Abstract The low availability of pollinators in high-elevation ecosystems can lead to flowering plants showing different adaptive responses in order to assure their reproductive success. Shifts toward autogamy and asexual reproductive rates (the reproductive assurance hypothesis) and the compensatory measures to maintain outcrossing such as flower longevity and more prolonged pistil receptivity (the increased pollination probability hypothesis) are some of these responses. Several studies have tested both hypotheses, but investigations of plants of tropical alpine environments such as paramos that support these assumptions are still scarce. Puya nitida, an endemic Colombian plant species distributed in the paramo and subparamo in the Eastern Cordillera of Cundinamarca department, was used as a case study to test its reproductive characteristics that assure its sexual reproduction. We analysed the species’ floral morphology and development, its phenological patterns and its plant mating-system. We found that Puya nitida showed floral characteristics that promote pollination by birds, herkogamy and dichogamy, flowers and receptive stigmas with 9 and 12 days of longevity, respectively and an index of self-incompatibility that shows that it is mostly self-incompatible. We found a synchronic phenological pattern with an annual frequency and an intermediate duration with a peak in the period of lowest rainfall. Our results suggested that longer floral development, prolonged stigma receptivity, herkogamy and dichogamy and self-incompatibility might assure reproductive success, since the cross-pollination might be favoured when few pollinators are in attendance. Overall, these reproductive mechanisms add evidence to the increased pollination probability hypothesis, specifically for a plant species of a tropical high-elevation ecosystem where pollinators are scarce.

Wildfire can drastically affect plant sexual reproductive success in plant–pollinator systems. We assessed plant reproductive success of wind, generalist and specialist pollinated plant species along paired unburned, burned-edge and burned-interior locations of large wildfires in the Mojave Desert. Flower production of wind and generalist pollinated plants was greater in burned landscapes than adjacent unburned areas, whereas specialist species responses were more neutral. Fruit production of generalist species was greater in burned landscapes than in unburned areas, whereas fruit production of wind- and specialist-pollinated species showed no difference in burned and unburned landscapes. Plants surviving in wildfire-disturbed landscapes did not show evidence of pollination failure, as measured by fruit set and seed:ovule ratios. Generalist- and specialist-plant species established in the interior of burned landscapes showed no difference in fruit production than plants established on burned edges suggesting that pollination services are conserved with increasing distance from fire boundaries in burned desert landscapes. Stimulation of plant reproduction in burned environments due to competition release may contribute to the maintenance of pollinator services and re-establishment of the native plant community in post-fire desert environments.

Accelerating the introduction of a new technological package is needed to increase the productivity of high elevation puddled rice in Humbang Hasundutan. The objectives of the study are to find out the perception of the existence of technological packages and farmers' preference for a new technological package. The study used a survey method with primary data gathered using questionnaires. The criteria of locations and respondents were used to obtain relevant respondents and data concerning their knowledge of high elevation puddled rice cultivation.  The collected data were processed by using Importance Performance Analysis in order to find out the level of Importance and Satisfaction of the indicators and the valued aspects in the technological package components. The results of the study showed that the socio-economic aspects had to be heeded in organizing the technological package. Indicators having a high level of importance and a low level of satisfaction consisted of production cost, quality of seeds, farmer groups empowerment, technology information institution, capital cost, agricultural tools and machines, pest control, sales price, irrigation canals, and farm roads. On the other hand, introducing new superior seeds, productivity attribute and planting age were important indicators for local farmers as to improve the quality of existing seeds. Farmers group expected that the technological package had a high level of productivity, better access to input, low cost, and good user-friendliness in its application.

In the context of depleting indigenous knowledge and their values in the Kisan Community, they seem unaware of their culturally rich traditional practices of using animals and plants for medicinal purpose. It has been essential to document those knowledge of practices for future references. The paper tried to explore and document those knowledge and practices by the Kisan community of Mechinagar 9 and 11 of Jhapa, Nepal. For this purpose, the data were collected through interviews with key informants including conjurer (Dhami/Jhakri), elders of the society and also focal group discussions with the local people. Analysis of the data has shown that 29 animal species belonging to 24 families are used to treat 29 ailments and 57 plant species belonging to 37 families are used for treating 39 different ailments. The commonly treated ailments were common cold, cuts, wounds, diarrhoea, dysentery, etc.

Descritores: Cuidados Paliativos; Neoplasias; Saúde do adolescente; Processos de Enfermagem.ABSTRACTObjective: to operationalize the Nursing process for adolescents in palliative care, based on the Roy Adaptation Model, using NANDA, Nursing Outcomes Classification and Nursing Interventions Classification. Method: a qualitative study, in which the case study, was adopted, as a methodological strategy, carried out with two adolescents and families, through home visits. As a theoretical reference, the Callista Roy Adaptation Model was used. Results: it was observed that the care to the adolescents and their families favored the adaptation, since the young showed a significant improvement in front of the stimuli; the identified socioeconomic conditions interfered with the well-being of the female family and adolescent, and consequently, the generated impact was perceived. However, one should propose interventions as guidelines on the management of the presented symptoms and sessions of music therapy, contributing to the improvement in the environment reduction of anxiety. Conclusion: the interventions implemented were important for the substitution of ineffective responses by adaptive responses. CRISPR/Cas9 is a valuable tool for both basic and applied research that has been widely applied to different plant species. In this chapter, we reviewed the application of CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing toolkit in Brassica crops. We also provided a case study in Brassica napus. Collectively, our results demonstrate that CRISPR/Cas9 is an efficient tool for creating targeted genome modifications at multiple loci in B. napus. These findings open many doors for biotechnological applications in oilseed crops.
