A series of novel blue-light-emitting 2H-imidazo[5,1-a]isoquinolinium chloride derivatives were synthesized by the reaction of isoquinoline with trifluoroacetimidoyl chlorides and isocyanides in dry CH2Cl2 in excellent yields. Fluorescence studies showed that the compounds absorb UV radiation and then emit blue light at about 481 nm with moderate to good fluorescence quantum yields. These compounds also showed high Stokes shifts, and can be used to develop ultrasensitive fluorescent molecular probes to study a variety of biological events and processes.

A series of meso-aryloxy linked BODIPY monomers, dimers and trimer were synthesized by nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr) reaction from phenols with meso-chloro BODIPY and their photophysical properties were systematically studied by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. The relationship between their photophysical properties and the spatial arrangement of meso-aryloxy linked BODIPYs has been discussed. The monomers exhibited different extent solvent-dependent fluorescence, and fluorescence quenching in polar solvents were found relative to the HOMO energies of the donor (meso-phenols), indicating possible PET effect from meso-phenols to the BODIPY fluorophore. Ortho-dimer showed unusual broad red-shifted emission bands centered at 550 nm with a larger Stokes shifts at the range of 2900–3400 cm[Formula: see text], and low fluorescence quantum yields, which was in sharp contrast to those of other dimers and trimer, indicating of possible excimeric species formation due to slipped cofacial arrangement ofortho-dimer.

A facile protocol for the unprecedented one-pot H2SO4-mediated hydroxymethylation/cyclative N,O-acetalization of 4-aminocoumarins to 1,4-dihydro-2H,5H-chromeno[4,3-d][1,3]oxazin-5-ones, in moderate to good yields, was developed and optimized. The scope and limitations of the transformation, which takes place in water or water/THF mixtures, were also studied. The nitrogen atom of the resulting tricycles was used to tether alkyl, aryl and 1,2,3-triazolylmethyl moieties, employing a two-step click chemistry approach for the latter. The photophysical properties of the heterocycles, as well as of their 1,2,3-triazole derivatives, were also examined. The N-aryl derivatives exhibited high quantum yields of fluorescence (up to Φf = 0.69) and very large Stokes shifts (up to 201 nm).

Herein we report four [Ir(N^C)2(L^L)]n+, n = 0,1 complexes (1–4) containing cyclometallated N^C ligand (N^CH = 1-phenyl-2-(4-(pyridin-2-yl)phenyl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole) and various bidentate L^L ligands (picolinic acid (1), 2,2′-bipyridine (2), [2,2′-bipyridine]-4,4′-dicarboxylic acid (3), and sodium 4,4′,4″,4‴-(1,2-phenylenebis(phosphanetriyl))tetrabenzenesulfonate (4). The N^CH ligand precursor and iridium complexes 1–4 were synthesized in good yield and characterized using chemical analysis, ESI mass spectrometry, and NMR spectroscopy. The solid-state structure of 2 was also determined by XRD analysis. The complexes display moderate to strong phosphorescence in the 550–670 nm range with the quantum yields up to 30% and lifetimes of the excited state up to 60 µs in deoxygenated solution. Emission properties of 1–4 and N^CH are strongly pH-dependent to give considerable variations in excitation and emission profiles accompanied by changes in emission efficiency and dynamics of the excited state. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD DFT) calculations made it possible to assign the nature of emissive excited states in both deprotonated and protonated forms of these molecules. The complexes 3 and 4 internalize into living CHO-K1 cells, localize in cytoplasmic vesicles, primarily in lysosomes and acidified endosomes, and demonstrate relatively low toxicity, showing more than 80% cells viability up to the concentration of 10 µM after 24 h incubation. Phosphorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (PLIM) experiments in these cells display lifetime distribution, the conversion of which into pH values using calibration curves gives the magnitudes of this parameter compatible with the physiologically relevant interval of the cell compartments pH.

AbstractA rapid access to a series of N-heteroarene fluorophores has been developed on the basis of the palladium-catalyzed direct oxidative C–H/C–H coupling of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines with thiophenes/furans. The photophysical properties–structure relationship was systematically investigated. The resulting N-heteroarene fluorophores present color-tunable emissions (λem: 431–507 nm in CH2Cl2) and high fluorescence quantum yields (up to 91% in CH2Cl2).

In recent work, the boron hydride anti-B18H22 was announced in the literature as a new laser dye, and, along with several of its derivatives, its solutions are capable of delivering blue luminescence with quantum yields of unity. However, as a dopant in solid polymer films, its luminescent efficiencies reduce dramatically. Clarification of underlying detrimental effects is crucial for any application and, thus, this contribution makes the initial steps in the use of these inorganic compounds in electrooptical devices based on organic polymer thin films. The photoluminescence behavior of the highly luminescent boron hydrides, anti-B18H22 and 3,3′,4,4′-Et4-anti-B18H18, were therefore investigated. The quantum yields of luminescence and photostabilities of both compounds were studied in different solvents and as polymer-solvent blends. The photophysical properties of both boranes are evaluated and discussed in terms of their solvent-solute interactions using photoluminescence (PL) and NMR spectroscopies. The UV degradability of prepared thin films was studied by fluorimetric measurement. The effect of the surrounding atmosphere, dopant concentration and the molecular structure were assessed.

Quinone methide precursors 1a–e, with different alkyl linkers between the naphthol and the naphthalimide chromophore, were synthesized. Their photophysical properties and photochemical reactivity were investigated and connected with biological activity. Upon excitation of the naphthol, Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) to the naphthalimide takes place and the quantum yields of fluorescence are low (ΦF ≈ 10−2). Due to FRET, photodehydration of naphthols to QMs takes place inefficiently (ΦR ≈ 10−5). However, the formation of QMs can also be initiated upon excitation of naphthalimide, the lower energy chromophore, in a process that involves photoinduced electron transfer (PET) from the naphthol to the naphthalimide. Fluorescence titrations revealed that 1a and 1e form complexes with ct-DNA with moderate association constants Ka ≈ 105–106 M−1, as well as with bovine serum albumin (BSA) Ka ≈ 105 M−1 (1:1 complex). The irradiation of the complex 1e@BSA resulted in the alkylation of the protein, probably via QM. The antiproliferative activity of 1a–e against two human cancer cell lines (H460 and MCF 7) was investigated with the cells kept in the dark or irradiated at 350 nm, whereupon cytotoxicity increased, particularly for 1e (>100 times). Although the enhancement of this activity upon UV irradiation has no imminent therapeutic application, the results presented have importance in the rational design of new generations of anticancer phototherapeutics that absorb visible light.

New indeno[1,2-c]pyran-3-ones bearing different substituents at the pyran moiety were synthesized and their photophysical properties were investigated. In solution all compounds were found to be blue emitters and the trans isomers exhibited significantly higher fluorescence quantum yields (relative to 9,10-diphenylanthracene) as compared to the corresponding cis isomers. The solid-state fluorescence spectra revealed an important red shift of λmax due to intermolecular interactions in the lattice, along with an emission-band broadening, as compared to the solution fluorescence spectra.
