The numerical approach based on the finite element method (FEM) for modeling of mechanical interaction between three-dimensional objects is presented in the paper. The model of contact is based on the assumption that the nodes of the region which is the source of contact cannot overlap with the nodes of the region being the target. The procedure of the detection of collision between surfaces of the source and the target is discussed in details. The behaviour of surfaces being in contact depends on their rigidity and is numerically modeled in the case of perfectly rigid source and deformable target. Each modeled object has an independent mesh of finite elements. These meshes can be freely moved relative to each other. Example of calculation using original program written in C++ is presented and discussed.

A phenomenological model focused on modeling the shape of such interface cracks and calculating the critical stress for steady-state propagation has been developed. The crack propagation is investigated by estimating the fracture mechanics parameters that include the strain energy release rate, crack front profiles and the three-dimensional mode-mixity along the crack front. A numerical approach is then applied for coupling the far field solutions utilizing the capability of the Finite Element Method to the near field (crack tip) solutions based on the J-integral. The developed two-dimensional numerical approach for the calculation of fracture mechanical properties has been validated with three-dimensional models for varying crack front shapes. In this study, a custom quantitative approach was formulated based on the finite element method with iterative adjustment of the crack front to estimate the critical delamination stress as a function of the fracture criterion and corner angles. The implication of the results on the delamination is discussed in terms of crack front profiles and the critical stresses, which can then be used as the framework for modeling reliability of advanced interconnects system.

Calculations of the centrifugal machines critical frequencies of the rotors are currently carried out on the basis of the finite element method using multi-functional software as same as ANSYS and other similar, that work with finite elements of the three-dimensional type, as well as some specialized computer programs working with the beam-type finite elements. Anyway, the finite element method is used. But in this case an user needs a lot of time for prepation of the initial data. Therefore, this article presents a calculation of the critical frequencies of the rotor of a centrifugal fuel pump of a liquid-propellant engine based on its discrete model. This calculation also includes an algorithm of results clarification. This model has been verificated by comparing the critical frequencies obtained in calculations based on the finite element beam model and discrete model with using the algorithm of results clarification and without it.

Rehabilitation with implant prostheses in posterior areas requires the maximum number of possible implants due to the greater masticatory load of the region. However, the necessary minimum requirements are not always present in full. This project analyzed the minimum principal stresses (TMiP, representative of the compressive stress) to the friable structures, specifically the vestibular face of the cortical bone and the vestibular and internal/lingual face of the medullary bone. The experimental groups were as follows: the regular splinted group (GR), with a conventional infrastructure on 3 regular-length Morse taper implants (4 × 11 mm); and the regular pontic group (GP), with a pontic infrastructure on 2 regular-length Morse taper implants (4 × 11 mm). The results showed that the TMiP of the cortical and medullary bones were greater for the GP in regions surrounding the implants (especially in the cervical and apical areas of the same region) but they did not reach bone damage levels, at least under the loads applied in this study. It was concluded that greater stress observed in the GP demonstrates greater fragility with this modality of rehabilitation; this should draw the professional's attention to possible biomechanical implications. Whenever possible, professionals should give preference to use of a greater number of implants in the rehabilitation system, with a focus on preserving the supporting tissue with the generation of less intense stresses.

Abstract The paper describes the intention of the authors to determine whether it is possible to predict relative belt edge endurance for radial passenger car tires using the finite element method. Three groups of tires with different belt edge configurations were tested on a fleet test in an attempt to validate predictions from the finite element results. A two-dimensional, axisymmetric finite element analysis was first used to determine if the results from such an analysis, with emphasis on the shear deformations between the belts, could be used to predict a relative ranking for belt edge endurance. It is shown that such an analysis can lead to erroneous conclusions. A three-dimensional analysis in which tires are modeled under free rotation and static vertical loading was performed next. This approach resulted in an improvement in the quality of the correlations. The differences in the predicted values of various stress analysis parameters for the three belt edge configurations are studied and their implication on predicting belt edge endurance is discussed.

Modern engineering practice requires advanced numerical modeling because, among other things, it reduces the costs associated with prototyping or predicting the occurrence of potentially dangerous situations during operation in certain defined conditions. Different methods have so far been used to implement the real structure into the numerical version. The most popular have been variations of the finite element method (FEM). The aim of this Special Issue has been to familiarize the reader with the latest applications of the FEM for the modeling and analysis of diverse mechanical problems. Authors are encouraged to provide a concise description of the specific application or a potential application of the Special Issue.

Разработан алгоритм и проведена оценка прочности сборных твердосплавных элементов со сплошной и дискретной рабочими поверхностями. Получены зависимости, позволяющие установить связь между конструктивными параметрами сборных деформирующих инструментов и их прочностью. Выполнены прочностные расчеты деформирующего инструмента для обработки отверстий значительного диаметра со сплошной и дискретной рабочими поверхностями. Численным моделированием, методом конечных элементов получены распределения эквивалентных напряжений в элементах инструмента и контактных напряжений по поверхности контакта твердосплавная вставка-корпус, что позволило проанализировать прочность инструмента под нагрузкой. Определены конструктивные параметры инструмента и приведены алгоритмы последовательности расчета сборных деформирующих элементов (ДЭ). Разработан алгоритм последовательности расчета сборного ДЭ для дискретного протягивания. Предложенная конструкция сборного рабочего элемента позволяет не только улучшить обрабатываемость изделия резания, но и уменьшить расход остродефицитного твердого сплава по сравнению с твердосплавным ДЭ аналогичных размеров на 6 кг. Полученные результаты можно использовать в инженерных расчетах при проектировании сборного инструмента для дискретного деформирования, а также для оценки прочности сборных инструментов, например, фрез, зенкеров, разверток при уточнении внешних нагрузок We developed an algorithm and assessed the strength of prefabricated carbide elements with solid and discrete working surfaces. We obtained dependencies that make it possible to establish a relationship between the design parameters of prefabricated deforming tools and their strength. We performed strength calculations of the deforming tool for machining holes of significant diameter with solid and discrete working surfaces. We obtained the distributions of equivalent stresses in the elements of the tool and contact stresses over the contact surface of the hard-alloy insert - body by numerical modeling, by the finite element method, which made it possible to analyze the strength of the tool under load. We determined the design parameters of the tool and here we give algorithms for the sequence of calculation of prefabricated deforming elements (DE). We developed an algorithm for the sequence of calculating the prefabricated DE for discrete broaching. The proposed design of the prefabricated working element allows not only to improve the machinability of the cutting product but also to reduce the consumption of an acutely deficient hard alloy in comparison with a hard alloy DE of similar dimensions by 6 kg. The results obtained can be used in engineering calculations when designing a prefabricated tool for discrete deformation, as well as for assessing the strength of prefabricated tools, for example, cutters, countersinks, reamers when specifying external loads

Abstract A finite element method (FEM) formulation is presented for the prediction of unknown steady boundary conditions in heat conduction on multiply connected three-dimensional solid objects. The present FEM formulation is capable of determining temperatures and heat fluxes on the boundaries where such quantities are unknown or inaccessible, provided such quantities are sufficiently over-specified on other boundaries. Details of the discretization, linear system solution techniques, regularization, and sample results for 3-D problems are presented.

This paper is concerned with the convergence of the h-p version of the finite element method for three dimensional Poisson problems with edge singularity on quasi-uniform meshes. First, we present the theoretical results for the convergence of the h-p version of the finite element method with quasi-uniform meshes for elliptic problems on polyhedral domains on smooth functions in the framework of Jacobi-weighted Sobolev spaces. Second, we investigate and analyze numerical results for three dimensional Poission problems with edge singularity. Finally, we verified the theoretical predictions by the numerical computation.

The paper presents modeling and calculations of multi-bolted connections at the assembly stage on an example of the engine cylinder head-block connection. The physical model of the connection was introduced as a combination of three subsystems: the set of bolts, the joined element and the contact layer between the joined element and the rigid support. The finite element method (FEM) was used for the modeling. Bolts were replaced with hybrid elements. The joined element was modeled with spatial finite elements. The Winkler model of the contact layer has been taken into consideration. The truth of the theorem has been examined, according to which non-linearity of the contact layer has a negligible impact on the final values of the bolt forces in the case of sequential preloading of the multi-bolted connection. The results of the calculations of a selected multi-bolted connection have been compared with the experimental results.
