We present some of the latest results of the CMS experiment, covering analyses in QCD multijet, top, bottom, Higgs, forward/small-x QCD, heavyion, exotic, and supersymmetry physics utilizing LHC integrated luminosity up to ~80 fb-1.

Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) have been chosen as dedicated trigger detectors for the CMS experiment at the LHC. The expected severe operating conditions have required an intense research and development activity on these detectors over the past years. Experimental results on overall performance of large chambers, rate capability, ageing and photon sensitity are reviewed. In all of these tests the detector has proven to achieve good enough performance for successful use at the LHC.

Various recent CMS B physics results are reported, including measurement of B hadron lifetimes; observation of Υ(1S) pair production; angular analysis of the rare decay B0 → K*0μ+μ-; search for X(5568) state. All analyses are performed using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at √s = 8 TeV, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of about 20 fb-1.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) began 7 TeV C.M. energy operation in April, 2010. The CMS experiment immediately analyzed the earliest data taken in order to "rediscover" the Standard Model (SM) of high energy physics. By the late summer, all SM particles were observed and CMS began to search for physics beyond the SM and beyond the present limits set at the Fermilab Tevatron. The first LHC run ended in Dec., 2010 with a total integrated luminosity of about 45 pb-1 delivered to the experiments.

The Large Hadron Collider is the world’s largest and highest centerof- mass energy particle accelerator. During the Phase I operation it is expected that the LHC operated at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV will deliver to the CMS experiment total integrated luminosity of ~300 fb-1 till 2023. The High Luminosity LHC upgrade is expected to run at a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV and will allow ATLAS and CMS to collect integrated luminosities of the order of 300 fb-1 per year, and up to 3000 fb-1 during the HL-LHC projected lifetime of ten years. The large expected integrated luminosity enables the exploration of the multi-TeV scale by searches for particles with high masses as well as by investigation of processes with very low cross sections such as Flavor-Change Neutral Current interactions in top quark sector. In this report we present a proposal for the top quark FCNC searches at HL-LHC based on Monte-Carlo simulation of the upgraded CMS detector.

AbstractIn order to achieve a nickel-like X ray laser scheme we need a tool to determine the parameters which characterise the high-Z plasma. The aim of this work is to study gold laser plasmas and to compare experimental results to a collisional-radiative model which describes nickel-like ions. The electronic temperature and density are measured by the emission of an aluminium tracer. They are compared to the predictions of the nickel-like model for pure gold. The results show that the density and temperature can be estimated in a pure gold plasma.

Since phase contrasts of STEM images, that is, Fresnel diffraction fringes or lattice images, manifest themselves in field emission scanning microscopy, the mechanism for image formation in the STEM mode has been investigated and compared with that in CTEM mode, resulting in the theory of reciprocity. It reveals that contrast in STEM images exhibits the same properties as contrast in CTEM images. However, it appears that the validity of the reciprocity theory, especially on the details of phase contrast, has not yet been fully proven by the experiments. In this work, we shall investigate the phase contrast images obtained in both the STEM and CTEM modes of a field emission microscope (100kV), and evaluate the validity of the reciprocity theory by comparing the experimental results.

A (111) phosphorus-doped Si specimen, thinned to give a TEM foil of thickness ∼ 150nm, contained a dislocation network lying on the (111) plane. The dislocation lines were along the three <211> directions and their total Burgers vectors,ḇt, were of the type , each dislocation being of edge character. TEM examination under proper weak-beam conditions seemed initially to show the standard contrast behaviour for such dislocations, indicating some dislocation segments were undissociated (contrast A), while other segments were dissociated to give two Shockley partials separated by approximately 6nm (contrast B) . A more detailed examination, however, revealed that some segments exhibited a third and anomalous contrast behaviour (contrast C), interpreted here as being due to a new dissociation not previously reported. Experimental results obtained for a dislocation along [211] with for the six <220> type reflections using (g,5g) weak-beam conditions are summarised in the table below, together with the relevant values.
