Experiments on the flow and acoustic properties of a moderate-Reynolds-number supersonic jet

An experimental investigation of the flow and acoustic properties of a moderate-Reynolds-number (Re = 70000), Mach number M = 2·1, axisymmetric jet has been performed. These measurements extended the experimental studies conducted previously in this laboratory to a higher-Reynolds-number regime where the flow and acoustic processes are considerably more complex. In fact, mean-flow and acoustic properties of this jet were determined to be closely comparable to published properties of high-Reynolds-number jets.The major results of the flow-field measurements demonstrate that the jet shear annulus is unstable over a broad frequency range. The initial growth rates and wavelengths of these instabilities as measured by a hot wire were found to be in reasonable agreement with linear stability theory predictions. Also, in agreement with subsonic-jet results, the potential core of the jet was found to be most responsive to excitation at frequencies near a Strouhal number of S = 0·3. The overall development of organized disturbances around S = 0·2 seems to agree in general with calculations performed using the instability theory originally developed by Morris and Tam.The acoustic near field was characterized in terms of sound-pressure level and directivity for both natural and excited (pure-tone) jets. In addition, propagation direction and azimuthal character of dominant spectral components were also measured. It was determined that the large-scale flow disturbances radiate noise in a directional pattern centred about 30° from the jet axis. The noise from these disturbances appears from simple ray tracing to be generated primarily near the region of the jet where the coherent fluctuations saturate in amplitude and begin to decay. It was also determined that the large-scale components of the near-field sound are made up predominately of axisymmetric (n = 0) and helical (n = ±1) modes. The dominant noise-generation mechanism appears to be a combination of Mach-wave generation and a process associated with the saturation and disintegration of the large-scale instability. Finally, the further development of a noise-generation model of the instability type appears to hold considerable promise.

The aerodynamic and acoustic properties of supersonic elliptic and circular jets are experimentally investigated. The jets are perfectly expanded with an exit Mach number of approximately 1.5 and are operated in the Reynolds number range of 25 000 to 50 000. The reduced Reynolds number facilitates the use of conventional hot-wire anemometry and a glow discharge excitation technique which preferentially excites the varicose or flapping modes in the jets. In order to simulate the high-velocity and low-density effects of heated jets, helium is mixed with the air jets. This allows the large-scale structures in the jet shear layer to achieve a high enough convective velocity to radiate noise through the Mach wave emission process.Experiments in the present work focus on comparisons between the cold and simulated heated jet conditions and on the beneficial aeroacoustic properties of the elliptic jet. When helium is added to the jet, the instability wave phase velocity is found to approach or exceed the ambient sound speed. The radiated noise is also louder and directed at a higher angle from the jet axis. In addition, near-field hot-wire spectra are found to match the far-field acoustic spectra only for the helium/air mixture case. These results demonstrate that there are significant differences between unheated and heated asymmetric jets in the Mach 1.5 speed range, many of which have been found previously for circular jets. The elliptic jet was also found to radiate less noise than the round jet at comparable operating conditions.

Noise generated from large-scale wave-like eddies in a Mach 0.9 hot axisymmetric jet is studied. The mean jet flow is computed using a Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes solver with the k-ω turbulence model. Spatial development of near-field pressure perturbations is computed using a 3D Parabolized Stability Equation (PSE) method, and the far-field noise radiated from these convective instabilities is obtained by solving the wave equation. The 3D PSE method developed here allows the effects of strong azimuthal mean-flow variations to be captured and analyzed. Results show that large-scale wave-like eddies, or instability waves, travel slightly above sonic speed for the first few jet diameters, and that the dominant noise sources are concentrated near the edge of the time-averaged potential core. Good agreement between computed results and experiment are found for relative sound pressure levels and directivity. Also, at the low frequencies considered, the sound field associated with azimuthal wave-number m = 0 shows better agreement with experimental data than with (the most amplified) m = 1.

AbstractPrevious work has shown that aspects of the evolution of large-scale structures, particularly in forced and transitional mixing layers and jets, can be described by linear and nonlinear stability theories. However, questions persist as to the choice of the basic (steady) flow field to perturb, and the extent to which disturbances in natural (unforced), initially turbulent jets may be modelled with the theory. For unforced jets, identification is made difficult by the lack of a phase reference that would permit a portion of the signal associated with the instability wave to be isolated from other, uncorrelated fluctuations. In this paper, we investigate the extent to which pressure and velocity fluctuations in subsonic, turbulent round jets can be described aslinearperturbations to the mean flow field. The disturbances are expanded about the experimentally measured jet mean flow field, and evolved using linear parabolized stability equations (PSE) that account, in an approximate way, for the weakly non-parallel jet mean flow field. We utilize data from an extensive microphone array that measures pressure fluctuations just outside the jet shear layer to show that, up to an unknown initial disturbance spectrum, the phase, wavelength, and amplitude envelope of convecting wavepackets agree well with PSE solutions at frequencies and azimuthal wavenumbers that can be accurately measured with the array. We next apply the proper orthogonal decomposition to near-field velocity fluctuations measured with particle image velocimetry, and show that the structure of the most energetic modes is also similar to eigenfunctions from the linear theory. Importantly, the amplitudes of the modes inferred from the velocity fluctuations are in reasonable agreement with those identified from the microphone array. The results therefore suggest that, to predict, with reasonable accuracy, the evolution of the largest-scale structures that comprise the most energetic portion of the turbulent spectrum of natural jets, nonlinear effects need only be indirectly accounted for by considering perturbations to the mean turbulent flow field, while neglecting any non-zero frequency disturbance interactions.

The ‘preferred mode’ of an incompressible axisymmetric free jet has been organized through controlled perturbation, and spatial distributions of time-average as well as phase-average flow properties in the near field are documented. The excitation produces noticeable changes in the time-average measures of the jet, although these changes are less dramatic than those for the excitation producing stable vortex pairing. For different stages in the evolution of the preferred-mode coherent structure, the phase-average vorticity, coherent Reynolds stress, and incoherent turbulence intensities and Reynolds stress have been educed through phase-locked hot-wire measurements, over the spatial extent of the structure and without invoking the Taylor hypothesis. For a particular stage of the evolution (i.e. when the structure is centred at x/D ≃ 3) the distributions of these quantities have been compared for both initially laminar and fully turbulent exit boundary layers, and for four jet Reynolds numbers. The relative merits of the coherent structure streamline and pseudo-stream-function patterns, as compared with phase-average velocity contours, for structure boundary identification have been discussed. The structure shape and size agree closely with those inferred from the average streamline pattern of the natural structure educed by Yule (1978).These data as well as τ-spectra show that even excitation at the preferred mode cannot sustain the initially organized large-scale coherent structure beyond eight diameters from the jet exit. The background turbulence is organized by the coherent motions in such a way that the maximum rate of decrease of the coherent vorticity occurs at the structure centres which are the saddle points of the background-turbulence Reynolds-stress distributions. The structure centres are also the locations of peak phase-average turbulence intensities. The evolving shape of the structure as it travels downstream helps explain the transverse variations of the wavelength and convection velocity across the mixing layer. The coherent structure characteristics are found to be independent of whether the initial boundary layer is laminar or turbulent, but depend somewhat on the jet Reynolds number. With increasing Reynolds number, the structure decreases in the streamwise length and increases in the radial width and becomes relatively more energetic, and more efficient in the production of coherent Reynolds stress.

Direct numerical simulations are used to examine the behaviour of wall-pressure fluctuations $p_{w}$ in a flat-plate turbulent boundary layer with large adverse and favourable pressure gradients, involving separation and reattachment. The Reynolds number $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}}$ based on momentum thickness is equal to 300, 600 and 900. Particular attention is given to effects of Reynolds number on root-mean-square (r.m.s.) values, frequency/power spectra and instantaneous fields. The possible scaling laws are also examined as compared with the existing direct numerical simulation and experimental data. The r.m.s. value of $p_{w}$ normalized by the local maximum Reynolds shear stress $-\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}\overline{uv}_{max}$ (Simpson et al. J. Fluid Mech. vol. 177, 1987, pp. 167–186; Na & Moin J. Fluid Mech. vol. 377, 1998b, pp. 347–373) leads to near plateau (i.e. $p_{w\,rms}/-\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}\overline{uv}_{max}=2.5\sim 3$) in the adverse pressure gradient and separated regions in which the frequency spectra exhibit good collapse at low frequencies. The magnitude of $p_{w\,rms}/-\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}\overline{uv}_{max}$ is however reduced down to 1.8 near reattachment where good collapse is also obtained with normalization by the local maximum wall-normal Reynolds stress $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}\overline{vv}_{max}$. Near reattachment, $p_{w\,rms}/-\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}\overline{vv}_{max}=1.2$ is attained unambiguously independently of the Reynolds number and pressure gradient. The present magnitude (1.2) is smaller than (1.35) obtained for step-induced separation by Ji & Wang (J. Fluid Mech. vol. 712, 2012, pp. 471–504). The reason for this difference is intrinsically associated with convective nature of a pressure-induced separation bubble near reattachment where the magnitude of $p_{w\,rms}$ depends essentially on the favourable pressure gradient. The resulting mean flow acceleration leads to delay of the r.m.s. peak after reattachment. Attention is also given to structures of $p_{w}$. It is shown that large-scale spanwise rollers of low pressure fluctuations are formed above the bubble, whilst changing to large-scale streamwise elongated structures after reattachment. These large-scale structures become more prominent with increasing $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}}$ and affect $p_{w}$ significantly.

To understand the generation mechanism of a hierarchy of multiscale vortices in a high-Reynolds-number turbulent boundary layer, we conduct direct numerical simulations and educe the hierarchy of vortices by applying a coarse-graining method to the simulated turbulent velocity field. When the Reynolds number is high enough for the premultiplied energy spectrum of the streamwise velocity component to show the second peak and for the energy spectrum to obey the$-5/3$power law, small-scale vortices, that is, vortices sufficiently smaller than the height from the wall, in the log layer are generated predominantly by the stretching in strain-rate fields at larger scales rather than by the mean-flow stretching. In such a case, the twice-larger scale contributes most to the stretching of smaller-scale vortices. This generation mechanism of small-scale vortices is similar to the one observed in fully developed turbulence in a periodic cube and consistent with the picture of the energy cascade. On the other hand, large-scale vortices, that is, vortices as large as the height, are stretched and amplified directly by the mean flow. We show quantitative evidence of these scale-dependent generation mechanisms of vortices on the basis of numerical analyses of the scale-dependent enstrophy production rate. We also demonstrate concrete examples of the generation process of the hierarchy of multiscale vortices.

In this investigation experiment was carried out in 80 mm diameter swirling pipe jet, where swirl was generated by attaching wedge-shaped helixes in the pipe. All measurements were taken at Re 5.3e4. In the plain pipe jet the potential core was found to exist up to x/D=5 but in the swirling jet there was no existence of potential core. The mean velocity profiles were found to be influenced by the presence of wedge-shaped helixes in the pipe. The velocity profiles indicated the presence of sinusoidal flow field in the radial direction existed only in the near field of the jet. This flow field died out after x/D=3 and the existence of jet flow diminished after x/D=5.

AbstractGudmundsson and Colonius (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 689, 2011, pp. 97–128) have recently shown that the average evolution of low-frequency, low-azimuthal modal large-scale structures in the near field of subsonic jets are remarkably well predicted as linear instability waves of the turbulent mean flow using parabolized stability equations. In this work, we extend this modelling technique to an isothermal and a moderately heated Mach 1.5 jet for which the mean flow fields are obtained from a high-fidelity large-eddy simulation database. The latter affords a rigourous and extensive validation of the model, which had only been pursued earlier with more limited experimental data. A filter based on proper orthogonal decomposition is applied to the data to extract the most energetic coherent components. These components display a distinct wavepacket character, and agree fairly well with the parabolized stability equations model predictions in terms of near-field pressure and flow velocity. We next apply a Kirchhoff surface acoustic propagation technique to the near-field pressure model and obtain an encouraging match for far-field noise levels in the peak aft direction. The results suggest that linear wavepackets in the turbulence are responsible for the loudest portion of the supersonic jet acoustic field.

Tonal noise generated by airfoils at low to moderate Reynolds number is relevant for applications in, for example, small-scale wind turbines, fans and unmanned aerial vehicles. Coherent and convected vortical structures scattering at the trailing edge from the pressure or suction sides of the airfoil have been identified to be responsible for such tonal noise generation. Controversy remains on the respective significance of pressure- and suction-side events, along with their interaction for tonal noise generation. The present study surveys the regimes of tonal noise generation for low to moderate chord-based Reynolds number between $\mathit{Re}_{c}=0.3\times 10^{5}$ and $2.3\times 10^{5}$ and effective angle of attack between $0^{\circ }$ and $6.3^{\circ }$ for the NACA 0012 airfoil profile. Extensive acoustic measurements with smooth surface and with transition to turbulence forced by boundary layer tripping are presented. Results show that, at non-zero angle of attack, tonal noise generation is dominated by suction-side events at low Reynolds number and by pressure-side events at high Reynolds number. At smaller angle of attack, interaction between events on the two sides becomes increasingly important. Particle image velocimetry measurements complete the information on the flow field structure in the source region around the trailing edge. The influences of both angle of attack and Reynolds number on tonal noise generation are explained by changes in the mean flow topology, namely the presence and location of reverse flow regions on the two sides. Data gathered from experimental and numerical studies in the literature are reviewed and interpreted in view of the different regimes.

Computations have been carried out in order to describe the complex unsteady flow structure over a stationary and plunging aspect-ratio-two wing under low Reynolds number conditions (Rec = 104). The flow fields are computed employing a high-fidelity implicit large-eddy simulation (ILES) approach found to be effective for moderate Reynolds number flows exhibiting mixed laminar, transitional and turbulent regions. The evolution of the flow structure and aerodynamic loading as a function of increasing angle of attack is presented. Lift and pressure fluctuations are found to be primarily dominated by the large scale circulatory pattern established above the wing due to separation from the leading edge, and by the inherent three dimensionality of the flow induced by the finite aspect ratio. The spanwise distribution of the sectional lift coefficient revealed only a minor direct contribution to the loading exherted by the tip vortex. High-frequency, small-amplitude oscillations are shown to have a significant effect on the separation process and accompanying loads suggesting potential flow control through either suitable actuation or aero-elastic tailoring.
