It is proposed to simplify the debate about the heritability of mental traits in humans by concentrating on two crucial issues: Population specificity of heritability estimates and the relation of these estimates to the malleability of the trait to which they refer. It is demonstrated that due to vast differences between the environmental variations of populations there would have to be a heritability estimate for every imaginable population, and that a heritability estimate allows no predictions whatsoever about the malleability of the trait in question. It is therefore concluded that this field of research should be abandoned.

Abstract The majority of the genome is transcribed to RNA in living organisms. RNA transcripts can form astonishing arrays of secondary and tertiary structures via Watson-Crick, Hoogsteen or wobble base pairing. In vivo, RNA folding is not a simple thermodynamics event of minimizing free energy. Instead, the process is constrained by transcription, RNA binding proteins (RBPs), steric factors and micro-environment. RNA secondary structure (RSS) plays myriad roles in numerous biological processes, such as RNA processing, stability, transportation and translation in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Emerging evidence has also implicated RSS in RNA trafficking, liquid-liquid phase separation and plant responses to environmental variations such as temperature and salinity. At the molecular level, RSS is correlated with regulating splicing, polyadenylation, protein systhsis, and miRNA biogenesis and functions. In this review, we summarized newly reported methods for probing RSS in vivo and functions and mechanisms of RSS in plant physiology.

Although nonstationarity in marine ecosystems has attracted great attention, the nonstationary responses of demersal fishes to environmental variations induced by the changing climate are still not well understood. Here, we collected 21 time series of demersal fishes from 1956 to 2015 to investigate the climate-induced nonstationary responses in temperate waters of the northwestern North Pacific (NWP). We showed that these demersal fishes experienced state shifts in approximately 1986/87, accompanied by abrupt warming over this region. Moreover, the relationships between demersal fishes and sea surface temperature (SST) were found to change between the two identified eras (i.e., a weak relationship before 1986 and a strong negative relationship after 1986), which may be primarily caused by the alternating dominance of the East Asian winter monsoon and mega-ENSO on SST in temperate waters of the NWP. The identified climate-induced nonstationary responses of demersal fishes to SST variability in this study may provide implications for understanding climate-induced biological dynamics, predicting demersal fish fluctuations, coping with potential ecological risks, and the sustainable exploitation of fishery resources in the future climate. Note that the impact of fishing on the demersal fishes in temperate waters of the NWP was not assessed in this study due to the lack of fishing effort data and therefore the conclusions of our research should be approached with caution.

WiFi-based Device-free Passive (DfP) indoor localization systems liberate their users from carrying dedicated sensors or smartphones, and thus provide a non-intrusive and pleasant experience. Although existing fingerprint-based systems achieve sub-meter-level localization accuracy by training location classifiers/regressors on WiFi signal fingerprints, they are usually vulnerable to small variations in an environment. A daily change, e.g., displacement of a chair, may cause a big inconsistency between the recorded fingerprints and the real-time signals, leading to significant localization errors. In this paper, we introduce a Domain Adaptation WiFi (DAFI) localization approach to address the problem. DAFI formulates this fingerprint inconsistency issue as a domain adaptation problem, where the original environment is the source domain and the changed environment is the target domain. Directly applying existing domain adaptation methods to our specific problem is challenging, since it is generally hard to distinguish the variations in the different WiFi domains (i.e., signal changes caused by different environmental variations). DAFI embraces the following techniques to tackle this challenge. 1) DAFI aligns both marginal and conditional distributions of features in different domains. 2) Inside the target domain, DAFI squeezes the marginal distribution of every class to be more concentrated at its center. 3) Between two domains, DAFI conducts fine-grained alignment by forcing every target-domain class to better align with its source-domain counterpart. By doing these, DAFI outperforms the state of the art by up to 14.2% in real-world experiments.

This study aims to build a chronology of the growth rings of Copaifera langsdorffii (copaíba) in order to understand the dynamics of vegetation types that occur on a river island in the Cerrado biome. For this purpose, we selected 30 trees of copaíba established in a vegetation of Mata Seca Sempre-Verde in the Pirapitinga Ecological Station (EEP), state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Two radial samples from each tree were collected by an auger. The samples were treated by mechanical polishing for better visualization of the growth rings, and consequently further delineation and measurement. Later, the width of the growth rings was verified in order to generate a master time series of the specie. To check the influence of meteorological factors, we used the Pearson correlation (p < 0.05). The results showed that the population of copaíba in the EEP presented dendrochronologyc potential, which was confirmed by the high values of wide growth rings correlation within and between trees. The dendrochronologyc analysis revealed that copaíba trees were already present before the dam filling, but with lower population density than today. It was also possible to infer that the development of the vegetation type Mata Seca Sempre-Verde occurred since the decade of the 1970. The average sensitivity was enough to consider the species sensitive to environmental variations. Precipitation and temperature only influenced positively the growth rings in the transition from dry to wet seasons. The results revealed information about the dynamics of the local vegetation, elucidating the changes that occurred in the environment in which the population of copaíba is established.

Fishing resources are important generators of income and food for the rural and urban people in the Amazon. The present paper investigates fishing and environmental variables determining fishing production landed in Manaus and evaluates the relative abundance of commercial fishes in the different sub-systems of the Central Amazon basin. Information collected was used to test the new catch index derived from multiple regressions with the following significant variables: number of fisherman days fishing; distance of the fishing ground from Manaus; amount of ice carried during the trip; and river level. There were no significant differences between mean catch values of the Purus, Madeira and Juruá sub-systems. These results suggest that the tributaries of the right margin were very similar and were the most productive in commercial terms. The actual production varies according to the recent magnitude of fishing effort, environmental variations and operational aspects of fishing, particularly ice consumption.
