On the Demonstration of Formulæ connected with Interest and Annuities

In most branches of mathematics, the actual use of fundamental processes in the form which the first definitions suggest, is often supplanted, either by processes of greater skill, or by the use of pure reasoning. In the subject of which this paper treats, there has not been much attempt to connect formulæ by reasoning. The actual exhibition of successive annual results has been the only method extensively employed; and it throws the required total result into a series of terms: this series is either algebraically summed, or calculated term by term for insertion in a table. The present paper is intended to show that this summation of algebraical series may be dispensed with, at least in questions of annuities certain : and also that common points of principle, which the ordinary methods leave altogether out of sight, will reduce many questions of life annuities to an absolute coincidence of form with the corresponding questions of ordinary annuities.

There are various measures currently in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19; however, in some cases, these can have an adverse effect on the acoustic environment in buildings. For example, transparent acrylic partitions are often used in eating establishments, meeting rooms, offices, etc., to prevent droplet infection. However, acrylic partitions are acoustically reflective; therefore, reflected sounds may cause acoustic problems such as difficulties in conversation or the leakage of conversation. In this study, we performed a prototyping of transparent acrylic partitions to which a microperforated panel (MPP) was applied for sound absorption while maintaining transparency. The proposed partition is a triple-leaf acrylic partition with a single acrylic sheet without holes between two MPP sheets, as including a hole-free panel is important to a possible droplet penetration. The sound absorption characteristics were investigated by measuring the sound absorption in a reverberation room. As the original prototype showed sound absorption characteristics with a gentle peak and low values due to the openings on the periphery, it was modified by closing the openings of the top and sides. The sound absorption performance was improved to some extent when the top and sides were closed, although there remains the possibility of further improvement. This time, only the sound absorption characteristics were examined in the prototype experiments. The effects during actual use will be the subject of future study.

Sedation is an option for controlling fear and anxiety related to a visit to the dentist. The goal of this study was to capture, by means of a questionnaire, the perceptions of twenty dentists, twenty dental students and twenty lay people concerning the use of sedatives in a dental environment. The responses were evaluated using the quantitative-interpretative method. Dentists: 75% had knowledge of sedatives in a dental setting, but their actual use was mentioned by only three. As far as the use of sedatives by dentists is concerned, one considered it "risky" and 19 were favorable. Two affirmed that sedation does not present risks. Eighteen said they would be able to react to a medical emergency. Dental students: 60% said they were aware of the topic, in theory. Nineteen expressed interest in the topic. Fifteen claimed there were risks associated with the technique. Twelve (60%) have the theoretical knowledge to deal with a medical emergency in the dental office. Lay public: Seven (35%) responded that they felt some discomfort during dental treatment, because of fear (n=6) and equipment noise (n=2). Five said they would go to the dentist more often if there was a way to reduce the discomfort. Half of those interviewed indicated that they knew what sedation was. Sixteen favored using it for dental treatment. Seven thought that there were no risks when sedation is carried out. It was concluded that few participants in any of the three categories felt confident about the topic, though they demonstrated interest. The population in general felt optimistic, while practicing dentists and dental students complained of a lack of exposure to the subject at dental school.

The charge which forms the subject of this paper is blazoned in French ombre and in Latin umbra, and one or other of these terms is used in the few cases in which the charge occurs in English blazon outside the text-books. There can be little doubt but that the word ought to be interpreted as ghost or phantom, but the compiler of The Boke of St. Albans translated it by shadow, and he was followed by Gerard Legh and sundry later writers who apparently took that word in its everyday sense. It was certainly so understood by Cornelius Gailliard, for he paraphrased it by umbrage, and I suspect that it was a like misinterpretation which inspired the de Varennes-Vulson heresy mentioned hereinafter. In the following pages I propose first to review the statements of the various English and continental armorists who mention the ombre and thereafter to consider the charge in actual use.

In offering to the Royal Society the ensuing Supplement to my two former papers on the Law of Mortality, with subsequent remarks on invalidism, I am anxious to acknowledge that I have derived great advantage from the encouragement and persuasion of my esteemed brother-in-law, Sir Moses Montefiore, Bart., given me to endeavour to compile and publish some of my later observations on the subject; knowing that, though I felt flattered by the attention originally shown by scientific gentlemen to these papers, they appeared to me capable of advantageous illustrations. Therefore I may venture to hope that if this Supplement merit the attention of those interested in this branch of science, I may consider that he has added a mite further to entitle him to the good wishes of those who applaud him for his constant endeavours to promote the general interest of mankind—endeavours which he has shown to extend through Europe and Asia in the cause of humanity, and to be exercised at home in various ways, among which I notice his attention to the practice of Life, Fire, and Marine Assurance; he being the President of the Alliance British and Foreign Life and Fire Assurance Company; of which I was the founding Actuary, and in which Institution, though retired from it, I feel greatly interested; it having been established about the year 1824 by the late N. M. de Rothschild, Esq., the late John Irving, Esq., the late Samuel Gurney, Esq., and Francis Baring, Esq., and himself conjointly with other gentlemen, and he being also President of the Alliance Marine Assurance Society, founded at the same time by them with him. Art. 1. In the year 1820 the Royal Society did me the honour to publish in their Transactions a paper of mine on the Analysis and Notation applicable to the valuation of Life Contingencies, in which I introduced a new and general notation, which appealed to me far more extensively useful, and more explanatory of its object, than any other notation I had met with; and in that paper I think I introduced a new manner of dealing with the subject, by offering an analysis, with examples of the extensive use of it, applicable to some of the most intricate questions which had up to that period met with anything like a proper solution; and showed, by selections from the treatise of Life Annuities of my late learned and much-respected friend, Francis Baily, Esq., a mode of solution of all the problems in chapter 8 of that work, depending on a particular order of survivorship; problems previously considered many years before, and presented by my late friend William Morgan, Esq., of the Equitable Society, to the Royal Society, and published in their valuable Transactions; and which had been since considered, in a learned work on Life Annuities, by my late respected friend Joshua Milne, Esq., with some ingenious notation with respect to those contingencies. But still, the solutions given to many of the problems, though there were but three lives concerned, were of such an intricate practical form, as to be in my opinion perfectly useless; especially on considering that it was necessary to obtain, by Tables of single and joint lives, by necessary interpolations, the required data; as the differences to be used for the interpolations, in consequence of the great irregularity of the numbers of those Tables, are so irregular as to throw great doubt on the necessary accuracy of the results. And I think the examples I gave of my method could leave no doubt as to the comparative simplicity which resulted from it, and consequently comparative utility of my analysis; an analysis which applies where there are more than three lives concerned, and, in fact, where there are any number of lives to be considered. And I may refer the reader to my solutions in that tract, to enable him to make the comparison.

It takes a book like Barbara Freyer Stowasser's Women in theQur'an, Traditions and Interpretation to help extricate the compleximages of Muslim women from the gross overgeneralization characteristicof popular western media. Truly understanding that complexityrequires a look at all of the components that make up the Islamic worldview, from its primary sources ideologically to its cultural history as ithas affected the lives of Muslims. Such a look has been offered inStowasser's book.I was very excited by the cross-referential methodology proposed bythe author in her introduction and her actual use of it throughout the text. She moves among Qur'anic passages, earlier tafasir, hadith traditions, aswell as among contenders in modem Islamic discourse: modernists, traditionalists, and fundamentalists (pp. 5-7). As a result, the reader viewsdifferent responses to ideas about specific women from the Qur'anic textwhile knowing precisely the source of certain ideas. This is not the usual diatribe that confuses indiscriminately fact withmythology, intellectual tradition with popular culture, and results in misinformingthe already ill-informed reader. Moreover, Stowasser avoidsthe other popular extreme: diminishing everything to a single factor, suchas gross misogyny, for example. Although she distinguishes between thevarious strains that make up a complex picture, she does not merelyregurgitate the historical legacy but rather offers critical analysis anddemonstrates her capability in deciphering the various components in theinternal Islamic debates as well.Perhaps the complexity of the cross-referential methodology limits thebreadth of the subject matter. We can understand how complex notions ofthe place of Muslim women in society have resulted from these variousreferences, even though we get no hint at what that place is from this work. The characters analyzed are limited to the specific female characters givenindividual attention in the Qur'anic text and to the wives of the Prophet. These models of virtue and .struggle, failure and frustration, can and have ...

Introduction: the development of the latest information and telecommunication technologies used in the civil law sphere transforms the understanding and application of tort liability for damage caused by a source of increased danger. The identified mechanism requires a scientific analysis to determine the essential changes in the institution of a source of increased danger. The implementation of activities related to the sources of increased danger implies the presence of a threat of harm to the subjects of law. To ensure the greatest protection of subjects, digital technologies are used. The purpose of the study: to determine the characteristics of the concept “owner of a source of increased danger”, to consider the impact of digital technologies on the institution of a source of increased danger. Methods: general method; general scientific method (logical (induction, deduction, analysis, synthesis), system); private law (formal legal, comparative legal). Results: the content of the concept “owner of the source of increased danger”is revealed. The problem of lack of transparency of information about the owner of the vehicle, its causes and consequences is raised. Considered the actual use of digital technologies today in this area and proposed ways to develop the protection of subjects of law from the possibility of illegal actions. Conclusions: the characteristics of the basic concept of “owner of a source of increased danger” are defined, the influence of digital technologies on the institution of a source of increased danger is considered. It is revealed that the identification of the concepts “owner of the source of increased danger” and “owner of the property” can lead to a mixture of proprietary relations and non-contractual obligations, requiring their specific legal regulation. The analysis of the new electronic title is carried out, as well as the further prospects of its development are revealed. The approximate list of data necessary for safety of the subject which enters the legal relationship connected with use by the vehicle is specified.

The Institute has always placed the question of the provision of suitable text-books both in the vernacular and in the language of the European power in the different territories in the forefront of its subjects of study as being one of the most urgent needs in Africa to-day. Numerous discussions and inquiries have shown that adequate instruction in hygiene and the inculcation of simple health rules is one of the most pressing needs, and that work done in one area is often unknown in others. In consequence the Executive Council in 1929 devoted special attention to the question of what action could be taken which would assist in the solution of this problem. The general opinion was that the information at the disposal of the Institute showed the need of a survey of books in actual use. This would, it was hoped, provide material which would be useful in the preparation of model texts in which particular attention would be devoted to the method of presenting the subject to Africans. The Council decided that the survey should be divided into two parts, one of books published in English or in a vernacular used in British territories and another of books published in French or languages used in French-speaking areas, and that the information collected should form the basis of articles to be published in Africa.

This study looks at pre-service teachers, their usage of experiments in the classroom, and the factors that influence their behavior. In a longitudinal panel-study of high school/grammar school-level biology and chemistry pre-service teachers at all training colleges in the German State of Rhineland-Palatinate, we examine the role of attitudes, perceived behavioral controls, and subjective norms on the participants’ intention to- and actual use of experiments in the classroom. As a theoretical framework, we use the Theory of Planned Behavior. Attitudes, social norms, behavioural control and behavioural intention were measured at time points t1 and t2; behaviour with regards to experiments was measured at t3. In a second step, we examine which fundamental beliefs influence attitudes, social norms and behavioural control. The analyses show that attitudes, subjective norms and behavioural controls play important roles in determining the use of experiments. While for pre-service teachers with the subject biology attitudes play the most important role, for those with the subject chemistry it is behavioural control that most strongly influences the use experiments. The reform of teachers’ education programs in Germany has no significant effects on the intent or actual behaviour regarding experiments.
