The Arabs in Central Asia occupied in the past, as is well known, considerable territory, especially in the lower parts of the basins of the Zarafshān and Qashqa-daryā rivers, and also in Khojend and the south-eastern regions of Tajikistan.In the course of centuries the majority of the Central Asian Arabs have lost their language and only small groups of them continue to speak Arabic up to the present time in the villages of Jōgarḹ, Čardaḹ (Ġijduwān district) and ‘Arab-Xōna (Wobkend district) of the Bukhārā region and in the village of Jeinau in the Qashqa-daryā region.

This paper examines U.S. engagement in Central Asia over the past two decades, with specific reference to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. While alarmist voices occasionally warn of the threat to American interests from China and Russia through the SCO, the organization’s influence appears limited. Washington has engaged it only sporadically, preferring to conduct relations bilaterally with the Central Asian states.

Although the known record of Mesozoic eutherian mammals has been significantly enriched in recent years, early eutherian evolution is still not well understood. Among the more controversial of Mesozoic eutherians is Paranyctoides Fox, which was described in 1979 from the Judithian Dinosaur Park Formation, Alberta, Canada. It is a rare taxon and therefore has been identified in only a few other North American Late Cretaceous local faunas since. Within the past decade, dental and gnathic remains discovered in Central Asia have also been referred to Paranyctoides, thereby expanding the geographic range of the genus substantially and making it the only Late Cretaceous eutherian ostensibly occurring in both continents. As a result of our detailed study of Paranyctoides, however, we find that the Central Asian species lack the diagnostic characters of Paranyctoides and must be referred to other taxa. We conclude that this genus was limited to North America, ranging from Aquilan to Lancian time, and accordingly we recognize as valid only the following species: Paranyctoides sternbergi (Judithian, Alberta), P. maleficus (Aquilan, Alberta), Paranyctoides Wahweap sp. A and sp. B (Judithian, Utah), Paranyctoides Kaiparowits sp. A and sp. B (Judithian, Utah). Another purported species of Paranyctoides, P. megakeros, from the Lancian of Wyoming, is a junior synonym of Alostera saskatchewanensis.

Abstract. The fire history of the Tibetan Plateau over centennial to millennial timescales is still unknown. Recent ice core studies reconstruct fire history over the past few decades but do not extend through the Holocene. Lacustrine sedimentary cores, however, provide continuous records of large-scale and local environmental modifications due to their accumulation of specific organic molecular markers throughout the past millennia. In order to reconstruct Holocene fire events and vegetation changes occurring on the south-eastern Tibetan Plateau and the surrounding areas, we improved and integrated previous analytical methods. The multi-proxy procedure was applied to samples retrieved from Paru Co, a small lake located in the Nyainqentanglha Mountains (29°47'45.6" N; 92°21'07.2" E; 4845 m a.s.l.). The investigated biomarkers include n-alkanes as indicators of vegetation, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as combustion proxies, faecal sterols and stanols (FeSts) as indicators of the presence of humans or grazing animals and finally monosaccharide anhydrides (MAs) as specific markers of vegetation burning processes. Relatively high concentrations of both MAs and PAHs demonstrate intense local biomass burning activity during the early Holocene (10.9–10.7 cal ky BP), which correspond to a drier climate following deglaciation. High concentrations of MAs but not PAHs between 10.7–9 cal ky BP suggest a period of regional biomass burning followed by a decreasing fire trend through the mid-late Holocene. This fire history is consistent with local vegetation changes reconstructed from both n-alkanes and regional pollen records, where vegetation types depend on the centennial-scale intensity of monsoon precipitation. FeSts were below detection limits for most of the samples, suggesting limited direct human influences on fire regime and vegetation changes in the lake's catchment. Climate is the main influence on fire activity recorded in Paru Co over millennial timescales, where biomass burning fluctuates in response to alternating warm/humid and cool/dry periods.

The article deals with the phonetic features of the northern Ukrainian subdialect of the village of Dubovichi, Krolevets District, Sumy Region. Before that, Serhiy Ivanovich Doroshenko described the dialectal features of Buryn and Putivl districts in a decent manner.The Ukrainian population from the territories of modern Sumy region and some neighboring ones actively participated in the settling of the present Belgorod and Voronezh regions of the Russian Federation, which is confirmed by both actual speaking characteristics and anthroponymy, the facts of which were also recorded by the author. The author tried to make a more complete, more objective picture of the natural speech of Sumy region, in particular the phonetic (vocal) of his subsystem, and to correlate some dialects of this territory with that or another language (northern or southeast). The author focuses on the peculiarities of the vocal subsystem in detail such as akanye, vowels of heterogeneous creation, positional phonemes, and comments on facts and compares them with the corresponding phenomena of neighboring subdialects described by the famous dialectologist S. I. Doroshenko. A. A. Sagarovsky records signs of the development of the subsystem consist-ing in leveling, losing the «exotic» northern dialect traits and considers the subdialect as a transition to the south-eastern (Slobodan) type.

Asplenium adulterinum Milde is one of the rarest and most threatened representatives of the Aspleniaceae family in the Carpathians. Botanical literature mentioned the ladder spleenwort in many localities in South-Eastern Carpathians in the past, but during the last decades the species has not been collected and deposited in public herbaria by any botanist. All existing herbarium material in Romanian herbaria (including Asplenium trichomanes and A. trichomanes-ramosum) was revised and all available information from botanical literature was critically compiled in order to clarify the distribution of Asplenium adulterinum in the South-Eastern Carpathians. After almost 80 years since the first mention of the species in the Carpathians, this paper reports the recent identification of Asplenium adulterinum in three new locations in South-Eastern Carpathians (Ţesna Valley, Vânturătoarea Waterfall and Şugăului Gorges).

Global temperature datasets indicate a warming trend in the south-eastern Indian Ocean of ~0.02°C year–1. This is supported by in situ temperature measurements at a coastal monitoring station on the Western Australian continental shelf that have shown a mean temperature rise of 0.013°C year–1 since 1951, corresponding to ~0.6°C over the past 5 decades. Measurements from three other shallow stations between 1985 and 2004 indicated warming trends of 0.026–0.034°C year–1. It is suggested that enhanced air–sea heat flux into the south-eastern Indian Ocean may be a key factor in the rising temperature trend. There has also been a steady rise in salinity over the past half-century. At interannual scales, coherent temperature variability at the various stations indicates that larger-scale processes are influencing the shelf waters and are linked with El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-related events in coastal sea level and hence the Leeuwin Current.

It is very difficult to translate fully the above verse from the great Persian-speaking poet Bidil without violating its spirit in the context of the Central Asian (and other Iranian areas) culture. The spirit of the verse is not so much fatalism about life itself but is one of cynicism derived from power-lessness over one's fate. This verse is often uttered by the Central Asian intellectuals in response to questions about their relationship with the Russians and sharing of power in the Soviet bureaucracy. It does not communicate resignation. It describes the reality of the USSR, an awareness that a Central Asian is powerless to change circumstances to those favoring his/her well being and spiritual instincts. It camouflages the underlying resentment toward the dominant group, the Russians, who have the monopoly of the means of violence and who have not hesitated to use these means against the Muslim population of Central Asia on numerous occasions during the past hundred years of their rule there.

China, Russia and the Central Asian states of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan formed the Shanghai Co-operation Organization (SCO) in 2001. China's backing for an SCO charter, permanent secretariat and anti-terrorism centre for the past three years reflects its desire to strengthen the SCO in countering United States influence in Central Asia. Diplomatically, China fears that the American presence means that regional states will be less accommodating to China's political demands. Economically, China worries that the United States' support for American petroleum companies will compromise Chinese efforts to wrest concessions from Central Asian governments. Security-wise, with bases close to China's western borders, Washington can assist Beijing in flushing out Xinjiang separatists operating in Central Asia, or put military pressure on China, should it be perceived as a threat. The American presence and resurgent Russian involvement in Central Asia seem to have put China's influence in the region on the defensive.

<p>The 'Aralkum' desert (the former Aral Sea) in Central Asia is a comparatively new desert that has formed over the past several decades due to water mismanagement associated with the inflowing Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers, and is now a known source of dust aerosol in the region. It is known that recently dry lakebeds can be efficient dust sources, due to the availability of readily erodible alluvial sediments. As a dry lakebed with a new area of over 60,000 km<sup>2</sup> exposed to aeolian wind erosion the Aralkum has become a significant driver of dust storms in the region. Other such lakebed dust sources in the Central Asian region include the Sistan Basin on the border between Afghanistan and Iran, and Lake Urmia in Iran. However due to a paucity of measurement sites it is difficult to quantify the behaviour and consequences of dust activity in the region.</p><p>Using the dust transport model COSMO-MUSCAT we simulate dust emissions over the course of one year from these relatively new dust sources, exploring the resultant dust emission and transport patterns, quantifying the radiative effects of this dust, and assessing the viability of measuring such dust using remote sensing techniques. Making use of the Global Surface Water dataset (produced by the Copernicus Programme) in order to define the surface water coverage in various epochs, we make estimates of dust emissions for the Central Asian and Middle Eastern region under three scenarios: 1) the 'Past', representative of water coverage in the 1980s; 2) the 'Present', representative of water coverage in the 2010s; and 3) the 'Aralkum' scenario, representing only dust emissions from the present-era Aralkum. In the Present scenario we estimate that the Aralkum area (here considered as 43-47°N, 58-62°E) emitted 28 Tg of dust over the course of a year from March 2015 to March 2016, out of 272 Tg produced by the wider Middle Eastern and Central Asian region. However ~66% of these Aralkum emissions occurred when the cloud cover was > 95%, raising questions as to the extent to which dust storm activity from the Aralkum is measurable. Modelling is therefore a particularly useful tool, complementary to remote sensing measurements, to understand dust activity in a region characterised by dramatic human-induced changes to the natural environment.</p>
