e22116 Background: Direct-to-consumer (DTC) cancer genetic testing is increasingly common. However, little is know about peoples' attitudes about or preferences for DTC testing as compared to clinic-based genetic testing. Methods: We surveyed a convenience sample of 257 women without prior BRCA testing/counseling experience about their attitudes about and intentions to get online BRCA testing (90% participation rate). Subjects completed baseline interviews, viewed a modified commercial DTC website and completed an online survey. Results: Sample characteristics: mean age 37 (range 19–71), 80% white, mean education 3 years college, 45% with a household income <$50,000, 3% with a history of breast/ovarian cancer and mean Frank risk 4.7%. 64% of women expressed interest in BRCA testing at baseline and 24% intended to get tested in the next year. After viewing the website, 22% of women said that they would prefer DTC testing, 60% said that they would prefer clinic-based testing and 18% were indifferent. Overall, women believed that DTC testing would be more convenient (p <0.001), offer greater privacy (p <0.01), and be less likely to lead to discrimination (p <0.001) while clinic testing would provide more information (p <0.001) and counseling (p <0.001). After adjusting for confounders, older and less highly educated women had more positive attitudes about DTC BRCA testing (adjusted odds ratio (OR) 4.20, p= 0.02 and OR 10.3, p=0.03 high school (HS) vs. college and OR 16.1, p=0.02 HS vs. graduate school). Women with no health insurance and more positive attitudes about DTC genetic testing were more likely to prefer DTC genetic testing over clinic testing (adjusted OR 3.1, p=0.03 and OR 3.7, p<0.01). There were no associations between race and outcomes. Conclusions: A substantial minority of women expressed a preference for DTC BRCA testing after viewing a modified commercial website. Preferential interest in DTC testing by less educated and uninsured populations makes it especially critical that these sites provide high quality services. Without high quality service, the availability of DTC testing may only exacerbate disparities in genetic services and prevention. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

This paper investigates camera phone image quality, namely the effect of sensor megapixel (MP) resolution on the perceived quality of images displayed at full size on high-quality desktop displays. For the purpose, we use images from simulated cameras with different sensor MP resolutions. We employ methods recommended in the IEEE 1858 Camera Phone Image Quality (CPIQ) standard, as well as other established psychophysical paradigms, to obtain subjective image quality ratings for systems with varying MP resolution from large numbers of observers. These are subsequently used to validate image quality metrics (IQMs) relating to sharpness and resolution, including those from the CPIQ standard. Further, we define acceptable levels of quality - when changing MP resolution - for mobile phone images in Subjective Quality Scale (SQS) units. Finally, we map SQS levels to categories obtained from star-rating experiments (commonly used to rate consumer experience). Our findings draw a relationship between the MP resolution of the camera sensor and the LCD device. The chosen metrics predict quality accurately, but only the metrics proposed by CPIQ return results in calibrated JNDs in quality. We close by discussing the appropriateness of star-rating experiments for the purpose of measuring subjective image quality and metric validation.

A statistically average or prototypical member of a category (e.g., human faces) is often perceived as more attractive than less typical category members. Two experiments explored to what extent this may hold for music performance, an artistic domain in which individuality (i.e., deviation from prototypicality) is highly valued. In Experiment 1, graduate student pianists judged 11 student performances of Schumann's "Traumerei," one of which was created by forming the mathematical average of the other 10. The average performance was rated second highest in quality, even though it was judged second lowest in individuality. In Experiment 2, pianists judged 30 performances of the beginning of Chopin's Etude in E major, synthesized so as to vary only in expressive timing and tempo. The timing patterns were derived from expert pianists' recordings and from casual student performances, and they included separate and combined averages. All three averages received high quality ratings, and the expert average was rated highest of all 30 performances. There was a negative linear correlation between rated quality and individuality. Paradoxically, therefore, the students' expressive timing patterns were preferred over the experts'. Possible explanations of this finding are discussed, such as interactions between timing and other performance parameters and conditions under which conventionality tends to be favored over individuality.

Given that consumers value quality, and advertising content informs consumers’ beliefs about quality, it is not surprising that high-quality brands emphasize quality in their advertising content. What is less obvious is whether firms with lower-quality brands should also follow suit and emphasize quality in their advertising to signal a higher quality. We examine this issue and study the effectiveness of quality-based advertising messages. Our field study relates brands’ monthly sales to their advertised quality claims across 1,876 print ads in national magazines and Consumer Reports–based product quality ratings over more than two decades. Contrary to the generally held yet erroneous belief in the efficacy of low-quality products emphasizing quality in their advertising, we demonstrate that (1) it is not beneficial for a low-quality firm to emphasize quality in its advertising, and (2) it is effective for a high-quality firm to do so. An analysis of parameter values from a published category-agnostic simulation and an experiment that examines consumers’ responses to quality claims in a second product category yields convergent insights.

The purpose of this paper is multifold.Key aspects discussed include exploring the extent of theory discussion and progression in social work journals for the year 2004; discussing the necessity of theory in social work research and practice; reviewing previous research literature regarding evaluation of theory discussion and progression; proposing criteria for defining theory in social work journals; and presenting findings from the current study concerning theory discussion and progression in social work journals. Results: Of the 1,168 articles reviewed from 37 journals, 71 (approximately 6%) met the criteria for theory development with empirical base. Thus, a minimal number of articles (3 out of 71 or 4.2%) evaluated, based on the criteria in the theory quality scale (Table 1), received high quality ratings. Conclusion: Based on the results yielded by the analysis, we assert that social workers need to make a conscious effort to include theory in practice decisions.

For processing frozen green bananas of high quality it is recommended that the fruit be harvested at a pulp to peel ratio of about 1.5. In green handpeeled bananas shear press force values decreased linearly with an increase in pulp to peel ratios. Hot water peeling softens the fruit and results in a reverse relationship of pulp to peel ratios and shear press values, shear press values increasing linearly with pulp to peel ratios. The change in shear press values with pulp to peel ratios in thawed and boiled fruit follows this same pattern. The hardening effect of heating on the pulp texture was detected in sensory analysis. Fruit with a pulp to peel ratio ranging from 1.3 to 1.5 was found to be of acceptable texture. Sensory analysis of the frozen product cooked without thawing showed that the appearance, flavor and sample quality ratings increased as the pulp to peel ratio increased. Fruit with higher pulp to peel ratios had less off-flavor than less developed fruit probably due to the higher tann in content of the latter. No change in carbohydrates, moisture and ascorbic acid content was detected in fruit ranging in pulp to peel ratios from .9 to 1.6. The acidity increased and the pH decreased as pulp to peel ratios increased.
