AbstractLaurence Crane's music is often described as experimental or considered as a continuation of the English experimental tradition. In this first extended examination of Crane's music it is proposed that, instead of relying upon associations and aesthetic alignments, the music might be considered as experimental through a particularly experimental approach to performance. After a brief overview of Crane's output his position as a composer is considered within the context of the experimental music tradition. This tradition is then considered in relation to performance practice, both historical and contemporary. A selection of Crane's music is examined in the light of that practice, whilst aspects of the composer's approaches to tonality, instrumentation, form and notation are also highlighted.

Abstract This article presents a series of experimental music theatre performances that took place between 2015 and 2017. This art-based research investigates how qualities of the posthuman condition could manifest in experimental music theatre, by applying cybernetic and system theory principles at different levels (i.e. compositionally, aesthetically, dramaturgically) in the creative process. The aim of this article is to present these creative processes and to introduce this type of performance practice, namely cybernetic performance ecosystem.

E-pH diagrams are usually built from thermodynamic databases available in the literature or from specific software. However, depending on the conditions and the chemical species defined for elaborating a diagram, it may present completely different immunity, passivation, and corrosion domains. In order to obtain a result closer to a real system, experimental E-pH diagrams can be built from polarization curves obtained in the evaluated conditions. This work discloses the construction of a diagram for the Nb-H<sub>2</sub>O system at 25°C from theoretical study and the specific selection of chemical species in the solutions through computer simulations. The polarization curves for the construction of the experimental diagram were gathered without the use of buffer solutions and under pH monitoring in the solution bulk throughout all assays. The methodology proposed was considered adequate since, from experimental data, a final result compatible with the classic diagram for the Nb-H<sub>2</sub>O system and the excellent corrosion resistance of niobium in aqueous media were achieved.

Alvin Lucier's Music for Solo Performer (1965), often referred to as the ‘brain wave piece’, has become a key work of experimental music. Its setup, in which the brain waves of a solo performer are made to excite percussion instruments, has given the work a central place in the discourse on artistic sonification. However, only a small number of the authors making reference to the work seem to have studied the score, and even fewer have given thought to the score's implications for performance practice and aesthetic reflection. This paper pays detailed attention to these yet overlooked aspects, drawing on accounts of early performances as well as the authors’ participation in a 2012 performance led by the composer. We also trace the history of live-electronic equipment used for Music for Solo Performer and discuss the work's reception in sonification research.

Research background. Cocoa honey (CH) and cocoa pulp (CP) are both fruit pulps highly appreciated but, until now, CH is less processed than CP. In this work, it was investigated the applicability of strains of S. cerevisiae to ferment CH complemented with CP, to obtain fruit wines and improve CH commercialization. Experimental approach. The selection of a strain, previously isolated from cachaçaria distilleries in Brazil, took place based on its fermentation performance. The conditions for fermentation with S. cerevisiae L63 were then studied in relation to: volumetric proportion (φCH) of CH (complemented with CP), sucrose addition (γsuc), temperature (T) and inoculum size (No). The best conditions were applied in order to obtain fermentation profiles. Results and conclusions. S. cerevisiae L63 (No=107–108 cell/mL) is capable to ferment φCH of 90 and 80 % (V/V) for 24 or 48 h with γsuc of 50 and 100 g/L at T=28–30 °C resulting in wines with ethanol contents from 8 to 14 % (V/V). Additionally, the φCH=90 % (V/V) wine resulted in the lowest residual sugar concentration (<35 g/L) than the φCH=80 % (V/V) wine (~79 g/L) which could be classified as a sweet wine. In general, S. cerevisiae L63 resulted in a similar fermentation performance than a commercial strain tested, indicating its potential for fruit pulp fermentation. Novelty and scientific contribution. Therefore, S. cerevisiae L63 is capable to ferment CH complemented with CP to produce fruit wines with good commercial potentials that may also benefit small cocoa producers by presenting a product with greater added value.

AbstractMicrostructures and corresponding properties of compacted powders ultimately depend on the mechanical response of individual particles. In principle, computational simulations can predict the results of powder compaction processes, but the selection of appropriate models for both particle–particle interactions and particle deformations across all relevant length scales remain nontrivial tasks, especially in material systems lacking detailed mechanical property information. The work presented here addresses these issues by conducting uniaxial compressions in situ inside of a scanning electron microscope to characterize the mechanical response of individual micron-sized particles of a molecular crystal, hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20). This experimental approach enabled the collection of quantitative force and displacement data alongside simultaneous imaging to capture morphology changes. The results reveal information about elastic deformation, yield, plastic deformation, creep, and fracture phenomena. Accordingly, this work demonstrates a generalizable approach for assessing the mechanical response of individual micron-sized molecular crystal particles and utilizing those responses in particle-level models. Developing a beam trawl for sampling estuarine fish and crustaceans: assessment of a codend cover and effects of different sizes of mesh in the body and codend. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 65: 687–696. An experiment was carried out in the Clarence River (New South Wales, Australia) to test the hypotheses that fish and crustacean catches in an experimental beam trawl were affected by a codend cover and the sizes of mesh in the body and codend. The cover had no obvious effects on the catches retained in the codend. Similarly, in comparisons between trawl bodies made from 26- and 41-mm diamond-shaped mesh, there were no differences in the assemblages of fish caught, or in the mean numbers entering the codends. For one species of fish (Acanthopagrus australis), however, there were differences in the proportions caught between the trawl bodies across different size classes. There was also some evidence to suggest that mesh size in the body of the trawl influenced the size selection of school prawns (Metapenaeus macleayi). For most finfish, there were no differences in catches between codends made from 20-mm and from 29-mm mesh hung on the bar (i.e. square-shaped mesh). In contrast, mesh size in the codend was important for the size selectivity of school prawns, with smaller carapace lengths at 50% retention in the 20-mm codend. We conclude that use of a 41-mm mesh in the body and a 20-mm square mesh in the codend of the beam trawl would be appropriate for future sampling with this gear in estuaries of New South Wales. A similar experimental approach to ours is needed in adapting the beam trawl to estuaries in other parts of the world, or in developing other types of research trawl.
