At the turn of the new millennium, in an article published in Language Teaching Research in 2000, Dörnyei and Kormos proposed that ‘active learner engagement is a key concern’ for all instructed language learning. Since then, language engagement research has increased exponentially. In this article, we present a systematic review of 20 years of language engagement research. To ensure robust coverage, we searched 21 major journals on second language acquisition (SLA) and applied linguistics and identified 112 reports satisfying our inclusion criteria. The results of our analysis of these reports highlighted the adoption of heterogeneous methods and conceptual frameworks in the language engagement literature, as well as indicating a need to refine the definitions and operationalizations of engagement in both quantitative and qualitative research. Based on these findings, we attempted to clarify some lingering ambiguity around fundamental definitions, and to more clearly delineate the scope and target of language engagement research. We also discuss future avenues to further advance understanding of the nature, mechanisms, and outcomes resulting from engagement in language learning.

The course of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is supposed to prepare students for the professional sector, yet the course at IAIN Palopo in Indonesi is designed in general English without any professional input or assessment of the learner's needs. This research is motivated by the Communication and Islamic Broadcasting program students’ complaints of unsatisfaction with the course since it does not meet their needs. This research aims to examine the English needs of students studying in the communication and Islamic broadcasting program. The researchers used a mixed-methods strategy that incorporates both quantitative and qualitative research. The participants in this study were 60 undergraduates and 30 graduate students. Data was gathered through questionnaires and interviews. The data was then analyzed using the comprehensive concept of need analysis proposed by Dudley-Evans & St. John (1998). The results revealed that the majority of students learn English to help them advance in their careers. Their top priority in ESP is to improve their speaking skills, followed by listening, reading, and writing. Due to the repetitive learning method, inappropriate textbook, and short duration, according to the interview results, the students were also unsatisfied with the present ESP course.

By applying a theoretical framework based on different models proposed in border studies literature, this article analyzes the morphological, functional, institutional and identity characteristics that make Point Roberts—an American exclave in the Pacific Northwest—a “cross-border town”. Using an online survey and face-to-face interviews, the author combines both quantitative and qualitative research methods in order to examine the forces that link Point Roberts and the Canadian city of Delta that lies across the Canada–US border. This paper highlights the specificities of this unique geographic configuration as well the challenges that the border represents.

This study analyzes the participation of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Amapá (IFAP) in the expansion of undergraduate courses in the context of Amapá in the period from 2011 to 2019. It is a quantitative and qualitative research, anchored in the analysis theoretical references and documents, with statistical data in the Unified Public Administration System (SUAP / IFAP) and interviews with students, teachers and managers of the Institution. The objective is to point out the advances and challenges of this process, related to the context in which they operate. The results showed that IFAP plays an important role in expanding the offer of teacher training courses in the State of Amapá, since, in eight years, there has been an expressive growth in the number / enrollment places, contributing to the access to Higher Education and consequent schooling, in addition to contributing to overcoming the shortage of teachers in the northern region and in the country.

This paper proposed to discuss the socio-environmental conditions of women at prison in Karachi.1 Prison is kind of punishment in which people are physically restricted of a range of personal freedom. Besides this, in jail manual, women have been protected by different rules and regulations. This paper is an explanatory study based on quantitative and qualitative research methodology. The questionnaire method was used for the purpose of data collection. The study shows that the situation on ground and the conditions of women prisoners is not good. In Pakistan rules and laws are available however, they are not implemented. This paper also suggests measures and recommendations in order to overcome the unhealthy and unhygienic condition faced by women prisoners at Karachi Central Jail.

Background: Preeclampsia is a syndrome in terms of hypertension after 20-week pregnancy referring to a pregnant woman that previously had normal blood pressure, followed by having hypertension, proteinuria, edema and generally occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy. Preeclampsia is one of five main causes of maternal mortality up to 12% in the world as well. Objective: This study was conducted to describe nutritional status of pregnant women with preeclampsia in Aru Islands Regency, Dobo City, Southeast Maluku. Methodology: This study used mix methods, namely, quantitative and qualitative research with Case Study design. Qualitative research was to determine nutritional status of pregnant women with preeclampsia and quantitative research was to record nutrition intake of pregnant women and measure nutritional status of pregnant women with preeclampsia. Results & Discussion: Characteristics of participants with preeclampsia were more than 27 years old, worked as housewife that could be one of stress triggers and had some risk to increase preeclampsia cases because of stress that caused blood pressure increase. Preeclampsia was detected in pregnancy term of participants about 20-30 weeks according to Maternal and Child Health data. Preeclampsia risk was doubly by every increase in body weight (5-7 kg). Participants had body weight increase ranging from 8-25 kg which caused preeclampsia risk increase. Parameters of recommended dietary allowances of pregnant women including energy excess, protein deficit, fat excess, calcium and zinc deficiency were secondary factor of preeclampsia risk increase in Aru Islands Regency, Dobo City, Southeast Maluku.

These include the question of whether democratic leadership is possible, how one goes about bridging the divide between quantitative and qualitative research, how gender equality is conceptualized by the United Nations, whether remittances allow states to provide less in terms of social spending to their constituents, and the effects of persistent terrorism on levels of tolerance. As always, we try to illustrate in this volume the variety of research themes and methodologies that are prevalent in our discipline.
