ICRISAT research centre. Total water use was different for different irrigation regimes and sowing dates and there were differences in the total dry weight and seed yield of chickpea between the sowing dates and the irrigation regimes. The cultivars did not differ in dry matter production. However, cv. Annigeri yielded more than cv. L-550 under all irrigation regimes. Differences in seed weight were observed between irrigation regimes and sowing dates and there were interactions between sowing dates and cultivars and between irrigation regimes, sowing dates and cultivars. High air temperatures during the period from flowering to maturity reduced the time to maturity of late-sown chickpea and led to reduced seed size and lower yields. The efficiency of use of applied water was also low for the late-sown crop.

Perennial cereal rye (PC rye) is a new crop that is being developed at the Lethbridge Research Centre for the production of silage for cattle. Its ability to compete with weeds during establishment and tolerance to herbicides for weed control was unknown. Therefore, experiments were established with PC rye, and several herbicide treatments were applied to test crop tolerance and weed control. PC rye was not injured by bromoxynil/MCPA, 2,4-D, thifensulfuron/tribenuron, fenoxaprop, clodinafop-propargyl, and tralkoxydim. Combinations of herbicides for broadleaf weed control and annual grass control usually reduced weed dry matter (DM) to < 5 g m-2 in the establishment year. Weeds made up 20 to 36% of the total DM when herbicides were not applied. However, this level of weed content did not affect the digestibility of the forage samples or the total DM produced as weed DM compensated for reduced PC rye yield in weedy plots. Also, the presence of weeds during establishment of PC rye did not affect weed content or PC rye yields the year after establishment.
