A series of Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr(wt.%) {TNTZ} alloys containing either 0.1, 0.3 or 0.7(wt.%) oxygen (O) were room-temperature tensile tested inside a scanning electron microscope to evaluate the effect of O on the deformation evolution. The deformation modes observed for TNTZ-0.1O, which exhibited the largest elongation-to-failure and lowest strength of all the alloys, were deformation-induced α”-martensitic transformation, {332}<113> twinning, and <111> slip. For the other two alloys, <111> slip was the dominant deformation mode, where TNTZ-0.7O exhibited more homogeneous and extensive slip, a higher frequency of cross slip, and a higher work-hardening rate, all of which contributed to both its strength and elongation-to-failure being greater than that for TNTZ-0.3O. TNTZ-0.3O exhibited the greatest tendency for cracking, which generally occurred on grain boundaries perpendicular to the tensile axis, leading to the lowest elongation-to-failure of all the alloys.

ABSTRACTDiffusion bonded bi-PST crystals of three different series were prepared and they were deformed in tension at room temperature. Yield stress and elongation exhibited by bi-PST crystals consisting of component crystals with the lamellar microstructure aligned along the tensile axis do not significantly differ from those of component crystals. Plastic strain incompatibility at the interface exerts a strong influence on the deformation behavior of bi-PST crystals when the incompatibility activates additional deformation modes which are much harder than deformation modes operative in each component crystal.

The pore spaces in sandstones are the result of the original depositional fabric and the degree of post-depositional alteration that the rock has experienced. The largest pore volumes are present in coarse-grained, well-sorted materials with high sphericity. The chief mechanisms which alter the shape and size of the pores are precipitation of cementing agents and the dissolution of soluble components. Each process may operate alone or in combination with the other, or there may be several generations of cementation and solution. The scanning electron microscope has ‘been used in this study to reveal the morphology of the pore spaces in a variety of moderate porosity, orthoquartzites.

Larvae of the nematode, Steinernema carpocapsae Weiser strain All, were cryofixed and freezesubstituted for 3 days in acetone containing 2% osmium tetroxide according to established procedures. Following chemical fixation, the nematodes were brought to room temperature, embedded in Spurr's medium and sectioned for observation with a Hitachi S-4100 field emission scanning electron microscope that was equipped with an Oxford CT 1500 Cryotrans System. Thin sections, about 80 nm thick, similar to those generally used in conventional transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies were mounted on copper grids and stained with uranyl acetate for 30 min and lead citrate for 5 min. Sections about 2 μm thick were also mounted and stained in a similar fashion. The grids were mounted on an Oxford grid holder, inserted into the microscope and onto a cryostage that was operated at ambient temperature. Thick and thin sections of the larvae were evaluated and photographed in the SEM at different accelerating voltages. Figs. 4 and 5 have undergone contrast conversion so that the images would resemble transmitted electron micrographs obtained with a TEM.

A knowledge of the behaviour of dislocations in semiconducting materials is essential to the understanding of devices which use them . This work is concerned with dislocations in alloys related to the semiconductor GaAs . Previous work on GaAs has shown that microtwinning occurs on one of the <110> rosette arms after indentation in preference to the other . We have shown that the effect of replacing some of the Ga atoms by Al results in microtwinning in both of the rosette arms.In the work to be reported dislocations in specimens of different compositions of Gax Al(1-x) As and Gax In(1-x) As have been studied by using micro indentation on a (001) face at room temperature . A range of electron microscope techniques have been used to investigate the type of dislocations and stacking faults/microtwins in the rosette arms , which are parallel to the [110] and [10] , as a function of composition for both alloys . Under certain conditions microtwinning occurs in both directions . This will be discussed in terms of the dislocation mobility.

Leaded free-machining steel is used in production industry. However the use of the leaded free-machining steel is limited from an environmental problem. So sulfurized free-machining steel, not include lead, has been researched widely. In order to improve the machining performance of the sulfurized free-machining steel, it is necessary to find out the behavior of inclusion. The experiment was carried out to find out the mechanism of the surfurized inclusion on the machinability, using some kinds of materials which were changed the size of the inclusion. In orthogonal cutting, the deformation behaviors of the sulfurized inclusion in the work materials were observed in the vicinity of tool face. Cutting forces were also measured and finished surfaces were observed. Besides, low speed orthogonal cutting in Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) which was mounted a small cutting device was carried out in order to observe the deformation behavior more microscopically. As a result, it is clear that some inclusions creates voids around them and some broke to several pieces depending on their conditions. Moreover, in order to investigate the formation and growth of BUE, a quick stop experiment was done during turning. As a result, it is clear that the larger inclusions can reduce the formation of BUE.

Zirconia (ZrO2) nanotubes were synthesized by anodization of zirconium (Zr) foil in NH4Fand (NH4)2SO4 aqueous solution. Different surface preparation methods (electropolishing and etching) were applied on the Zr foil prior to anodizaton. In addition, the anodization time and NH4F concentration were varied. The structure and morphologies of the nanotubes and their crystallinity were confirmed using scanning electron microscope and x-ray diffractometer, respectively. ZrO2 nanotubes with large diameters and thick walls were formed at lower NH4F concentration and longer anodization time. On the other hand, smaller nanotubes with thinner walls were produced when the NH4F concentration was increased. The synthesized nanotubes were predominantly tetragonal ZrO2 with small amounts of monoclinic ZrO2.

The types, numbers and distributions of antennal sensilla were studied in both male and female adults of eight Acrididae species in Northeast China using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Totally, there were thirteen types of sensilla found on the antennae. They were identified as trichoid sensilla (I, II), chaetic sensilla (I, II), basiconic sensilla (I, II, III, IV, V), cavity sensilla, coeloconic sensilla, boehm's bristles and paddle-shaped sensilla. The types of antennal sensilla in each Acrididae species ranged from nine to twelve. Each of the species had the same types of antennal sensilla in male and female, and males had more abundant basiconic sensilla, chaetic sensilla, coeloconic sensilla, cavity sensilla than females. Acrida cinerca had the largest total numbers of sensilla, and Euthystria lueifemora had the fewest. Boehm's bristles had a concentration in the base of the pedicel. Paddle-shaped sensilla had a concentration in the base of the scape. There were significant differences in the distribution of the other eleven types of sensilla.

A new species of Tabularia, Tabularia sinensis, is described from the inland Poyang Lake (Jiangxi Province), the largest lake in China. The description is based on light and scanning electron microscope observations of valve and girdle elements. Given the diversity of forms in the genus, the relationships and status of the genus was investigated in the context of the other known species in the genus and to ascertain if Tabularia, as originally circumscribed, remains monophyletic.

Abstract Two types of borosilicate leached SON68-type glasses were studied, one doped with uranium and the other with rare-earth element (Nd, Eu). Photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence properties of U doped samples have been correlated to microscopic features of the corroded glass. Nuclear analysis, Electronic Microprobe and Scanning Electron Microscope investigations revealed the heterogeneous composition of the gels with differentiated phases. Enriched U phases (crystallised or not) and phosphorus precipitated phases in rare earth gel have been detected.

This paper presents redescriptions of amphipods in the genus Metopa (Stenothoidae) in the type-collections of the Zoological Museum of Copenhagen. For Metopa clypeata and M. abyssalis we redescribe the type-specimens, for M. glacialis and M. groenlandica the redescriptions are based on new material and checked against the type-specimens. For all except M. abyssalis a combination of new line drawings and scanning electron microscope (SEM) pictures is provided, for M. abyssalis, line drawings only. A summary of the other species having earlier been designed to Metopa in the Copenhagen collections is given, with a list of their present taxonomic position.
