Development and Psychometric Evaluation of a Revised Sense of Coherence Scale

Abstract. The present study introduces a revised Sense of Coherence (SOC) scale, a new conceptualization and operationalization of the resilience indicator SOC. It outlines the scale development and aims for testing its reliability, factor structure, and validity. Literature on Antonovsky’s SOC (SOC-A) was critically reviewed to identify needs for improving the scale. The scale was investigated in two samples. Sample 1 consisted of 334 bereaved participants, Sample 2 of 157 healthy controls. The revised SOC Scale, SOC-A, and theoretically relevant questionnaires were applied. Explorative and confirmatory factor analyses established a three-factor structure in both samples. The revised SOC Scale showed significant but discriminative associations with related constructs, including self-efficacy, posttraumatic growth, and neuroticism. The revised measure was significantly associated with psychological health indicators, including persistent grief, depression, and anxiety, but not to the extent as the previous SOC-A. Stability over time was sufficient. The study provides psychometric support for the revised SOC conceptualization and scale. It has several advantages over the previous SOC-A scale (unique variance, distinct factor structure, stability). The scale could be used for clinical and health psychological testing or research into the growing field of studies on resilience over the life span.

This study validated the Chinese version of the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction (C–QTI) with two samples ( ns = 370 and 369) of primary school students in Hong Kong. The 48-item measure had acceptable internal consistency reliability, but the reliability coefficients of four of the scales were too low. The findings supported the validity of the circumplex model underlying the instrument and verified the ability of the measure to differentiate between students' perceptions in different classes. With the refinement of the measure based on reliability analysis and Principal Components Analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis was conducted on the 35-item instrument to test its hypothesized factor structure. Findings on model fit indices were mixed, lending some support to the eight-factor structure of the questionnaire.

Summary Multisample confirmatory factor analyses were carried out in samples of Italian university and high school students in order to assess the replicability of the factor structure in the Italian version of the Aggression Questionnaire by Buss and Perry. Item-level multiple-group component analysis confirmed Buss and Perry's 4-factor structure of the Aggression Questionnaire items in both samples. The results of multisample maximum likelihood confirmatory factor analysis of scale scores supported the hypothesis of single aggression latent dimension underlying the four Aggression Questionnaire scales, the structure of which was invariant across the two samples.

The nexus between language and experience addresses the distinct, qualitative aspects of human experience or qualia. These qualitative aspects are important because, when people perceive a disconnect between language and experience, consequences for psychological health may follow. The research reported herein aimed to develop and validate a psychometric tool to assess perceptions of connection between language and experience. Six studies were conducted to confirm the factor structure of the Beliefs About the Functions of Language scale and to assess its construct validity. Two factors were derived and validated (viz. epistemic and communicative), which were shown to relate to mental health indicators in expected ways.

Objective: Although the All Aspects of Health Literacy Scale (AAHLS) is a commonly used measure of health literacy, the psychometric evaluation approach employed in its original validation is questionable. In this study, we evaluated the psychometric properties and factor structure of the AAHLS using widely-accepted analytic methods. Methods: We collected data from 393 students from a Mid-Atlantic university. Participants completed the AAHLS in an online format. We conducted an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to determine whether a different factor/subscale structure emerged in this sample than in the original validation sample. We ran follow-up confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs). Results: The EFA suggested an 11-item, 4-factor model. The CFA of the 4-factor model had adequate model fit but evidenced several low item loadings, suggesting that several items did not perform well. We tested a modified 8-item, 3-factor model that had good fit and high item loadings. Compared to the original factor structure, the functional health literacy subscale was removed. Conclusions: The newly proposed 3-factor/subscale model with 8 items captures communicative health literacy and 2 separate aspects of critical health literacy. Further replication in other diverse samples is warranted to investigate the psychometric properties of the AAHLS, although we recommend use of the revised version over the original.

Abstract The aim of this study is to adapt the multidimensional in-group identification scale (MGIS) to the Brazilian context by gathering evidence of its psychometric properties. A total of 663 people from two samples participated in the study. In sample 1, we measured the identification of Brazilians with the region of the country where they live. In sample 2, we measured the identification of students with the university which they attend. Confirmatory factor analyses were performed on both samples to compare the models previously proposed by the original authors of the measure. The obtained results confirmed the validity of the hierarchical and multidimensional factor structure proposed by the original authors. The scale proposed here can be used to measure multiple dimensions of in-group identification in Brazil.

"The last decades have witnessed a significant increase in several forms of human psychological malfunctioning, aspects that proved to significantly endanger healthy and efficient human adaptation. Mental health indicators (anxiety, depression, reduced levels of happiness), perfectionism, narcissism, and loneliness have significantly increased, despite the significant improvement of existent life-conditions. The market-based competition and reward system in the educational and professional spheres, as well as the perfectionistic expectations specific to the personal life impose high demands on the individual, which usually become sources of significant chronic stress, further impacting the individual’s quality of life (psychological and subjective well-being, loneliness). The comparative investigation of the above-mentioned variables in Transylvanian Hungarian and Transylvanian Romanian students would offer us the chance to compare these levels of functioning in two, culturally different samples. Our present study is a continuation and refinement of previous studies, and concentrates on the following major aims: (i) the investigation of the possible differences in narcissism, perfectionism, loneliness, depression, happiness, subjective and psychological well-being in Transylvanian Hungarian and Transylva¬nian Romanian first and second year students; (ii) the investigation of the association patterns between variables in both samples, and (iii) the examination of the role the studied variables play on the major indicators of mental and psychological health (depression and happiness) both in the united sample and on the two samples of students separately. AbstractThe Gratitude Questionnaire is a short, self-report measure of the disposition to experience gratitude. The Gratitude Questionnaire has been validated in several countries but its factor structure remains controversial. Therefore, the main goal of the study was to examine the factor structure of the Gratitude Questionnaire in a Spanish sample. Two samples were recruited (957 and 920 participants). The confirmatory factor analyses showed that the best fit was the five-item model with errors of item four and five correlated (CFI = .99, NFI = .99, RMSEA = .02). This model demonstrated partial cross-validity based on an analysis of factorial invariance. The Composite Reliability of the five-item Gratitude Questionnaire was .81. In addition, it was found that gratitude was positively related to subjective and psychological well-being. Specifically, the Gratitude Questionnaire was positively correlated to life satisfaction (r= .56,p< .01), affect balance (r= .46,p< .01), self-acceptance (r= .54,p< .01), positive relations (r= .44,p< .01), autonomy (r= .17,p< .01), environmental mastery (r= .49,p< .01), personal growth (r= .36,p< .01), and purpose in life (r= .50,p< .01). According to the results, it can be concluded that the Spanish version of the five-item Gratitude Questionnaire possessed better psychometric properties than the original six-item model.

Abstract. The alexithymia construct is commonly measured with the 20-Item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), with more than 20 different language translations. Despite replication of the factor structure, however, it cannot be assumed that observed differences in mean TAS-20 scores can be interpreted similarly across different languages and cultural groups. It is necessary to also demonstrate measurement invariance (MI) for language. The aim of this study was to evaluate MI of the English and French versions of the TAS-20 using data from 17,866 Canadian military recruits; 71% spoke English and 29% spoke French as their first language. We used confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) to establish a baseline model of the TAS-20, and four increasingly restrictive multigroup CFA analyses to evaluate configural, metric, scalar, and residual error levels of MI. The best fitting factor structure in both samples was an oblique 3-factor model with an additional method factor comprised of negatively-keyed items. MI was achieved at all four levels of invariance. There were only small differences in mean scores across the two samples. Results support MI of English and French versions of the TAS-20, allowing meaningful comparisons of findings from investigations in Canadian French-speaking and English-speaking groups.

AbstractThe teaching personal-social responsibility (TPSR) model is a well-established approach for developing positive social behaviors. However, today's research community has diagnosed the need to gather greater empirical evidence regarding the consistency of the evaluation tool in measuring personal-social responsibility levels. Thus, this study was geared towards testing the validity and reliability of a two factor model of the Personal and Social Responsibility Questionnaire (PSRQ) among athletes. A questionnaire was administered to 517 athletes, distributed into two representative samples of different competitive levels, sports and regions. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to examine the PSRQ's factor structure. The scale showed good psychometric properties and the factor structure was stable in the two samples, providing evidence of cross validity. Implications and research directions of these results are discussed.

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the Norwegian version of the work-related sense of coherence scale, which measures the perceived comprehensibility, manageability, and meaningfulness of an individual’s current work situation. Methods: Factorial validity, convergent and discriminant validity of the factors, as well as scale reliability were tested with confirmatory factor analyses among two samples of employees in higher education institutions ( N = 6951) and nursing homes ( N = 558). Factorial invariance across occupational groups was also investigated. Results: A modified three-factor structure was shown to be valid and reliable in both samples and invariant across occupational groups. However, problems were detected regarding the discriminant validity between the factors comprehensibility and manageability. Conclusions: The Norwegian version of the work-related sense of coherence scale seems to have good properties. Further development is needed to better distinguish between the comprehensibility and manageability dimensions.
