ABSTRACTChemical models of dense interstellar clouds are reviewed with particular emphasis on recent results. The need for theoretical and experimental data on rate coefficients is pointed out and some observational studies are suggested.

Abstract. The first-order perturbation approximation is applied to calculate the rate coefficients of vibrational energy transfer in collisions involving vibrationally excited molecules in the absence of non-adiabatic transitions. The factors of molecular attraction, oscillator frequency change, anharmonicity, 3-dimensionality and quasiclassical motion have been taken into account in the approximation. The analytical expressions presented have been normalized on experimental data of VT-relaxation times in N2 and O2 to obtain the steric factors and the extent of repulsive exchange potentials in collisions N2-N2 and O2-O2. The approach was applied to calculate the rate coefficients of vibrational-vibrational energy transfer in the collisions N2-N2, O2-O2 and N2-O2. It is shown that there is good agreement between our calculations and experimental data for all cases of energy transfer considered.Key words. Abstract Background The secondary use of electronic health records (EHRs) promises to facilitate medical research. We reviewed general data requirements in observational studies and analyzed the feasibility of conducting observational studies with structured EHR data, in particular diagnosis and procedure codes. Methods After reviewing published observational studies from the University Hospital of Erlangen for general data requirements, we identified three different study populations for the feasibility analysis with eligibility criteria from three exemplary observational studies. For each study population, we evaluated the availability of relevant patient characteristics in our EHR, including outcome and exposure variables. To assess data quality, we computed distributions of relevant patient characteristics from the available structured EHR data and compared them to those of the original studies. We implemented computed phenotypes for patient characteristics where necessary. In random samples, we evaluated how well structured patient characteristics agreed with a gold standard from manually interpreted free texts. We categorized our findings using the four data quality dimensions “completeness”, “correctness”, “currency” and “granularity”. Results Reviewing general data requirements, we found that some investigators supplement routine data with questionnaires, interviews and follow-up examinations. We included 847 subjects in the feasibility analysis (Study 1 n = 411, Study 2 n = 423, Study 3 n = 13). All eligibility criteria from two studies were available in structured data, while one study required computed phenotypes in eligibility criteria. In one study, we found that all necessary patient characteristics were documented at least once in either structured or unstructured data. In another study, all exposure and outcome variables were available in structured data, while in the other one unstructured data had to be consulted. The comparison of patient characteristics distributions, as computed from structured data, with those from the original study yielded similar distributions as well as indications of underreporting. We observed violations in all four data quality dimensions. Conclusions While we found relevant patient characteristics available in structured EHR data, data quality problems may entail that it remains a case-by-case decision whether diagnosis and procedure codes are sufficient to underpin observational studies. Free-text data or subsequently supplementary study data may be important to complement a comprehensive patient history.

Experimental data in animals, but also observational studies in obese patients, suggest that the composition of the gut microbiota differs in obese v. lean individuals, in diabetic v. non-diabetic patients or in patients presenting other diseases associated with obesity or nutritional dysbalance, such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. In the present review, we will describe how changes in the gut microbiota composition and/or activity by dietary fibres with prebiotic properties, can modulate host gene expression and metabolism. We will evaluate their potential relevance in the management of obesity and related metabolic disturbances, in view of the experimental data and intervention studies published up to date.

Evolutionary chemical models are ultimately unavoidable for a full understanding of interstellar clouds. They include not only the chemical processes but also the dynamical processes by which the modeled object came to be the way it is. From an evolutionary perspective, dark cores may be ephemeral objects and dynamical equilibrium an exception rather than norm. Evolutionary models have numerous advantages over “classical” fixed condition equilibrium models. They have the potential to provide more elegant explanations for the observed inter-cloud and intra-cloud chemical differences. The problem of the depletion of gas phase molecules by condensation onto the grain may also be less serious in evolutionary models. Hence, these models should be actively developed.

The current status of laboratory measurements of the rate coefficients for ionic reactions involved in interstellar molecular synthesis is discussed and the experimental techniques used to acquire such data are briefly described. Examples are given of laboratory data which are being obtained at temperatures close to those of interstellar clouds. Particular attention is given to the results of recent theoretical and experimental work which show that the rate coefficients for the binary reactions of ions with polar molecules at low temperatures are much larger than previously assumed. It is shown how these new developments in experiment and theory are reconciling the differences between predicted and observed abundances for some interstellar molecules. Also briefly discussed are: - the phenomenon of isotope exchange in ion/neutral reactions which explains the apparent enrichment of heavy isotopes in some interstellar molecules, the role of atoms in molecular synthesis, some studies of ion/neutral reactions pertaining to shocked regions of interstellar clouds, ternary association reactions and the analogous radiative association reactions, and recent new laboratory measurements of dissociative recombination coefficients. Finally, some guidance is offered in the proper choice of critical kinetic data for use in interstellar chemical modelling and some further requirements and likely future developments are mentioned.

A program for matching experimental data to the com puted concentrations of various components of a dynamic chemical process is implemented. The digital subsection of the computer is programmed to execute a steepest descent search procedure. The analog section is programmed to solve the chemical rate equations which simulate the re action dynamics. These equations form a two-point bound ary value problem. The search procedure changes param eters in the rate equations, and it compares the computed concentrations to the experimental ones. The squared error is summed over all data points, and this sum is minimized by the search. Significant speedup of the solution to this type of problem is possible with the hy brid system due to the fast solution of the differential equations on the analog and the automated search pro cedure on the digital.
