This paper proposes a method for determining the time at which the temperature of surface of a gauge block will be established. The relationship between the temperature of a gauge block, its length and the value of uncertainty of measurement when calibrating using this block was explained. Attention was paid to problems resulting from the applied measurement method. Particular attention was paid to thermal imaging observations of the lateral surface of a gauge block

Erectile dysfunction (ED) has been associated with considerable mental health and interpersonal problems, an increase in risky sex, and is particularly prevalent among gay and bisexual men. Psychological treatment protocols for sexual dysfunctions often aim at challenging beliefs and cognitions about the importance of a “perfect sexual performance,” known as sexual stereotypes. However, to date, little empirical evidence exists for the relationship between ED and belief in sexual stereotypes (BSS). To address this gap, 70 gay men were recruited; 30 with ED and 40 healthy controls. Participants completed a battery of questionnaires, including a measure of BSS, followed by having their genital temperature measured using a thermal imaging camera, while viewing a sexually explicit film. The study had four main objectives: (1) to evaluate between group differences in subjective sexual arousal and physiological arousal; (2) to examine within group differences in the effects of BSS on physiological and self-reported sexual arousal; (3) to evaluate the relationship between BSS, negative automatic thoughts during sex, and ED; and (4) to evaluate the relationship between ED and risky sex among gay men. Results revealed significant between-group differences in physiological arousal, but not in subjective sexual arousal. While between-group differences were found in BSS, no within-group differences were found in the relation of BSS on physiological and self-reported sexual arousal. No significant relationships were found between BSS, negative automatic thoughts, and ED. Participants with ED were found to be significantly more likely to use erectile enhancing drugs, but no significant differences in condom removal were found between groups; however, substantially more individuals with ED (23.3%) reported removing condoms prior to the completion of sexual activity, as compared to healthy controls (5%). Findings of this study contribute to improving psychological treatments for gay men with ED, as well as better understanding pathways leading to risky sex in gay men.

The inspectional method of estimating children's skeletal ages from an atlas of standard films is based on the fact that increase of size (e.g., of a carpel bone or epiphysis) is not equivalent to maturation. The deficiencies of the inspectional method, however, render measurement methods very desirable. After ossific centers have appeared, further changes (development or maturation) are largely expressible as changes in shape or proportions, and are therefore measurable; but, to avoid the complexity of expressing shape by measurement, the present study started from the premise that change in shape is associated (although to an unknown degree) with increase in linear dimensions. On all the reproductions in the Todd and Greulich-Pyle hand atlases, and on Todd's intermediates (film-reproductions of roentgenograms used in the atlas), simple linear measurements were made on four maturity indicators: radius epiphysis, capitate, metacarpal III epiphysis, and the epiphysis of the proximal phalanx of digit III. To express the relationship between age and the size of each indicator, moving-average curves were developed (usually by 5-point averages). To obtain a "measurement estimate" of the skeletal age of any film, the age estimates derived from the curves for the four indicators were averaged, giving equal weight to each indicator. For the Todd intermediates a more complicated method of estimating age from indicator sizes was also used—a multiple regression equation, which automatically allotted an appropriate weight to each indicator and permitted adjustment for general hand (or bone) size where required (phalanx shaft width as an adjustment for epiphysis width). The ages estimated by measurement (moving-average and regression methods) were compared with inspectional estimates, from Todd and Greulich-Pyle atlases, on three series of roentgenograms comprising a total of more than 250 films from 190 children of ages 2 to 14½ years. The conclusions were: 1. For the group-study of children between the age when ossific centers have appeared and the age of incipient epiphyseal union the measurement estimates of skeletal age would be equivalent to inspectional estimates in comparing (a) average skeletal ages, (b) inter-child variation in skeletal age, and (c) average progress (average gain in skeletal age). 2. Because even "actual-size" reproduction in the preparation of an atlas causes a change in size, the measurement method, unless based on intermediates, does not permit reliable comparison, even of groups, with standard (atlas) children. This drawback could be removed by publishing, instead of an atlas, tables of measurement-age equivalents derived from current or future series of standard children's roentgenograms (actual films or intermediates) with some reproductions for guidance in measurement. 3. In the assessment of an individual child's skeletal age status or progress the differences between inspectional and measurement ages vary so greatly from film to film that the measurement method seems to be of little use; but for this purpose the inspectional method itself is very crude.

Calibration is the operation establishing metrological traceability of values of calibrated measuring instrument scale (or reference material) to stated reference. In the case of indirect measurement it is necessary to know the relationship between determined quantity values and corresponding measurand values. If mathematic form of this relationship is unknown, it is substituted by its approximation. In this process a real situation is simplified by neglecting of influence quantities to a relation of two variables- independent versus dependent. Metrological traceability of certified reference materials (CRM) values intended for calibration purposes and characterised by means of a method working on the base of approximative function could be questionable. If a measurement method based on original relationship already exists, it should be strongly preferred in the process of CRM certification to methods based on approximation of original relationship.

Canopy temperature (Tc) by thermal imaging is a useful tool to study plant water status and estimate other crop traits. This work seeks to estimate grain yield (GY) and carbon discrimination (Δ13C) from stress degree day (SDD = Tc − air temperature, Ta), considering the effect of a number of environmental variables such as the averages of the maximum vapor pressure deficit (VPDmax) and the ambient temperature (Tmax), and the soil water content (SWC). For this, a set of 384 and a subset of 16 genotypes of spring bread wheat were evaluated in two Mediterranean-climate sites under water stress (WS) and full irrigation (FI) conditions, in 2011 and 2012, and 2014 and 2015, respectively. The relationship between the GY of the 384 wheat genotypes and SDD was negative and highly significant in 2011 (r2 = 0.52 to 0.68), but not significant in 2012 (r2 = 0.03 to 0.12). Under WS, the average GY, Δ13C, and SDD of wheat genotypes growing in ten environments were more associated with changes in VPDmax and Tmax than with the SWC. Therefore, the amount of water available to the plant is not enough information to assume that a particular genotype is experiencing a stress condition.

To measure current stiffness and displacement stiffness of permanent magnet biased radial magnetic bearing, a new stiffness measurement method is proposed for magnetically suspended flywheel (MSFW). The detailed stiffness measurement method is proposed in this paper. At first, the suspension force and stiffness characteristics of the permanent magnet biased radial magnetic bearing are studied using magnetic circuit method and finite element method (FEM). Second, the detailed stiffness measurement method of permanent magnet biased radial magnetic bearing is proposed. It has two procedures, one is the determination of the magnetic center in radial magnetic bearing when the gravity of rotor is in the +x(+y) direction and −x(−y) direction, respectively, then the current stiffness can be obtained, and the other is the calculation of the displacement stiffness according to the relationship between rotor displacement and current. A prototyped MSFW with angular moments of 50 Nms is manufactured, and the proposed stiffness measurement method of permanent magnet biased radial magnetic bearing is verified by prototyped experiments.
