Two sample populations, one refugee and one resident, were studied. The frequencies of consanguineous marriages came out to be 49·8% and 55·4%, respectively, for the refugees and the residents. Caste endogamy was dominant both in the residents and the refugees. The mean coefficient of inbreeding was calculated to be 0·0303 for the refugee population and 0·0332 for the resident population samples. First cousin marriage was the dominant type of marriage in both samples; father’s brother’s daughter (FBD) marriage was more frequent among the refugees while mother’s brother’s daughter (MBD) marriage was more frequent among the residents. Education has no decreasing effect on the incidence of consanguineous marriages. A significant difference in the pattern of marriages in the refugees is observed after the Saur Revolution of 1979.

SummaryThe prevalence of consanguinity in eight provinces of Afghanistan has recently been reported by Saify & Saadat (2012). The present cross-sectional study was done in order to illustrate the prevalence and types of consanguineous marriages among other populations of Afghanistan. Data on types of marriages were collected using a simple questionnaire. The total number of couples in this study was 5200 from the following provinces: Farah, Ghazni, Herat, Hilmand, Kabul, Kandahar, Logar, Parwan and Wardak. Consanguineous marriages were classified by the degree of relationship between couples: double first cousins, first cousins, first cousins once removed, second cousins and beyond second cousins. The coefficient of inbreeding (F) was calculated for each couple and the mean coefficient of inbreeding (α) estimated for each population. The α in the country was 0.0226, ranging from 0.0203 in Farah province to 0.0246 in Herat province. There were significant differences between provinces for frequencies of different types of marriages (p<0.001). First cousin marriages (21.7%) were the most common type of consanguineous marriages, followed by second cousins (16.0%), first cousins once removed (14.0%), beyond second cousins (6.9%) and double first cousins (1.6%). There was significant difference between ethnic groups for the types of marriages (p<0.001). Tajiks (Soni) and Sadats showed the lowest (α=0.0215) and highest (α=0.0242) levels of consanguinity among ethnic groups in Afghanistan, respectively. The present study shows that the Afghani populations, the same as other Islamic populations, have high levels of consanguinity.

The purpose of this work is to contribute to the description of marital practices in Northern Morocco, to follow the evolution of these practices, and to determine the motives for marriages between relatives. Thus our results show a highly significant positive correlation between the age of the two spouses (r = 0.619, p <0.001), with the mean age of the mothers being 49.03 ± 6.56 years, while for the fathers it is 56,02 ± 6,16 years with a difference of 7 years between the two spouses in the current generation. For consanguineous marriages, we identified 51 relatives, namely a frequency of 25.4% for the generation of studied couples GCE, 13.3% for the generation of paternal grandparents GGPP, and 17.5% for the generation of maternal grandparents GGPM. The intergenerational comparison reveals a highly significant increase in the percentage of consanguinity, ranging from the generation of grandparents (15.4%) to that of the studied couples (25.4%), with a difference of 10% (p˂0.001). These results also show that there is a strong association between the prevalence of consanguineous marriages and the group of women under 19 years old (p = 0.002), whereas for husbands it is noted that There is no association between marital status and age at marriage. The coefficient of consanguinity estimated by isonymy is almost twice as large as the coefficient of inbreeding estimated by genealogy.

Abstract Background Pectus excavatum (PEX) is a depression of the sternum relative to the costal cartilages. The Haller index (HI) is an anatomical indicator of the severity of PEX that is calculated from CT. Purpose We evaluated the influence of anatomical severity of PEX as indicated by HI on the severity of actual heart compression and ECG findings Methods A total of 28 patients (23 males; 20±19 years) with PEX underwent unenhanced CT and ECG. On CT, HI and degree of compression of right (RA) and left atria (LA) were evaluated simultaneously. Results As indicated by CT, the mean HI was 5.80±2.34. We observed 7, 15, 5, and 1 patient with none, mild, moderate, or severe RA compression, respectively. In addition, we observed 8, 13, 4, and 3 patients with none, mild, moderate, or severe LA compressions, respectively. The mean HI was calculated as 4.28±0.92, 5.40±2.01, 6.85±1.81, and 9.61±0.00 in patients with none, mild, moderate, or severe RA, respectively, and the findings were significant (P=0.021). The mean HI was calculated as 4.17±0.91, 5.97±2.23, 5.95±1.51, and 6.69±2.93 in patients with none, mild, moderate, or severe LA compression, respectively, although the findings were not significant (P=0.145). On ECG, a P wave with a negative portion >1 mm in depth and >40 ms in duration in the V1 lead, complete or incomplete right bundle branch block (RBBB), sinus arrhythmia, or right-axis deviation of a QRS wave were diagnosed in 23, 10, 8, and 6 patients, respectively. The HI between patients with (n=23) and without (n=5) a negative portion of the P wave in the V1 lead showed a significant difference (6.45±2.43 vs. 4.62±1.68; P<0.05). The correlation coefficient between absolute values of the maximum negative portion of the P wave in the V1 lead and HI was 0.36 (n=28). The HI between patients with and without a complete or incomplete RBBB showed a significant difference (6.98±2.43 vs. 5.14±2.07; P<0.05). The HI between patients with and without a sinus arrhythmia did not show a significant difference (5.45±2.66 vs. 5.94±2.25). The HI between patients with and without a right axis deviation on a QRS wave also did not show a significant difference (4.76±1.53 vs. 6.08±2.64). The inter-observer agreement of HI between the two observers was 0.978. Haller index and heart compression on CT Conclusion In patients with PEX, compression of RA on CT, a negative portion of the P wave in V1, complete or incomplete RBBB, sinus arrhythmia, and a right axis deviation on a QRS wave are common. The degree of compression of RA on CT, negative portion of the P wave in the V1 lead and complete or incomplete RBBB on ECG are associated with anatomical severity as indicated by the HI. However, our results showed that HI severity was unrelated to either the degree of compression of LA on CT, or sinus arrhythmia and right-axis deviation of the QRS wave on ECG. These observations may be due to variation of location of maximum sternum depression, such as high- or low-positioned dominant-type compressions.

SummaryConsanguineous marriage is the union of individuals having at least one common ancestor. The present cross-sectional study was done in order to illustrate the prevalence and types of consanguineous marriages in the Syrian Arab Republic. Data on consanguineous marriages were collected using a simple questionnaire. The total number of couples in this study was 67,958 (urban areas: 36,574 couples; rural areas: 31,384 couples) from the following provinces: Damascus, Hamah, Tartous, Latakia, Al Raqa, Homs, Edlep and Aleppo. In each province urban and rural areas were surveyed. Consanguineous marriage was classified by the degree of relationship between couples: double first cousins (F=1/8), first cousins (F=1/16), second cousins (F=1/64) and beyond second cousins (F<1/64). The coefficient of inbreeding (F) was calculated for each couple and the mean coefficient of inbreeding (α) estimated for the population of each province, stratified by rural and urban areas. The results showed that the overall frequency of consanguinity was 30.3% in urban and 39.8% in rural areas. Total rate of consanguinity was found to be 35.4%. The equivalent mean inbreeding coefficient (α) was 0.0203 and 0.0265 in urban and rural areas, respectively. The mean proportion of consanguineous marriages ranged from 67.5% in Al Raqa province to 22.1% in Latakia province. The α-value ranged from 0.0358 to 0.0127 in these two provinces, respectively. The western and north-western provinces (including Tartous, Lattakia and Edlep) recorded lower levels of inbreeding than the central, northern and southern provinces. The overall α-value was estimated to be about 0.0236 for the studied populations. First cousin marriages (with 20.9%) were the most common type of consanguineous marriages, followed by double first cousin (with 7.8%) and second cousin marriages (with 3.3%), and beyond second cousin was the least common type.

SummaryA total of 3961 married couples from six major geographical areas representing the South Sinai governorates in Egypt were studied to assess the rate of consanguineous marriage. The population of six selected areas (St Catherines, Nuweiba, Abu Rudeis, Ras Sudr, El Tor and Abu Zenima) were subdivided into Bedouin, urban and mixed populations. A questionnaire-based interview was conducted showing that the consanguinity rate in this region is 37.5%, with the highest rate recorded in Abu Rudeis (52.3%) and lowest rate in Nuweiba (24.1%). Consanguinity was significantly higher among the Bedouin population compared with the urban population in Abu Rudeis, Ras Sudr, El Tor and Abu Zenima, while in St Catherines and Nuweiba there was no statistically significant difference. Among consanguineous couples, 5%, 60% and 35% were double first cousins, first cousins and second cousins respectively. The mean inbreeding coefficient α of the studied population was 0.01845.

SummarySeveral studies have indicated that consanguineous marriages (unions between biologically related persons) are associated with increased risk of autosomal recessive diseases and several multifactorial traits. Mandaeans are a closed ethno-religious community living in areas of southern Iraq and Iran (Khuzestan Province). There are currently no data on the prevalence of consanguineous marriages among Mandaeans. The present study was carried out in 2016 to determine the prevalence of consanguinity among Iranian Mandaeans living in Khuzestan Province, south-west Iran. A total of 137 couples (urban areas: 79 couples; rural areas: 58 couples) were included in the study. Information on the consanguineous marriages of the subjects was collected through direct interviews. Marriages were classified by the degree of relationship between couples as double first cousins, first cousins, first cousin once removed, second cousins and unrelated marriages. The coefficient of inbreeding (F) was calculated for each couple and the mean coefficient of inbreeding (α) estimated for the population, stratified by rural and urban areas. The overall frequency of consanguinity was found to be 50.7% in urban and 86.2% in rural areas. There was a significant difference between rural and urban areas in types of marriages (χ2=24.8, df=4, p<0.001) and first cousin marriages (51.8%) were the most common type. The overall α-value was estimated to be 0.0363 for the Iranian Mandaean population.

The coefficient of inbreeding (F) was calculated for each couple and the mean coefficient of inbreeding (α) estimated for each population. The proportion of consanguineous marriages in the country was 46.2%, ranging from 38.2% in Kabul province to 51.2% in Bamyan province. The equivalent mean inbreeding coefficient (α) was 0.0277, and ranged from 0.0221 to 0.0293 in these two regions. There were significant differences between provinces for frequencies of different types of marriages (p<0.001). First cousin marriages (27.8%) were the most common type of consanguineous marriages, followed by double first cousin (6.9%), second cousin (5.8%), beyond second cousin (3.9%) and first cousin once removed (1.8%). There were significant differences between ethnic groups for the types of marriages (χ2=177.6, df=25, p<0.001). Tajiks (Soni) and Turkmens (also Pashtuns) showed the lowest (α=0.0250) and highest (α=0.0297) mean inbreeding coefficients, respectively, among the ethnic groups in Afghanistan. The study shows that Afghanistan's populations, like other Islamic populations, have a high level of consanguinity.

Vowels were segmented into 15 different temporal segments taken from the middle of the vowel and ranging from 4 to 60 msecs, then presented to 6 subjects with normal hearing. The mean temporal-segment recognition threshold of 15 msecs with a range from 9.3 msecs for the /u/ to 27.2 milliseconds for the /a/. Misidenti-fication of vowels was most often confused with the vowel sound adjacent to it on the vowel-hump diagram. There was no significant difference between the cardinal and noncardinal vowels.

Left ventricular function including regional wall motion (RWM) was evaluated by 99mTc first-pass and equilibrium gated blood pool ventriculography and glycohemoglobin (HbA1c) blood levels determined by a quantitative column technique in 25 young patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus without clinical evidence of heart disease, and in healthy controls matched for age and sex. Phase analysis revealed abnormal RWM in 19 of 21 diabetic patients. The mean left ventricular global ejection fraction, the mean regional ejection fraction and the mean 1/3 filling fraction were lower and the time to peak ejection, the time to peak filling and the time to peak ejection /cardiac cycle were longer in diabetics than in controls. We found high HbA1c levels in all diabetics. There was no significant difference between patients with and without retinopathy and with and without peripheral neuropathy in terms of left ventricular function and HbA1c levels.

SummaryThe plasma tissue factor (TF) concentration was correlated to factor VII concentration (FVIIag) and factor VII activity (FVIIc) in 498 healthy volunteers ranging in age from 17 to 64 years. Immunoassays using monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) were developed for the determination of TF and FVIIag in plasma. The mAbs and the test systems were characterized. The mean value of the TF concentration was 172 ± 135 pg/ml. TF showed no age- and gender-related differences. For the total population, FVIIc, determined by a clotting test, was 110 ± 15% and the factor VIlag was 0.77 ± 0.19 μg/ml. FVII activity was significantly increased with age, whereas the concentration demonstrated no correlation to age in this population. FVII concentration is highly correlated with the activity as measured by clotting assay using rabbit thromboplastin. The ratio between FVIIc and FVIIag was not age-dependent, but demonstrated a significant difference between men and women. Between TF and FVII we could not detect a correlation.
