Background: Subjective memory impairment (SMI) is associated with negative health outcomes including mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. However, ethnic differences in SMI and disparities in risk factors associated with SMI among minority populations are understudied. The study examined the ethnic differences in SMI, whether SMI was associated with depressive symptoms, sleep, and physical activity (PA), and whether the associations vary across racial/ethnic groups. Methods: Participants included 243 African and Asian Americans (including Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean Americans) aged 50 or older. Demographic information, SMI, depressive symptoms, daily sleeping hours, and PA levels were assessed. Results: Vietnamese Americans reported the highest SMI score. Depressive symptoms, sleeping hours, and PA levels were significantly associated with SMI. Depressive symptoms were the only significant factor across all ethnic groups. Significant interaction effects were found between ethnicity and health behaviors in predicting SMI. In particular, Vietnamese American participants with greater depressive symptoms and physical inactivity were significantly more likely to experience SMI compared to other ethnic groups Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate ethnic differences in SMI and its association with depressive symptoms, sleep, and PA, which highlight the importance of considering the unique cultural and historical backgrounds across different racial/ethnic groups when examining cognitive functioning in elderly.

In multi-ethnic societies, one way in which ethnicity manifests itself is in classifying people according to their ethnic origin. Such classification is based on stereotyping and is typically achieved by emphasizing certain common characteristics rather than individual particularities. Both lived experience and folklore corroborate the fact that ethnic stereotypes, ethnic self-awareness, and identity are also influenced by historical circumstances. This article focuses on Lithuanians’ and Latvians’ attitudes towards Poles and Germans, and towards one another during the period between the eighteenth and the first half of the twentieth centuries. The aim of this article is to reveal how the folklore of the two neighbouring nations, Lithuanians and Latvians, depicts the aforementioned ethnic groups; what historical events, cultural and social factors determined the similarities and differences in their portrayal in Lithuanian and Latvian folklore.

Background/Context The United States is currently undergoing a period of unprecedented immigration, with the majority of new arrivals coming from Asia and Latin America, not Europe. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (APIs) represent the fastest growing racial group in the United States, and schools are again being asked to socialize newcomer students, many of whom are APIs. Yet, even as the United States becomes more racially diverse, the national mindset regarding immigrants and immigration ranges from ambivalent to increasingly (and currently) hostile, and is often contradictory. “American” typically is imagined as “White,” and perceptions of APIs and people of color as “other” remain cemented in our collective psyche. It is this sociohistorical-political context that frames the education and socialization of Asian American citizens, immigrants, and their children. Objective/Focus As APIs are absorbed into the fabric of society, how will they define themselves? How will they be defined? This article begins by deconstructing the social category Asian and Pacific Islander in order to reveal the immense diversity contained under this label. The discussion illuminates both the horizontal diversity of APIs—differences between ethnic groups, and vertical diversity—differences within ethnic groups, to underscore the insufficiency of the API label. Against the diverse backdrop that APIs truly (re)present, (Asian) American education framed by three curricular contexts in the United States—the major reforms of the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act, culturally relevant pedagogy, and the “model minority” mythology—is theorized using postcolonial theory as an analytic lens. The article concludes with thoughts on how APIs can resist domination and what might be sites of resistance in schools or society. Research Design This is an analytic essay that examines both historical and contemporary educational and policy contexts. Conclusions/Recommendations Curriculum, defined not simply as subject matter content and instructional procedures, but as a tool of acculturation and a depository of (U.S.) national and cultural values, has the power to emancipate or colonize. Each of the three curricular contexts in the United States—the major reforms of the No Child Left Behind Act, culturally relevant pedagogy, and the “model minority” mythology—exemplify the role Curriculum plays in defining, silencing, and/or marginalizing APIs. Imagined sites of resistance against Curriculum as colonizer include this very page, where one voice deliberately pushes back against the obfuscation of fixed realities layered onto people of Asian descent in the United States, the reexamination and revision(ing) of teacher preparation curricula, and the larger policy arena.

This chapter examines some examples from the ritual text corpora written in “Classical Mongolian” and in Oirat “Clear Script,” dedicated to the veneration of the Mongolian nature deity, the White Old Man. The deity’s mythology, iconography, and the variety of ritual genres connected to him have been extensively studied. However, the rich textual corpus, especially the newly discovered Oirat incense offering texts and the various aspects of the White Old Man’s contemporary popularity among all Mongolian ethnic groups, evokes the revision of the deity’s ethos. Being a primordial nature spirit of highest importance became integrated later into the Buddhist pantheon and returned as syncretic deity into the folk religious practice. The chapter examines the similarities and differences between the Classical Mongolian and Oirat offering text versions and provides a glimpse into the newly invented religious practices dedicated to the deity.

Asian Americans develop health complications at lower BMIs than other racial/ethnic groups. Given increasing overweight and obesity rates nationwide, growing numbers of Asian American men, and limited research on overweight and obesity in this population, understanding overweight and obesity differences across Asian subgroups of men is crucial to advancing health equity. This study examined overweight and obesity prevalence both among ethnic subgroups of Asian American men and compared to non-Hispanic White (NHW) men. Prevalence ratios were derived from 2002 to 2015 National Health Interview Survey data to determine associations between race/ethnicity and (a) overweight, and (b) obesity, across ( n = 221,376) racial/ethnic groups of men (Chinese; Filipino; Asian Indian; Other Asian; NHW). Overweight and obesity for all Asian subgroups were defined using Asian-specific BMI cut points. Adjusted overweight prevalence was higher across all Asian subgroups compared to NHW men, except Filipinos. No significant pairwise relationships were observed for overweight prevalence among Asian subgroups. Filipinos had higher adjusted obesity prevalence compared to NHW men. Comparing among Asian American men, Asian Indians and Other Asians had higher adjusted obesity prevalence relative to Chinese. Filipinos had higher adjusted obesity prevalence compared to all other Asian subgroups (Chinese; Asian Indian; Other Asian). The current findings highlight the need for use of (a) WHO-recommended Asian-specific BMI cut points and (b) data disaggregated by Asian American subgroup, to provide more accurate depictions of overweight and obesity rates and associated health risks. Accounting for subgroup differences is necessary to ensure Asian American men receive equitable, appropriate care.

This study examines whether the effects of single-mother families (SMFs) on adolescent problem behavior are buffered by supportive mothering and the involvement of nonresident fathers and whether the effectiveness of these two buffers varies by ethnicity. Based on the data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, the authors find that supportive mothering within SMFs buffers their effects for most groups. Compared to other ethnic groups, Asian American mothers’ supportiveness is less effective in buffering the impact on drug use. For Black adolescents, nonresident father involvement buffers the effects on delinquency and drug use. However, Asian American and Hispanic father involvement in SMFs is associated with increased problem behavior. The findings suggest that ethnic groups with more experience dealing with SMFs may be ahead of those with less experience in developing child-rearing practices that buffer the effects of SMFs on problem behavior.

Sexual abuse is a profound stressor that complicates the development and health of adolescents, yet its prevalence has been difficult to estimate among adolescents in school populations. This study explored the prevalence of both incest and nonfamily abuse in 2 cohorts of adolescents in Minnesota in the 1990s (1992: N = 77,374; 1998: N = 81,247). Findings indicate that sexual abuse was reported by both boys and girls and among students of all ethnic groups. Approximately 10% of adolescents reported sexual abuse in each cohort, with girls 5 times more likely to report abuse than boys. Ethnic variation was minor, with African American, Native American, and Hispanic teens slightly more likely to report abuse than White or Asian American youth. School nurses should routinely assess for a history of sexual abuse in adolescents and should be prepared to provide support and referral for abused students and their families.). My research examines the influence of community cultural wealth and tauhi va on the navigation of Pacific Islanders (PIs) in STEM. The disaggregation of data on Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) attaining STEM bachelor's degrees revealed that PIs (16%) are represented half as much as Asian Americans (35%) (NCES, 2020). Under the AAPI designation, PIs have been masked, underserved, and underresearched in higher education and STEM. For this reason, this study focuses on the educational trajectories and experiences of PIs in STEM to highlight their strengths and challenges to understand how better to serve and support PIs in STEM. In this phenomenological study, I used an asset-based framework; community cultural wealth and a PI cultural value, tauhi va, to explore how PIs navigate STEM. The research questions for this study are (a) How do community cultural wealth and tauhi va influence the navigation of Pacific Islanders in STEM? and (b) How does tauhi va create va specific to Pacific Islanders to wayfind STEM and develop community cultural wealth? This qualitative study included 31 participants who self-identified as Pacific Islander and were students and recent graduates in STEM. The methods used in this study included a brief demographic survey, an educational trajectory map, and a 60- to 90-minute semistructured artifact elicitation interview using talanoa. The main finding of this study was that the navigation of PIs in STEM was influenced by familial, aspirational, social, navigational, and resistant capital. After facing barriers such as inadequate advising, stereotype threat, and competitive and cutthroat STEM culture from peers, faculty, and staff, PI students maneuvered through the skill of wayfinding. PIs created va (space) to relate, heal, and network with other PIs and individuals who had encountered similar experiences. PIs maintain va through tauhi va, or the caretaking of sociospatial relationships through reciprocity, thus developing Pacific Islander cultural capital to navigate STEM. This qualitative research is based on the successful navigation of PIs in STEM through an asset-based framework and cultural value to highlight the positive impact of PI cultural knowledge, PI identity, and nuances of PIs in STEM.

Nilai reka corak motif ukiran kayu yang dihasilkan oleh pandai kraf Bajau Sama di Kota Belud merupakan satu keunikan yang terdapat pada rumpun Bajau di negeri Sabah. Kajian ini membincangkan nilai reka corak yang terdapat pada ukkil motif ukiran kayu Bajau yang bersubjekkan burung atau hidupan di udara sebagai sumber inspirasi. Subjek burung diapresiasikan sebagai reka corak motif ukiran kayu pada senjata tradisional Bajau Sama. Contohnya burung Pimping, ayam (manuk) dan naga. Kajian ini dapat memahami nilai apresiasi panday kahuy Bajau terhadap reka corak ukkil motif bersubjekkan burung dan hubung-kaitnya dengan nilai budaya masyarakat Bajau Sama di Kota Belud. Kajian ini melibatkan proses pengumpulan data primer dan data sekunder. Proses pengumpulan data primer melibatkan temubual bersama adiguru panday kahuy Bajau dan pemerhatian secara langsung terhadap motif ukiran yang dihasilkan. Manakala, pengumpulan data sekunder adalah melalui jurnal dan buku ilmiah berkaitan dengan seni ukiran di alam Melayu. Penulis merujuk teori prinsip seni kraf tradisional Melayu dan kaedah Semantic Differential sebagai proses membuat analisa terhadap motif ukiran kayu. Pemerhatian ini diharap dapat memberi satu pemahaman umum memandangkan kurangnya dokumentasi terhadap makna interpretasi seni ukiran kayu Bajau Sama terutamanya subjek burung.   The value of wood carving motifs design created by the Bajau Sama craftsmens in Kota Belud is one of the uniqueness inherited by the Bajau ethnic groups in Sabah. This study discusses the uniqueness of Bajau wood carving motifs design with a bird as its source of inspiration. The subject of birds is appreciated in the design of Bajau traditional weapons. Birds that are used include burung Pimping, roasters (manuk) and dragons (naga). This study interpretes the value of Bajau woodcarvers in the design of bird-based motifs and their relationship to the cultural value of the Bajau Sama community in Kota Belud. This study has applied the process of collecting primary and secondary data. The primary data involved interviews with Bajau woodcarvers and observation of the carved motifs. Meanwhile, secondary data were collected from rjournals and books related to the art of wood carving in Malay world. The authors apply the principles of traditional Malay art and craft and the Semantic Differential method in analyzing the wood carving motifs. This observation is expected to provide a general understanding in the effort to fill in the literature gap of documentation and interpretation of the Bajau Sama motifs design especially on the subject of bird.
