Warehouse performance measurement is needed to improve performance of logistics system. In order to improve warehouse performance, it is necessary to identify Key Performance Indicator (KPI). Different warehouses have different KPI, therefore this research aims to identify the most important KPI of warehouse so that warehouse manager can determine corrective actions in their warehouse efficiently and effectively. In this research, 25 KPI of warehouse are identified in five warehouse activities based on Frazelle model. The most important KPI are then determined in each warehouse activity using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). Warehouse performance are measured and final score is determined using SNORM. Improvement steps are proposed base on benchmarking among warehouses. Warehouse performance measurement is conducted in 5 construction’s material warehouses located in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. From this study, it is found that most important KPI for receiving is productivity (receive per man-hour), KPI for put away is cycle time (put away cycle time), KPI for storage is utilization (% location and cube occupied), KPI for order picking is cycle time (order picking cycle time) and KPI for shipping is productivity (order prepared for shipment per man-hour). Improving warehouse performance could be done by comparing warehouse performance with the best performance among peer group.

In the past few years, e-commerce is viewed as creating challenges and opportunities for business leaders and inter-disciplinary researchers. While most firms realize that it is necessary to assess performance of logistics system, the performance measurement of E-commerce logistics system still remains unexplored. This essay starts by discussing the measures and metrics of E-commerce logistics system from the strategic, tactical and operational level. Then, a methodology based on the extent fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is proposed to prioritize performance measurement indicators in E-commerce logistics system. The application of this methodology helps us to understand the performance of E-commerce logistics system and the results are useful both to practitioners in E-commerce firms and to researchers carrying out further studies in the field.

PurposeThird-party logistic providers (3PLs) continuously strive for controlling and improving their performances to gain a competitive advantage. The challenging environment where they operate is affected by high variety in type and number of clients, the inventory mix and the demand profiles they have to meet. Consequently, better understanding the dynamics of warehousing operations and the characteristics of the inventory mix is critical to handle such a complexity.Design/Methodology/approachThis paper proposes a decision-support framework, suited for 3PL warehouse practitioners, that aids to design and implement effective and affordable activities for measuring and improving the warehousing performances. Such goal is pursued by the framework by leading the managers through an initial mapping and diagnosis of the system, then by developing a tailored measurement system to track the performance, paving the way to the identification of the criticalities and the potential improvement scenarios.FindingsThis paper presents a case study on the implementation of the proposed framework at a warehouse of an Italian 3PL provider to introduce a new storage assignment policy and reduce the travelling time for order picking. Furthermore, the paper exemplifies how the framework contributes to enhance the awareness of managers on warehousing operations and the involvement of the personnel throughout the improvement process.Practical implicationThe proposed framework can be implemented by operations managers of 3PL warehouses who want to pursue general performance improvement projects. With respect to the case study, this framework contributes to identify the storage assignment policy that reduces the travelling for order picking in the observed warehouse of 8 percent in a month but is intended to address to even other areas of improvement in 3PL warehousing environments.Originality/valueInstead of focusing on the proper methods and models that optimize a specific task or performance indicator, it provides a general framework that leads the managers through the decisional process, from the preliminary diagnosis of the system, to its benchmarking, towards the implementation of corrective and improving solutions.

Continuous human population growth has led to increased livestock production and hence large quantities of animal byproducts. One of the oldest and most efficient animal byproducts processing techniques is rendering, which facilitates the recovery of resources in the form of fat and protein flour. The purpose of this study is to provide data for the feasibility of rendering as a treatment method. The case of a Greek slaughterhouse is presented, regarding its animal byproduct treatment process through rendering and incineration. Three different waste management scenarios are compared, with rendering proving to have a lower operational cost (€51.80/ton) compared to incineration (€74.10/ton), and rendering followed by incineration (€72.13/ton). The rendering process is then compared with other established animal byproduct treatment methods like composting and anaerobic digestion through the analytic hierarchy process, in terms of environmental, economic, and technological efficiency, with rendering (having a final score of 72%) proving once again superior compared to composting (with a score of 54%), and anaerobic digestion (with a score of 55%).

The paper presents the procedure for selecting a scenario for the development of the logistics system in a company with a developed trading and logistics network, but also with the significant supply problems. In order to solve the existing logistics problems, but also to respond to future requirements and business plans, four logistics system development scenarios are defined. Each scenario has certain characteristics which can be seen as the advantages or disadvantages in the comparative analysis. Since the choice of development scenarios depends on several factors, their ranking in terms of different criteria requires the application of multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods. A hybrid model based on a combination of the fuzzy AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process) and fuzzy VIKOR (Višekriterijumska Optimizacija i kompromisno Rešenje) methods was used to solve the problem.

AbstractThis paper proposes to measure the museums performance with a model that combines the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Balanced Scorecard (BSC) methodologies with a third method, the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), which is often used to support decision making. Starting from the two-stage DEA–BSC model of Basso et al. (Omega Int J Manag Sci 81:67–84, 2018), which integrates DEA and BSC, we explore the advantages to consider also the AHP methodology, with the aim to include the judgement of some museums’ experts on the relative importance of the BSC perspectives in the performance evaluation model. A first approach uses directly the AHP priorities derived from the judgements expressed by the museums’ experts interviewed to determine the weights to aggregate the four BSC performance scores into an overall performance indicator. A second approach uses the judgments of the museums’ experts indirectly to introduce proper restrictions on the output weights of the second-stage DEA model. With this approach, we overcome the problem arising from the dispersion of the preferences within the group of experts, that may heavily affects the first approach. Both approaches proposed in this contribution are applied to the case study of the municipal museums of Venice.

Gas Engine Generator (GEG) Power plants as electricity producers need to be maintained using monitoring performance and continuously improvements. Company management of power plant is difficult to make decision for continuous improvement, requires Performance Measurement Tools (PMT) to determine the performance of a GEG power plant. PMT developed using Key Performance Indicator (KPI) that was defined through Forum Group Discussion (FGD) with different field of expertise in company and based on references and the weighting of KPI criterion that was developed by Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). This study was a case study at leading medium energy company in Indonesia. PMT is a tool to calculate Performance Score (PS) from the calculation of actual data, contracts and KPI (Power Output/PO, Heat Rate/HR, Operation Ratio/OR, Capacity Factor/CF) weights. If there is a gap in the PS then it can indicate penalty from customer especially PO and HR. Case study was conducted on three power plants that have different capacity and number of engines. The sum of the PS from the KPI will get a Total Performance Score (TPS). The highest TPS value will get a Performance Benchmark (PB) for each power plant.
