SummaryThe Authors report on the steps involved in the computerization (coding of data, card punching and tape recording) of a Twin Register initiated in 1942 and currently approaching 11,000 cases of multiple births. The Register is permanent in that it involves continued updating of information and addition of new cases. It includes twins of any age, sex, zygosity and health condition. The experience gained in the reported project can be usefully shared in wiew of international cooperation and standardization.

The Stazione Zoologica at Naples has had a long and distinguished career since its opening in February 1874. The Stazione came into being through the inspiration and drive of Anton Dohrn, a man remarkable for the originality of his ideas and for the tenacity with which he strove to secure their fruition. Anton Dohrn was a German : he built the Stazione Zoologica in Italy with funds provided by himself and by men and organizations of many nationalities; the Stazione was international in origin. After its foundation, the Stazione was in part supported by funds derived from its show-piece, the aquarium, and in part from the now famous ‘table’ system, whereby many countries rented working-space and facilities for scientific research within its walls. That the international character of the Stazione Zoologica has been preserved intact despite two world wars, is a tribute to the principles on which it was founded. Few, if any, scientific laboratories have so striking an international flavour; and this is the more remarkable when one considers the major historical trends during the years subsequent to the Stazione’s foundation. An active ‘ neutral ’ diplomacy throughout these years has successfully, though sometimes precariously, avoided the pitfalls of unilateral allegiance. In times of peace, an international organism requires to be assiduously tended in order that it may thrive: in times of war, it needs to be fiercely and stubbornly protected so that it may survive. Zoologists the world over may well feel content that their common heritage has been not merely preserved, but also that it flourishes as strongly as though it were some new-born offspring of post-war international cooperation.

In 1959, twelve countries with a strong record of interest in Antarctica signed a Treaty allowing accessibility to all signatories wishing to conduct peaceful scientific research. The Antarctic Treaty established science and international cooperation as its cornerstones but raised controversies because of its hosting of sovereignty claims over Antarctic territory. This research aims to fill a gap in literature proposing a strict periodization of the Antarctic Treaty System under a systemic perspective. The paper also examines Brazil's accession into the Treaty. Using as indicators of legitimacy the increase in membership and the transparency of decision-making processes, the author argues that the Antarctic Treaty System has become recognized as a legitimate international regime.

“Global Ocean Science Report: The Current Status of Ocean Science around the World” published in 2017 by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO was a first consolidated assessment of the ocean science and was intended to show the current status of the science in question. One of the important points of the report was a statement that sharing infrastructure and development of new technologies will reduce the cost of field expeditions and stimulate the scientific potential of the countries participating in international cooperation. The article studies the possibility of sharing marine technologies associated with marine research activities. It considers the possibility of application of some of the Criteria and Guidelines of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO) when sharing the marine technology in the field of ecological and oceanographic research based on the provisions of international conventions, resolutions, documents of the United Nations General Assembly and IOC-UNESCO. Special attention is drawn to UN General Assembly Resolution “Oceans and the law of the sea" which mentions the issue of marine technology transfer. The article studies the definition of the term “marine technology” in the context of the IOC's Criteria and Guidelines on the transfer of marine technology. It determines that the term “marine technology” covers a wide range of subjects including information and data, manuals, guidelines, criteria, standards, reference materials, observation facilities and equipment, computers and computer software, expertise, know-how and analytical methods related to marine scientific research and observation. The article also presents the results of the scientific and practical seminar "International Cooperation in the Field of Marine Scientific Research – an Important Factor in the Development of Black Sea Regional Projects of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO and European Union" which took place in Kyiv on October 19, 2017.

The article draws attention to a number of research initiatives in the area of liturgical plainchant, which have brought together scholars of different countries and disciplines. The number of primary sources is so great that cooperation is essential. In the first phase of modern scientific research, monks of the Benedictine Abbey of Solesmes played a crucial role, their combined efforts being rivalled by very few individual scholars. In the last quarter of a century, databases and computerized projects have been developed to which scholars from different countries can contribute and from which they can draw information, and these have to some extent replaced earlier communal efforts. When the seemingly uniform facade of plainchant is inspected closely it resolves itself into a multitude of overlapping traditions and styles: how many and how widespread they are can only be determined through international cooperation. Later stylistic phases, especially from the eleventh century onward, are influenced by a preoccupation with music as an aural reflection of the harmony of the universe.
