An algorithm for modelling and numerical simulation of the three dimensional conjugate heat transfer in slab-embedded snow melting and freeze protecting systems is developed. The influence of the climate conditions on the heat transfer in the constructions is modelled according to the correspondent design method of ASHRAE. The models are verified and solved numerically via finite volume method for a road embedded hydronic installation at different piping configurations. The fluid flow parameters and temperature fields in the construction are obtained at steady state climate conditions, hardest for 95 % of the wintertime for the region. An analysis of the efficiency of the modelled configurations is implemented based on the computed snow-free area ratio of the road surfaces.

A calculation method for counter-current type coil-wound heat exchanger is presented for heat exchange process. The numerical simulation method is applied to determine the basic physical parameters of wound bundles. By controlling the inlet fluid velocity varying in coil-wound heat exchanger to program and calculate the iterative process. The calculation data is analyzed by comparison of numerical result and the unit three dimensional pipe bundle model was built. Studies show that the introduction of numerical simulation can simplify the pipe winding process and accelerate the calculation and design of overall configuration in coil-wound heat exchanger. This method can be applied to the physical modeling and heat transfer calculation of pipe bundles in coil wound heat exchanger, program to calculate the complex heat transfer changing with velocity and other parameters, and optimize the overall design and calculation of spiral bundles.

The three-dimensional numerical study of natural convection in a cubical enclosure, discretely heated, was carried out in this study. Two heating square sections, similar to the integrated electronic components, are placed on the vertical wall of the enclosure. The imposed heating fluxes vary sinusoidally with time, in phase and in opposition of phase. The temperature of the opposite vertical wall is maintained at a cold uniform temperature and the other walls are adiabatic. The governing equations are solved using Control volume method by SIMPLEC algorithm. The sections dimension ε = D / H and the Rayleigh number Ra were fixed respectively at 0,35 and 106. The average heat transfer and the maximum temperature on the active portions will be examined for a given set of the governing parameters, namely the amplitude of the variable temperatures a and their period τp. The obtained results show significant changes in terms of heat transfer, by proper choice of the heating mode and the governing parameters.

Heavy rain causes the highest drop in travel speeds compared with light and moderate rain because it can easily induce flooding on road surfaces, which can continue to hinder urban transportation even after the rainfall is over. However, very few studies have specialized in researching the multistage impacts of the heavy rain process on urban roads, and the cumulative effects of heavy rain in road networks are often overlooked. In this study, the heavy rain process is divided into three consecutive stages, i.e., prepeak, peak, and postpeak. The impact of heavy rain on a road is represented by a three-dimensional traffic speed change ratio vector. Then, the k-means clustering method is implemented to reveal the distinct patterns of speed change ratio vectors. Finally, the characteristics of the links in each cluster are analyzed. An empirical study of Shenzhen, China suggests that there are three major impact patterns in links. The differences among links associated with the three impact patterns are related to the road category, travel speeds in no rain days, and the number of transportation facilities. The findings in this research can contribute to a more in-depth understanding of the relationship between the heavy rain process and the travel speeds of urban roads and provide valuable information for traffic management and personal travel in heavy rain weather.

In this study, a 3D numerical study of free ventilated room equipped with a discrete heat source was performed using the Finite Volume Method (FVM). To ensure good ventilation, two parallel openings were created in the room. A suction opening was located at the bottom of the left wall and another opening was located at the top of the opposite wall; the heat source was placed at various positions in order to compare the heating efficiency. The effects of Rayleigh number (103 ≤ Ra ≤ 106) for six heater positions was studied. The results focus on the impact of these parameters on the particle trajectories, temperature fields and on the heat transfer inside the room. It was found that the position of the heater has a dramatic effect on the behavior and topography of the flow in the room. When the heat source was placed on the wall with the suction opening, two antagonistic behaviors were recorded: an improvement in heat transfer of about 31.6%, compared to the other positions, and a low Rayleigh number against 22% attenuation for high Ra values was noted.

Forced or natural ventilation is the most common measure of frost heave protection for refrigerated warehouse floor. To optimize air velocity for the underfloor forced ventilation system of refrigerated warehouse, a steady state three-dimensional mathematical model of heat transfer is set up in this paper. The temperature fields of this system are simulated and calculated by CFD software PHOENICS under different air velocity, 1.5m/s, 2.5m/s or 3.5m/s. The results show that the optimized air velocity is 1.5m/s when the tube spacing is 1.5m.

A three dimensional heat transfer model on laser-plasma hybrid welding has been proposed, that takes into account the interaction between laser beam and plasma arc. Through FEM computation, the temperature fields were computed and analyzed for an Al-Li alloy during laserplasma hybrid welding with different distances between the two heat sources. The simulation results are in agreement with the experimental results.

Performance of microchannel heatsink (MCHS) partially filled with foam is investigated numerically. The open cell copper foams have the porosity and pore density in the ranges of 60–90% and 60–100 PPI (pore per inch), respectively. The three-dimensional steady, laminar flow, and heat transfer governing equations are solved using finite volume method. The performance of microchannel heatsink is evaluated in terms of overall thermal resistance, pressure drop, and heat transfer coefficient and temperature distribution. It is found that the results of the surface temperature profile are in good agreement with numerical data. The results show the microchannel heatsink with insert foam appears to be good candidates as the next generation of cooling devices for high power electronic devices. The thermal resistance for all cases decreases with the decrease in porosity. The uniformity of temperature in this heatsink is enhanced compared the heatsink with no foam. The thermal resistance versus the pumping power is depicted, it is found that 80% is the optimal porosity for the foam at 60 PPI with a minimum thermal resistance 0.346 K/W. The results demonstrate the microchannel heatsink partially filled with foam is capable for removing heat generation 100 watt over an area of 9 × 10−6 m2 with the temperature of heat flux surface up to 59 °C.
