The allometric growth of Uca leptodactyla from two distinct subtropical estuaries on the Brazilian coast was evaluated concerning its growth pattern and size at onset of sexual maturity. Females attained maturity at similar sizes in both sites (4·1 mm of carapace length in Indaiá and 4·2 mm in Ubatumirim), while males differed slightly. They reached the size at sexual maturity of 5·3 mm of carapace length in Indaiá and 4·6 mm in Ubatumirim. Growth pattern is usually similar among crabs from distinct sites while size at sexual maturity is frequently different. However, in the case of U. leptodactyla it did not occur, probably due to the strong habitat similarity and intrinsic features of this species.

The reproductive biology of Scyllarides deceptor was studied along the southern Brazilian coast (27°S 48°W) from December 2002 to December 2003. Samples were collected monthly at Xavier Island, where animals were caught and marked. Fecundity and egg size were estimated from ovigerous females caught also in two adjacent islands, Arvoredo and Aranhas. A total of 98 females was recorded at Xavier Island during the sampling period, 24 of these were recaptured and presented time-at-liberty ranging from 14 to 297 days. Ovigerous females were observed during spring and summer, with the moulting period lasting from late winter to spring. Size at sexual maturity was assessed from 66 females caught during the breeding season and estimated in 85.33 mm of carapace length (CL). Mean fecundity of S. deceptor was estimated in 191,262 eggs (±17,811, SE) for females, on average, 94.74 mm long (±1.86 mm SE) (CL). Fecundity was significantly related to CL (R2 = 0.90) Mean egg size was 0.67 mm (±0.005 mm SE) and did not correlate significantly to CL (P = 0.78). The rocky bottom of Xavier Island was favourable for reproduction, presenting shelter and foraging grounds for the ovigerous females. For management purposes, our results suggest the closure of the S. deceptor fishery from November to January and the capture-size of females to be restricted to animals larger than 90 mm (CL).

Size at the onset of sexual maturity was determined in Munida rugosa based on allometric growth of chelipeds and abdomen, and on the proportion of ovigerous females. The variability of three different measurements of carapace length (CL) used previously for M. rugosa was also evaluated to minimize measurement error. Both sexes had symmetrical cheliped length and allometric cheliped growth over the size-range investigated, but males showed increased allometry beyond 22 mm CL. Females had greater positive allometry in abdomen width than males, but their size at maturity could not be precisely determined because sampled females were too large.

AbstractThe allometric growth of secondary sexual characters in Pachygrapsus transversus is investigated from the 2nd crab stage onward. Clear sexual dimorphism is restricted to abdominal morphology, but ANCOVA analyses showed that chelae become larger in males and the carapace becomes wider in females. Size at the puberty moult in both sexes was estimated using Somerton's computer techniques. Mature II analyses applied to bi-log gonopod length vs. carapace length relationships indicated a puberty moult at 5.0 mm in males. In females, Mature I analyses detected the overlapping growth phase lines in bi-log carapace length vs. abdomen width scatterplots. Fitting the logistic equation provided an estimate of 50% maturity at 5.5 mm. The regression lines separate young and resting individuals from the potentially reproductive females, but they do not separate young from adult crabs. Year-round monthly samples showed that the proportion of small adult-like females is higher during the breeding season. After breeding, females may moult to a young-like morphotype, as observed in controlled laboratory conditions. Moulting to a resting condition splits smaller mature females into different "growth phase" lines. Therefore, estimates of female size at sexual maturity by means of abdomen allometric growth analyses are inadequate in this species. El crecimiento alometrico de los caracteres sexuales secundarios de Pachygrapsus transversus ha sido investigado desde el segundo estadio pos-larval. El dimorfismo abdominal es la unica caracterostica que permite distinguir claramente los sexos, pero los analisis de covarianza aplicados a las regresiones obtenidas demuestran que las quelas se vuelven m as grandes en machos y que el caparazon se vuelve mas ancho en hembras. La talla en que ambos sexos alcanzan la maturidad sexual ha sido estimada atraves de las tecnicas de Somerton. La aplicacion del programa Mature II a la regresion bi-log entre el largo del caparazon y el largo del gonopodo indica que la muda de la pubertad de los machos ocurre a los 5,0 mm. En las hembras, el programa Mature I detecto la sobreposicion de loneas de regresi on en los diagramas de dispersion de la regresion bi-log entre el largo del caparazon y el ancho del abdomen. Del ajuste de la ecuacion logostica se obtiene que 50% de las hembras son sexualmente adultas a los 5,5 mm. Estas rectas de regresion separan las hembras con potencial reproductivo de los indivoduos j ovenes y aquellos en reposo sexual. Sin embargo, las rectas no separan jovenes de adultos. Muestreos mensuales a lo largo de un ano indican que la proporcion de hembras de talla puberal con morfologia adulta es mas elevada durante el peroodo reproductivo. Despues de la reproduccion, estas hembras pueden obtener en la siguiente muda una condicion morfologica semejante a la joven, como fue verificado en condiciones de laboratorio controladas. La obtencion del reposo sexual divide a las hembras de talla puberal en rectas de regresion distintas, por lo que las estimativas de talla a la maturidad sexual atraves del analisis del crecimiento alometrico del abdomen son inadequadas para esta especie.

A new sampling technique for fossil bone (coring with a 5/8″ bit) was used to sample longbones of all four sauropod genera from the Upper Jurassic Tendaguru beds of Tanzania for paleohistological study. Brachiosaurus and Barosaurus are represented by growth series of humeri and femora, while Dicraeosaurus could be sampled in fewer specimens and only one bone of Janenschia was available. Although all samples are dominated by fibrolamellar bone tissue, taxa can be distinguished by the degree and nature of bone remodeling and the presence and spacing of a peculiar kind of growth line (here termed “polish lines”). In addition, Barosaurus bone revealed two types of histology, tentatively interpreted as sexual morphs. The Tendaguru sauropods show a common growth pattern in which growth is determinate but sexual maturity is achieved well before maximum size is reached. For Brachiosaurus and Barosaurus, size at sexual maturity can be estimated and was reached at about 40% and 70% maximum size, respectively. Quantification of growth is possible in Janenschia using polish lines: the specimen studied reached sexual maturity at ≥11 years, attained maximum size at ≥26 years, and died at ≥38 years.

The present study was carried out on freshwater crab in hillstream Khoh of district Pauri Garhwal in Uttarakhand state. Samples of crab were collected from the population inhabits the hillstream Khoh on monthly basis during May 2011 to April 2012. The regression equations for the length-weight relationship in crabs were obtained as Y=2.045X+0.266 and Y=1.522X+0.392 for males and females respectively. The ANOVA test revealed significant differences in carapace length-weight relationship at p<0.05 for both the sexes. Allometric growth pattern was observed in the study for both sexes of P. koolooense. A weak relationship was observed between length and weight of the specimen.

We present the first data on age structure, growth pattern, and lines of arrested growth (LAG) forLeptodactylus latransin temperate wetlands. Based on these data, we estimate LAG periodicity, age, size at sexual maturity and longevity for this species. We also tested for differences of these parameters between sexes. The age was determined through skeletochronology. Female maturity was determined by presence of differentiated ova, while male maturity was assessed through histological analysis to evaluate spermatozoid production. To establish whether this species marks one LAG per year, eight individuals were kept one year in captivity. For each specimen, LAG was compared for different phalanges of the same toe clipped at start and end of captivity.Leptodactylus latransmarked one LAG per year, indicating a growth rhythm adjusted to a seasonal environment and mainly driven by genetic factors. Longevity was five years for both sexes and frogs reached sexual maturity during the first year, exhibiting a reproductive lifespan of four years. Sexual maturity was related to a minimal size of 60 mm or a body mass of around 33 g. There was no difference in either size or growth pattern between sexes. The von Bertalanffy growth model showed thatL. latransgrows fast after metamorphosis and their growth rate strongly decreases at about three years, probably due to the increased allocation of energy to reproduction. The high growth rates and early sexual maturation ofL. latranswould allow an elevated rate of population renewal.

The shrimp Potimirim brasiliana plays an important role in streams along the Brazilian coast as it feeds on the organic debris from the surrounding ecosystem. We determined the morphological sexual maturity of P. brasiliana by means of relative growth. Monthly throughout a year, we used sieves (2 mm mesh diameter) to collect the specimens in a coastal stream. A total of 3,521 specimens had their carapace length (CL) measured, as well as their second pleura length (PL) and the length (AML) and width (AMW) of the appendix masculina. The studied relationships were the following: CL vs. PL; CL vs. AML and CL vs. AMW, with the data adjusted to a logistic equation. All the relationships tested among the demographic groups differed statistically. The CL50 of females measured 3.45 mm, while the CL50 of males measured 2.75 mm. Two adult morphological groups were set apart for each sex. The CL vs. AMW relationship is the best at demonstrating the separation of the morphological groups for males. This fact is an intriguint issue as it suggests the presence of morphotypes in males, probably, playing different roles in the reproductive process.

Morphometry and maturity of Ucides cordatus were analyzed with males and females collected during one year on a monthly basis at Laranjeiras Bay, Paraná State, Brazil. Carapace length, chelipeds propodus length and abdominal width were measured and related to carapace width to verify sexual dimorphism and size at morphological maturity of each sex. Carapace and propodus length of larger and smaller cheliped presented difference between sexes, confirming the use of both as secondary sexual characters. MATURE II program indicated 44mm and 43mm of carapace width to represent the size at sexual maturity of males and females, respectively.

The invasive clam Venerupis aurea is native to the Mediterranean Sea. The species has now become established in Lake Qarun, Egypt. This is the first record of the establishment of this clam in the Lake. The histograms of the length-frequency distribution indicated multiple consecutive cohorts and the species is able to establish self-sustaining population. Total weight increased relatively slower than shell length in summer. Isometric growth pattern was recorded in other seasons. Negative allometric growth pattern during summer may explain spawning. The female to male ratio is 1: 0.87. Sexual maturity is attained at 11.8 mm shell length in summer and 16.6 mm shell length in winter. Histological studies revealed two different stages in both male and female clams namely, immature and developing. The results from these preliminary studies have indicated that V. aurea is able to reproduce and survive in Lake Qarun and has an important impact in the local community of the Lake.

The size at sexual maturity and the allometric growth of the semi-terrestrial crab Sesarma rectum were studied in an impacted tropical mangrove in northeast Brazil. Crabs were monthly collected during spring low-tide periods, from October 2009 through September 2010. A catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) technique was used to sample the crab population, with two-hour sampling periods, by two people. A total of 492 crabs were obtained, being 262 males and 230 females. The specimens were measured at carapace width (CW), the left and right propodus length and height (RPL, RPH, LPL and LPH), and the gonopod length of males (GL), and abdomen width (AW) of females. In males, the inflection point was at 27.14 mm CW in the relationship between CW and the length of right propodus (LRP), considering the morphological size at the onset of maturity. Based on the relationship between CW and AW, the size at sexual maturity in females was 22.97 mm. In spite of living in an impacted area, this population attained the maturity onset at a bigger size than other localities.
