Aims. The purpose of this paper is to detect and investigate the nature of long-term radial velocity (RV) variations of K-type giants and to confirm planetary companions around the stars. Methods. We have conducted two planet search programs by precise RV measurement using the 1.8 m telescope at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO) and the 1.88 m telescope at Okayama Astrophysical Observatory (OAO). The BOAO program searches for planets around 55 early K giants. The OAO program is looking for 190 G–K type giants. Results. In this paper, we report the detection of long-period RV variations of three K giant stars, HD 40956, HD 111591, and HD 113996. We investigated the cause of the observed RV variations and conclude the substellar companions are most likely the cause of the RV variations. The orbital analyses yield P = 578.6 ± 3.3 d, m sin i = 2.7 ± 0.6 MJ, a = 1.4 ± 0.1 AU for HD 40956; P = 1056.4 ± 14.3 d, m sin i = 4.4 ± 0.4 MJ, a = 2.5 ± 0.1 AU for HD 111591; P = 610.2 ± 3.8 d, m sin i = 6.3 ± 1.0 MJ, a = 1.6 ± 0.1 AU for HD 113996.

AbstractAt McDonald Observatory we have been monitoring the relative radial velocities of a sample of K giants. The technique employed uses the telluric O2 lines near 6300 Å as a reference for measuring the stellar line shifts. We demonstrate that precisions of 10 m s−1 are possible with this technique. We present radial velocity data covering a 2 year time span for α Boo, α Tau, and β Gem. All of these stars show both long term variations (~ several hundred days) with a peak-to-peak amplitude of about 400 m s−1 and short term variations (~ few days) with a peak-to-peak amplitude of about 100 m s−1. The long term variations may be due to the rotational modulation of surface active regions whereas the short term variations may be indicative of pulsations.

Context. The census of stellar and substellar companions of nearby stars is largely incomplete, in particular toward the low-mass brown dwarf and long-period exoplanets. It is, however, fundamentally important in the understanding of the stellar and planetary formation and evolution mechanisms. Nearby stars are particularly favorable targets for high precision astrometry. Aims. We aim to characterize the presence of physical companions of stellar and substellar mass in orbit around nearby stars. Methods. Orbiting secondary bodies influence the proper motion of their parent star through their gravitational reflex motion. Using the HIPPARCOS and Gaia’s second data release (GDR2) catalogs, we determined the long-term proper motion of the stars common to these two catalogs. We then searched for a proper motion anomaly (PMa) between the long-term proper motion vector and the GDR2 (or HIPPARCOS) measurements, indicative of the presence of a perturbing secondary object. We focussed our analysis on the 6741 nearby stars located within 50 pc, and we also present a catalog of the PMa for ≳99% of the HIPPARCOS catalog (≈117 000 stars). Results. 30% of the stars studied present a PMa greater than 3σ. The PMa allows us to detect orbiting companions, or set stringent limits on their presence. We present a few illustrations of the PMa analysis to interesting targets. We set upper limits of 0.1−0.3 MJ to potential planets orbiting Proxima between 1 and 10 au (Porb = 3 to 100 years). We confirm that Proxima is gravitationally bound to α Cen. We recover the masses of the known companions of ϵ Eri, ϵ Ind, Ross 614 and β Pic. We also detect the signature of a possible planet of a few Jovian masses orbiting τ Ceti. Conclusions. Based on only 22 months of data, the GDR2 has limitations. But its combination with the HIPPARCOS catalog results in very high accuracy PMa vectors, that already enable us to set valuable constraints on the binarity of nearby objects. The detection of tangential velocity anomalies at a median accuracy of σ(ΔvT) = 1.0 m s−1 per parsec of distance is already possible with the GDR2. This type of analysis opens the possibility to identify long period orbital companions otherwise inaccessible. For long orbital periods, Gaia’s complementarity to radial velocity and transit techniques (that are more sensitive to short orbital periods) already appears to be remarkably powerful.

AbstractObservations during the first eight years of operation of the Fick Observatory photoelectric radial velocity spectrometer have led to the development of a list of approximately seventy bright late giant stars with suspected small amplitude long period velocity variations. Some of these stars have been identified as variable velocity objects by other observers, and a few of them have previous low quality orbit determinations or estimations. Preliminary SB1 orbits are reported for eight of the list members which have been observed through at least one complete cycle. Estimates of the period (P) and velocity semiamplitude (K) are made for other confirmed variables. Generally, the sample contains long P (2 to 8 years), small K (4 to 14 km/sec), late giant systems.

Context. Since 1998, a planet-search around main sequence stars within 50 pc in the southern hemisphere has been underway with the CORALIE spectrograph at La Silla Observatory. Aims. With an observing time span of more than 20 yr, the CORALIE survey is able to detect long-term trends in data with masses and separations large enough to select ideal targets for direct imaging. Detecting these giant companion candidates will allow us to start bridging the gap between radial-velocity-detected exoplanets and directly imaged planets and brown dwarfs. Methods. Long-term precise Doppler measurements with the CORALIE spectrograph reveal radial-velocity signatures of massive planetary companions and brown dwarfs on long-period orbits. Results. In this paper, we report the discovery of new companions orbiting HD 181234, HD 13724, HD 25015, HD 92987 and HD 50499. We also report updated orbital parameters for HD 50499b, HD 92788b and HD 98649b. In addition, we confirm the recent detection of HD 92788c. The newly reported companions span a period range of 15.6–40.4 yr and a mass domain of 2.93–26.77 MJup, the latter of which straddles the nominal boundary between planets and brown dwarfs. Conclusions. We report the detection of five new companions and updated parameters of four known extrasolar planets. We identify at least some of these companions to be promising candidates for imaging and further characterisation.

We present results from our precision radial velocity (RV) program at ESO La Silla. The achievable RV precision after the upgrade of the CES spectrograph is demonstrated. We apply the method of pooled variance diagrams to compare our short-term with our long-term precision. For the active planet-hosting star ι Hor we determine the influence of stellar activity and the rotation period, and address the question of a second long-period planet. For the RV signal in ∊ Eri we demonstrate the distinctness of the time scales present in the RV and Call data, providing further support for the planetary interpretation in this active star.

Some astronomers have suggested long period phenomena in the Be stars: Hubert (1971), Delplace and Hubert (1975), Feinstein (1975), Harmanec et al. (1976), Pustylnik (1976). In particular, Fracassini et al. (1977) have made a periodogram analysis of the radial velocities (RV) of the Be star o And from 1900 to 1976, to connect the shell appearance with eventual long-term RV variations. In the present study all the RV of seven Be stars, found in the literature from the beginning of the century up to now, have been assembled and analysed in the same way as o And, in order to find out long period phenomena (duplicity, variability, shell activity, etc…). A brief review on the studied stars may be found in Harmanec et al. (1980).

For more than a decade we have been able to acquire and analyse a significant amount of photometric data of the highly variable R Coronae Borealis (RCB) stars. This has made been possible by a photometric service observing programme instigated at the Observatory. These photometric data have been combined with less extensive spectroscopic coverage, particularly of the decline phase of these stars. These have been supplemented by observations obtained at Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatories for a radial velocity study. Significantly more spectroscopic observations are now being acquired with the development of a new medium resolution spectrograph at Mount John University Observatory. In this poster we will present recent photometric and spectroscopic results for a number of the RCB stars in our sample. This observational and analysis work can be used to provide further insight into the nature of these stars, their likely progeny and progenitors and the processes that are involved in the formation and evolution of the obscuring dust clouds which cause the decline phase.

AbstractI have used the 1.2-m telescope and coudé spectrograph of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory for more than 30 years in a program of radial-velocity observations of binary stars. The program was begun with photographic plates as detectors, but for 20 years the primary detector has been the radial-velocity scanner, which cross-correlates stellar spectra with an artificial mask.Since some of the binaries under observation have periods of several years, the instrument’s stability is an important consideration. I have therefore been obliged to observe standard stars and asteroids to check its performance. These observations are of relevance to efforts to improve the IAU standard star system.I will describe the telescope, spectrograph and scanner, and will briefly discuss some of the results obtained for a selection of binary and multiple stars.

Drawing on administrative data from the Social Security Administration, we find that individuals that go through a long period of non-employment suffer large and long-term earnings losses (around 35-40 percent) compared to individuals with similar age and previous earnings histories. Importantly, these differences depend on past earnings, and are largest at the bottom and top of the earnings distribution. Focusing on workers that are employed 10 years after a period of long-term non-employment, we find much smaller earnings losses (8-10 percent). Furthermore, the large earnings losses of low-income individuals are almost entirely due to employment effects.
