In this paper, an ultra-wideband (UWB) planar monopole antenna with impedance bandwidth from 2.83 to 11.56 GHz and dual band-notched characteristics is presented. The antenna consists of a small rectangular ground plane, a bat-shaped radiating patch, anda 50-Ω microstrip line. The notched bands are realized by introducing two different types of structures. The half-wavelength spiral-slots are etched on the radiating patch to obtain a notched band in 5.15 5.925 GHz for WLAN, HIPERLAN, and DSRC systems. Based on the single band-notched UWB antenna, the second notched band is realized by etching a folded stepped impedance resonator as defected ground structure on the ground plane for WiMAX and C-band communication systems. The notched frequencies can be adjusted by altering the length of resonant cells. Surface current distributions and equivalent circuit are used to illustrate the notched mechanism. The performance of this antenna both by simulation and by experiment indicates that the proposed antenna is suitable and a good candidate for UWB applications.

This paper presented the design and implementation of a 60 GHz single element monopole antenna as well as a two-element array made of two 60 GHz monopole antennas. The proposed antenna array was used for 5G applications with radiation characteristics that conformed to the requirements of wireless communication systems. The proposed single element was designed and optimized to work at 60 GHz with a bandwidth of 6.6 GHz (57.2–63.8 GHz) and a maximum gain of 11.6 dB. The design was optimized by double T-shaped structures that were added in the rectangular slots, as well as two external stubs in order to achieve a highly directed radiation pattern. Moreover, ring and circular slots were made in the partial ground plane at an optimized distance as a defected ground structure (DGS) to improve the impedance bandwidth in the desired band. The two-element array was fed by a feed network, thus improving both the impedance bandwidth and gain. The single element and array were fabricated, and the measured and simulated results mimicked each other in both return loss and antenna gain.

AbstractA compact ultra-wideband (UWB) monopole antenna with reconfigurable band-notch characteristics is demonstrated in this paper. It is comprised of a modified rectangular patch and a defected ground plane. The band-notch property in the WiMAX and WLAN bands is achieved by etching an open-ended slot on the radiating patch and an inverted U-shaped slot on the ground plane, respectively. To obtain the reconfigurable band-notch performance, two PIN diodes are inserted in the slots, and then the notch-band can be switched by changing the states of the PIN diodes. The antenna has a compact size of 0.47 λ1 × 0.27 λ1. The simulated and measured results indicate that the antenna can operate at a UWB mode, two single band-notch modes, and a dual band-notch mode. Moreover, stable radiation patterns are obtained.

A small dual-band monopole antenna with coplanar waveguide (CPW) feeding structure is presented in this paper. The antenna is composed of a meandered monopole, an extended conductor tail, and an asymmetrical ground plane. Tuning geometrical structure of the ground plane excites an additional resonant frequency band and thus enhances the impedance bandwidth of the meandered monopole antenna. Unlike the conventional monopole antenna, the new resonant mode is excited by a slot trace of the CPW transmission line. The radiation performance of the slot mode is as similar as that of the monopole. The parametrical effect of the size of the one-side ground plane on impedance matching condition has been derived by the simulation. The measured impedance bandwidths, which are defined by the reflection coefficient of −6 dB, are 186 MHz (863–1049 MHz, 19.4%) at the lower resonant band and 1320 MHz (1490–2810 MHz, 61.3%) at the upper band. From the results of the reflection coefficients of the proposed monopole antenna, the operated bandwidths of the commercial wireless communication systems, such as GSM 900, DCS, IMT-2000, UMTS, WLAN, LTE 2300, and LTE 2500, are covered for uses.

A new compact ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with triband-notched characteristics is presented. The structure of the proposed antenna is simple and symmetric. A modified ground is introduced to obtain a wide impedance bandwidth of 2.9–13.4 GHz withS11<-10 dB. By inserting two arc-shaped slots in the radiation patch, two sharp bands of 3.3–3.7 GHz and 5.15–5.35 GHz are notched. The notch band of 7.25–7.75 GHz is achieved by etching a U-shaped slot in the ground plane. The notched bands can be controlled, respectively, while the characteristics of the proposed UWB antenna almost keep completely unchanged at the unnotched frequencies. Equivalent circuit models, surface current distributions, and input impedance are applied to analyze the principle of the proposed UWB antenna. Parametric studies are given. Simulated and measured results show that the proposed antenna has good impedance matching, stable radiation patterns, and constant gain.

Abstract This article presents a structure of coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed star-shaped monopole antenna (SSMA) with a pair of quarter-circular-slit (QCS) and partly-hexagonal-ring-slit (PHRS) defected ground structure. By inserting a pair of QCS and PHRS on the rectangular ground plane, an excellent impedance bandwidth is achieved i.e., 139 % (from 2.2--12.21 GHz). The dimension of the SSMA is about 0.286λ l ×0.216λ l mm 2 , where λ l is the wavelength in free space at the lowest operating frequency i.e, 2.2 GHz. The transmission line model (TLM) of the SSMA is presented and it shows the antenna behavior based on the effect of each element. It is observed that the characteristics of the TLM model are close to the simulation result using the CST simulator. From the results, it is observed that the proposed ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna close to omnidirectional radiation patterns and suitable for UWB Applications.

AbstractA microstrip line-fed monopole antenna is proposed for super wideband (SWB) applications printed on an epoxy-resin-reinforced woven-glass material. The reported SWB antenna has been made of a rectangular partial ground plane with an L-type slit and a heart-shaped radiating patch. This antenna is connected precisely by a tapered feed line that provides SWB greater than ultra-wideband. The heart-shaped radiating patch and the partial ground plane containing a gap and an L-type slit on ground plane also play paramount roles to procure wide impedance bandwidth. It is determined from measurements that this antenna contains SWB characteristic [voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) ≤2] spanning from 1.30 to 40 GHz (187.41%), with a bandwidth dimension ratio (BDR) of 5544.66 and a ratio bandwidth of 30.77:1. Simple construction, sharp surface current flow, much impedance bandwidth, nearly omnidirectional radiation patterns, stable peak gain (2.20–6.06 dBi), time domain performance, and considerable BDR (5544.66) make it a promising candidate for SWB applications.

This research article describes a technique for realizing wideband dual notched functionality in an ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna array based on metamaterial and electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) techniques. For comparison purposes, a reference antenna array was initially designed comprising hexagonal patches that are interconnected to each other. The array was fabricated on standard FR-4 substrate with thickness of 0.8 mm. The reference antenna exhibited an average gain of 1.5 dBi across 5.25–10.1 GHz. To improve the array’s impedance bandwidth for application in UWB systems metamaterial (MTM) characteristics were applied it. This involved embedding hexagonal slots in patch and shorting the patch to the ground-plane with metallic via. This essentially transformed the antenna to a composite right/left-handed structure that behaved like series left-handed capacitance and shunt left-handed inductance. The proposed MTM antenna array now operated over a much wider frequency range (2–12 GHz) with average gain of 5 dBi. Notched band functionality was incorporated in the proposed array to eliminate unwanted interference signals from other wireless communications systems that coexist inside the UWB spectrum. This was achieved by introducing electromagnetic bandgap in the array by etching circular slots on the ground-plane that are aligned underneath each patch and interconnecting microstrip-line in the array. The proposed techniques had no effect on the dimensions of the antenna array (20 mm × 20 mm × 0.87 mm). The results presented confirm dual-band rejection at the wireless local area network (WLAN) band (5.15–5.825 GHz) and X-band satellite downlink communication band (7.10–7.76 GHz). Compared to other dual notched band designs previously published the footprint of the proposed technique is smaller and its rejection notches completely cover the bandwidth of interfering signals.

This paper presents a novel, compact Ultra Wide Band , Asymmetric Ring Rectangular Dielectric Resonator Antenna (ARRDRA), which is a unique combination of Thin Dielectric Resonator (DR), Fork shape patch and defective ground structure. The base of the proposed antenna is its Hybrid structure, which generates fundamental TM, TE and higher order modes that yields an impedance bandwidth of 119%. Proposed antenna provides a frequency range from 4.2 to 16.6 GHz with a stable radiation pattern and low cross polarization levels. Peak gain of 5.5 dB and average efficiency of 90% is obtained by the design. Antenna is elongated on a FR4 substrate of dimension 20 x 24x 2.168 mm3 and is particularly suitable for C band INSAT, Radio Altimeter, WLAN, Wi-Fi for high frequencies. Ease in fabrication due to simplicity, compactness, stable radiation pattern throughout the entire bandwidth are the key features of the presented design. Inclusion of Defective ground structure and asymmetric ring not only increases the bandwidth but also stabilize the gain and efficiency due to less surface current. Presented design launch an Ultra Wide Band antenna with sufficient band rejection at 4.48-5.34 and 5.64-8.33 GHz with stable radiation pattern and high gain.

Interference between ultrawideband (UWB) antennas and other narrowband communication systems has spurred growth in designing UWB antennas with notch characteristics and complicated designs consisting of irregular etched slots and larger physical size. This article presents a simplified notched design method for existing UWB antennas exhibiting four frequency-band-rejecting characteristics. The investigation has been conducted by introducing four semicircular U-shaped slot structures based on a theoretical formulation. The formulation is validated with the equivalent LC lumped parameters responsible for yielding the notched frequency. A novel feature of our approach is that the frequency notch can be adjusted to the desired values by changing the radial length based on the value calculated using a derived formula for each semietched U-slot, which is very simple in structure and design. Additionally, by introducing the rectangular notch at the ground plane, the upper passband spectrum is suppressed while maintaining the wide impedance bandwidth of the antenna applicable for next-generation wireless communications, 5G. The measured result shows that the antenna has a wide impedance bandwidth of 149% from 2.9 to 20 GHz, apart from the four-notched frequencies at 3.49, 3.92, 4.57, and 5.23 GHz for a voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) of <2 rejecting the Worldwide Interoperability for microwave Access (WiMAX) band at (3.38-3.7 GHz), the European C-band at (3.84-4.29 GHz), the Indian national satellite (INSAT) at (4.47-4.92 GHz), and wireless local area networks (WLANs) at (5.09-5.99 GHz). Measured and simulated experimental results reveal that the antenna exhibits nearly an omnidirectional pattern in the passband, low gain at the stopband, and good radiation efficiency within a frequency range. The LC equivalent notched frequency has been proposed by analyzing the L and C equivalent formula, and it has been validated with simulated and measured results. The measurement and simulated results correspond well at the LC equivalent notch band rejecting the existing narrowband systems.

In the present work, a novel multistrip monopole antenna fed by a cross-shaped stripline comprising one vertical and two horizontal strips has been proposed for wireless local area network (WLAN)/Industrial, Scientific, and Medical band (ISM)/International Mobile Telecommunication (IMT)/BLUETOOTH/Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) applications. The designed antenna has a small overall size of 20 × 30 mm2. The goal of this paper is to use defected ground structure (DGS) in the proposed antenna design to achieve dual-band operation with appreciable impedance bandwidth at the two operating modes satisfying several communication standards simultaneously. The antenna was simulated using Computer Simulation Technology Microwave Studio (CST MWS) V9 based on the finite integration technique (FIT) with perfect boundary approximation. Finally, the proposed antenna was fabricated and some performance parameters were measured to validate against simulation results. The design procedure, parametric analysis, simulation results along with measurements for this multistrip monopole antenna using DGS operating simultaneously at WLAN (2.4/5.8 GHz), IMT (2.35 GHz), BLUETOOTH (2.45 GHz), and WiMAX (5.5 GHz) are presented.
