Tungsten trioxide (WO3) was surface modified with Cu(II) nanoclusters and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanopowders by using a simple impregnation method followed by a physical combining method. The obtained nanocomposites were studied by scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra, UV-visible light spectra, and photoluminescence, respectively. Although the photocatalytic activity of WO3was negligible under visible light irradiation, the visible light photocatalytic activity of WO3was drastically enhanced by surface modification of Cu(II) nanoclusters and TiO2nanopowders. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is due to the efficient charge separation by TiO2and Cu(II) nanoclusters functioning as cocatalysts on the surface. Thus, this simple strategy provides a facile route to prepare efficient visible-light-active photocatalysts for practical application.

A visible light active nitrogen-doped ZnO (N-ZnO) was synthesized using a solvent-free mechanochemical method and applied to degrade methylene blue (MB) dye in aqueous suspension. Results showed that nitrogen doping improved the photocatalytic activity of pristine ZnO by extending its spectral response to visible region. Using 2 g/L of N-ZnO, 98% MB with the initial concentration of 10 mg/L could be degraded within 2 h at pH 7 under 11.3 klux of visible light irradiation. After 6th run, it still exhibited appreciable photocatalytic activity with 94% MB degradation, indicating its high reusability though a simple pretreatment was performed.

A low temperature (130 °C) hydrothermal method was proposed for the synthesis of SnO2-SnS2 nanocomposite. The composition, structure and optical property of the as-synthesized SnO2-SnS2 nanocomposite were characterized by X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra, and its photocatalytic activity was tested by the reduction of Cr(VI) in water under visible light (λ > 420 nm) irradiation. It was found that the as-synthesized SnO2-SnS2 nanocomposite exhibited high photocatalytic activity in the reduction of Cr(VI) in water under visible light (λ > 420 nm) irradiation, whereas SnO2 nanoparticles displayed no photocatalytic activity in the reduction of Cr(VI) in water under visible light (λ > 420 nm) irradiation.
