AbstractIn this paper, a sandwiched type frequency selective surface (FSS) is designed and analyzed. The design procedure and operating principle is given based on the equivalent circuit model. The proposed FSS includes two identical layers of periodic metallic arrays, which are separated by a foam layer. In each layer of the periodic array, the unit cell is composed of a gridded-triple square loop structure. The FSS provides three pass-bands, in which a flat band response is presented. Three bands are separated by one or two transmission zeros, which leads to a sharp rejection on both sides of each pass-band. The central frequencies of the three pass-bands are 7.0, 10.9 and 14.0 GHz. To verify the simulated results, a prototype of the FSS is fabricated and measured. The simulated results agree well with the measured ones. This work can be used in area of a radar stealth or satellite communication system.

We present a third-order bandpass three-dimensional frequency selective surface (3D FSS) with multiple transmission zeros in this paper. The unit cell of the proposed 3D FSS consists of an air-filled square waveguide and a cuboid dielectric block with three concentric metallic square loops. Due to its inner electromagnetic coupling in the unit cell, this FSS provides a flat passband with three transmission poles, a wide out-of-band rejection with three transmission zeros, and high frequency selectivity. In order to explain the working principle, an equivalent circuit model is established and investigated. Finally, an FSS prototype is fabricated and measured, and the results exhibit good stability for both TE and TM polarizations under incident angles from 0° to 50°. Besides, this FSS has a relatively compact unit cell.

A single layer novel compact frequency selective surface which is used in reflector antenna is designed and simulated. The proposed unit cell reflects electromagnetic waves in K and Ka band with maximum reflection occurring at 22.62 GHz and 35.44 GHz respectively. The designed FSS find its application in satellite communication. A crossed dipole structure in center and two-legged structure in corners with square loop in each quadrant makes the FSS unit cell structure. The FSS is designed with oblique incidence for transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarization with return loss 0.3 dB in 22.62 GHz and less than 0.5 dB in 35.44 GHz. The proposed work shows frequency independence against oblique angle of incidence. The simulated result from CST microwave studio is compared with other similar works.

An elliptic band pass response three-dimensional Frequency Selective Surface (3D FSS) is designed from a single unit cell of 2D array of two shielded microstrip lines. The designed FSS provides pseudo-elliptic band-pass frequency response (5.4 – 9.6) GHz with its application in long-distance radio telecommunications and space communications etc. The four transmission zeros at 5.4GHz, 9.6GHz, 12.4GHz and 15GHz provides wide out-of-band frequency rejection. The 3D FSS is independent of the variations in the incident angle of the plane wave up to 60 degree. Each unit cell is a combination of two shielded microstrip lines with one having an air gap and the other one having in between rectangular metallic plate. When a TE polarized plane wave incidents perpendicular to the perfect electric conductor (PEC) boundary walls shielded microstrip lines, it results in two quasi-TEM modes namely air and substrate mode. The 3D FSS consists of multiple resonators with a multimode cavity having number of propagating modes. These resonating modes in phase provide transmission poles and when out of phase give transmission zeros. The 3D FSS structure is simulated using Ansys HFSS software with improved performance over 2DFSS, for many practical applications such as antenna sub-reflector, radomes and spatial filters.

This communication presents a single flower shaped resonator frequency selective surface (FSS) unit cell with stable oblique angles of incidence for both horizontal and vertical polarizations. The proposed FSS structure which can impede the frequencies from 3GHz to 6GHz at 3dB insertion loss is presented. The proposed FSS comprise an improved decagon to form a flower-shaped structure that exhibits single narrow stop band characteristics. The flower shaped FSS acts like a band-stop filter with center frequency of 4.8 GHz and notch band frequency ranging from 4.2GHz to 5.3GHz at 10dB insertion loss and 320MHz bandwidth at 20dB insertion loss. The designed FSS can use for shielding of public safety WLAN frequency. We present the equivalent circuit model and the surface current distribution to illustrate the resonance characteristics of the miniaturized FSS. To validate the design and simulation results, the proposed FSS is fabricated and tested in a semi-anechoic chamber

A compact frequency selective surface (FSS) for 5G applications has been designed based on 2.5-dimensional Jerusalem cross. The proposed element consists of two main parts: the successive segments of the metal traces placed alternately on the two surfaces of the substrate and the vertical vias connecting traces. Compared with previous published two-dimensional miniaturized elements, the transmission curves indicate a significant size reduction (1/26 wavelengths at the resonant frequency) and exhibit good angular and polarization stabilities. Furthermore, a general equivalent circuit model is established to provide direct physical insight into the operating principle of this FSS. A prototype of the proposed FSS has been fabricated and measured, and the results validate this design.
