Abstract A universal characterization of non-Markovianity for any open hybrid quantum systems is presented. This formulation is based on the negativity volume of the generalized Wigner function, which serves as an indicator of the quantum correlations in any composite quantum systems. It is shown, that the proposed measure can be utilized for any single or multi-partite quantum system, containing any discrete or continuous variables. To demonstrate its power in revealing non-Markovianity in such quantum systems, we additionally consider a few illustrative examples.

We review the scheme of quantum Lyapunov control and its applications into quantum systems. After a brief review on the general method of quantum Lyapunov control in closed and open quantum systems, we apply it into controlling quantum states and quantum operations. The control of a spin-1/2 quantum system, driving an open quantum system into its decoherence free subspace (DFS), constructing single qubit and two-qubit logic gates are taken to illustrate the scheme. The optimalization of the Lyapunov control is also reviewed in this article.

We develop a perturbation theory to estimate the finite time corrections around a quasi static trajectory, in which a quantum system is able to equilibrate at each instant with its environment. The results are then applied to non equilibrium thermodynamics, in which context we are able to provide a connection between the irreversible contributions and the microscopic details of the dynamical map generating the evolution. Turning the attention to finite time Carnot engines, we found a universal connection between the spectral density esponent of the hot/cold thermal baths and the efficiency at maximum power, giving also a new interpretation to already known results such as the Curzon-Ahborn and the Schmiedl-Seifert efficiencies.

Novel concepts, perspectives and challenges in measuring and controlling an open quantum system via sequential schemes are shown. We discuss how similar protocols, relying both on repeated quantum measurements and dynamical decoupling control pulses, can allow to: (i) Confine and protect quantum dynamics from decoherence in accordance with the Zeno physics. (ii) Analytically predict the probability that a quantum system is transferred into a target quantum state by means of stochastic sequential measurements. (iii) Optimally reconstruct the spectral density of environmental noise sources by orthogonalizing in the frequency domain the filter functions driving the designed quantum-sensor. The achievement of these tasks will enhance our capability to observe and manipulate open quantum systems, thus bringing advances to quantum science and technologies.

We investigate the ability of Wigner function to reveal and measure general quantum correlations in two-qubit open system. For this purpose, we analyze comparatively their dynamics for two different states, continuous-variable Werner states (CWS) and Bell-diagonal states (BDS), independently interacting with dephasing reservoirs. Then, we explore the effects of decreasing the degree of non-Markovianity on their behavior. We show that the presence of both quantum entanglement and quantum discord allow to have a negative Wigner function, in contrast to the result obtained for the closed two-qubit system [F. Siyouri, M. El Baz and Y. Hassouni, The negativity of Wigner function as a measure of quantum correlations, Quantum Inf. Process. 15(10) (2016) 4237–4252]. In fact, we conclude that negativity of Wigner function can be used to capture and quantify the amount of general non-classical correlations in open quantum systems.
