Neuropsychological aspects of neuropsychiatric diseases that are common in old age or that present problems for diagnosis and treatment especially in the old patient represent the objective of this book. There are several good reasons for addressing this topic. Disorders of brain function become more frequent in old age and neuropsychology thus gains importance in geriatric medical evaluation and in distinguishing the many dimensions of neuropsychological deviations from “normal senescence.” Research in this area has recently intensified and valuable insights have accumulated; however, few books on this topic are currently available. The Handbook of Neuropsychology and Aging focuses on neuropsychological aspects; specifically, on geriatric psychiatry and neurology. Here, the editor has attempted to bring together outstanding researchers to cover the entire field of geriatric neuropsychiatry.

During recent years interest in transcultural psychiatry, particularly Anglo-American differences in diagnostic practice and treatment, has increased considerably. In 1965 Willis and Bannister reported the results of a questionnaire study of the opinion of 'senior’ British psychiatrists on the diagnosis and treatment of schizophrenia. Acknowledging the many disadvantages of a postal enquiry of this kind, the present author thought that their study would form the basis for a useful and relatively inexpensive Anglo-American comparison. Consequently, in 1968 an almost identical questionnaire was circulated to six hundred 'senior’ American psychiatrists.

The history of clinical neuropsychology and development of the profession into its present form depended on several lines of inquiry about human behavior, illness, and brain function. Clinical neuropsychology required apparatus to measure cognitive functions, group research to objectively measure and catalogue those functions across the normative spectrum, more sophisticated neurodiagnostic nosology, and an approach that integrated behavioral, psychological, medical, and statistical expertise. Many scientists and practitioners since the late 1880s participated and contributed to this endeavor. This chapter describes how several “forgotten” and better-remembered founders of neuropsychology were able to advance the development of this profession, and how their contributions fit into the ongoing science that became clinical neuropsychology.

Old woman in ascant bikini or “fear of Baba Yaga” in Dubravka Ugrešić’s: Life is a fairy taleThe subject of the dissertation is ageing, physical passing and social rejection seen from woman’s perspective. The grotesque-ironic Life is afairy tale by Dubravka Ugrešić, along with the „Baba-Yagism philosophy” and the construction of „Baba-Yagology”, touches the problems related to old age as asocial taboo and double exclusion due to being both awoman and an old person. The work by Ugrešić deals with the phenomenon defined as ageism R. Butler which corresponds to the idea of power M. Foucault, discrimination and stereotypical attitude to the social roles defined accordingly to the biological age of an individual. Among the many works of Dubravka Ugrešić — Croatian author known mainly for antipolitical texts describing the search for identity in Post-Yugoslav emigration — Life is a fairy tale belongs to the group of texts exposing feminine topics, with particular focus on somaesthetical perspective where sex and age, next to race, class or region, are the criteria for social ladder of power participation.

Beside his speeches and poems, Gregory of Nasiansus left 245 letters. Over 160 of them were written in the last decade of his life, when after two years of his work as a bishop in Constantinople he returned to the country where he grew up. An object of analysis in this article are his texts related to ageing, which was often described by him in his letters. Gregory was aware of his old age and ensuing consequences such as sickness, the need for silence, the awareness of approaching death and requests for prayer sent to addressees. A number of passages taken from these letters reveal one of the many aspects of Gregory’s silhouette. In majority of essays describing his person and output he is shown as an eminent theologian, a rhetorician, a bishop, and even a mystic, who contributed greatly to the development of the theology of that epoch. My article presents Gregory as a man of „flesh and blood”, in his suffering and sickness very close to all subject to vicissitudes of life. Writing about himself as an elderly man, he became a brother of all ageing. The readers of his correspondence, both his addressees living in the fourth century and contemporary readers, may find a particular consolation in the experiences of the one recognized as a saint.
