As the second biggest economic entity, China is conducting the largest fundamental construction in the world. Architectural engineering is an important part of fundamental construction and China is witnessing its biggest construction industry in the world. With continuous scientific and technological development, China has stepped in the big data era, which produces higher requirements for architectural and civil engineering industry. Digital engineering construction technology, such as BIM technology, effectively improved design, construction, operation and maintenance of BIM technology, effectively improved the design, construction, operation and maintenance technology and quality of large construction projects. For the time being, China is encouraging engineering application and promotion of BIM technique in engineering construction industry. Fast scale enlargement and technical innovation not only produce new opportunities for change of construction industry, but also put forth strict requirements for engineering ethics in architectural and civil engineering construction.

Shanghai Disaster Tolerance Center (SDTC) is the first case led by owner to apply the building information model (BIM) technology in the life cycle engineering construction of the center. BIM technology is applied in construction, operation and maintenance of SDTC to guarantee the quality management performance of construction, improve the efficiency of design, construction, operation and maintenance of the SDTC.

Big data applications consist of i) data collection using big data sources, ii) storing and processing the data, and iii) analysing data to gain insights for creating organisational benefit. The influx of digital technologies and digitization in the construction process includes big data as one newly emerging digital technology adopted in the construction industry. Big data application is in a nascent stage in construction, and there is a need to understand the tangible benefit(s) that big data can offer the construction industry. This study explores the benefits of big data in the construction industry. Using a qualitative case study design, construction professionals in an Australian Construction firm were interviewed. The research highlights that the benefits of big data include reduction of litigation amongst projects stakeholders, enablement of near to real-time communication, and facilitation of effective subcontractor selection. By implication, on a broader scale, these benefits can improve contract management, procurement, and management of construction projects. This study contributes to an ongoing discourse on big data application, and more generally, digitization in the construction industry.

Reduction of human error can have a significant impact on the potential for spills and leaks and translate into better safety performance and financial gains for an organization. As important as the technical components of a design, construction, operation, and maintenance program is the human component of the activities being performed. In the Pipeline Industry, human factors can create the potential for a human error at many points along the life cycle of a pipeline. Using a life cycle approach to manage human factors can provide an organization the capability to integrate human factors into programs, standards, procedures and processes using a disciplined approach. This paper reviews the life cycle of a pipeline and identifies areas where the potential for human error can have catastrophic results. Guidance is provided on the development of a human factors life cycle for the organization and illustrates available industry resources as well as opportunities for further research and development.

Based on the background of the Ministry of Finance’s concern about the issue of goodwill impairment and the frequent outbreak of goodwill impairment risk, this paper analyzes the difference in the proportion of goodwill impairment during the valuation adjustment mechanism ( VAM ) period and after the VAM period, with a view to providing theoretical and data reference suggestions for the standard-setters and regulators on preventing goodwill impairment risk and improving the relevant regime of VAM, and also providing theoretical support and risk warning for stakeholders in M&A. Combining the normative research method and the empirical research method, this paper takes the merger and acquisition event completed by the A-share listed companies of civil engineering construction industry in 2014-2016 as the initial sample, and studies the difference in the proportion of goodwill impairment during the VAM period and after the VAM period. The conclusion of this paper is: In the merger and acquisition transaction with VAM, the proportion of goodwill impairment of listed companies after the VAM period are greater than that of the VAM period.

Mobile computing technology has an enormous potential in civil engineering, mainly in the field of construction management. This paper presents an approach by using mobile computing in a civil engineering construction project, exploring how information can be exchanged at a construction site, and how billing of quantities (BOQ), drawings and specifications are shared for the benefit of the project. One of the major obstacles in using information technology (IT) when applied to civil engineering is due to the dynamic changes in the construction activities and the diversity of construction methods as compared to other industries. This has proved to be a great disadvantage when trying to give construction sites adequate IT support. Computers require infrastructure, which can be transferred easily to the head office, but rarely to the construction site itself in a systematic way. Therefore, the impact of IT on the way the construction industry actually works has not been significantly utilized. This paper consists of two main parts. The first part defines the concept of mobile computing, describes some recent research, and stresses the potential for the construction industry. The second part is focuses on an approach, implementing mobile computing in a real construction site.

Under the context that “peak carbon emissions” and “carbon neutrality” are included in the overall plan for the construction of ecological civilization in China, this paper discusses the value of modern timber architecture as a form of low-carbon and environmental protection movement in the whole life cycle of the construction field. It mainly analyzes the reasons for the limited resources, misunderstandings of inherent concepts, the high cost of comprehensive construction, and the shortage of professionals. Based on that, several countermeasures have been proposed, such as perfecting relevant norms and policies, strengthening technology research and development as well as demonstration guidance, moderately developing forest resources, applying digital construction operation and maintenance technology, as well as cultivating compound professionals, all of which provide a reference for the development of ecological benefits in China’s construction industry.
