The paper contains a study of the influence of thermal treatment of the 3D-printed polylactide parts in sodium chloride dust on the surface roughness of the manufactured part. The conducted experiment features annealing with the use of two different sizes of NaCl crystals and two levels of temperature. All the samples were made with natural polylactic acid filament using the fused deposition modeling (FDM) method. The samples were put into a salt scaffold and placed in the electric furnace to remelt the surface of the part while keeping pressure on the walls to prevent unwanted deformation. The results show that it is possible to improve the quality of additively manufactured component’s surfaces as long as optimal parameters are applied.

In this review, we discuss the parameters of fused deposition modeling (FDM) technology used in finished parts made from polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and also the possibility of printing small PEEK parts. The published articles reporting on 3D printed PEEK implants were obtained using PubMed and search engines such as Google Scholar including references cited therein. The results indicate that although many have been experiments conducted on PEEK 3D printing, the consensus on a suitable printing parameter combination has not been reached and optimized parameters for printing worth pursuing. The printing of reproducible tiny-sized PEEK parts with high accuracy has proved to be possible in our experiments. Understanding the relationships among material properties, design parameters, and the ultimate performance of finished objects will be the basis for further improvement of the quality of 3D printed medical devices based on PEEK and to expand the polymers applications.

In the present work, ten data mining algorithms have been used to generate models capable of predicting the surface roughness of parts printed on polylactic acid (PLA) by using fused deposition modeling (FDM). The models have been trained using experimental data measured on 27 horizontal (XY) and 27 vertical (XZ) specimens, printed using different values for the parameters studied (layer height, extrusion temperature, print speed, print acceleration and flow). The models generated by multilayer perceptron (MLP) and logistic model trees (LMT) have obtained the best results in a cross-validation. Although it does not obtain such optimal results, the J48 algorithm (C4.5) allows the generation of models in the form of a decision tree. These trees permit to determine which print parameters have an influence on the surface roughness. For XY specimens, the surface roughness measured in the direction parallel to the extrusion path (Ra,0,XY ) depends on the flow, the print temperature and the layer height; in the direction perpendicular to the extrusion path, the surface roughness (Ra,90,XY) depends only on the flow. For XZ specimens, the surface roughness measured in the direction parallel to the extrusion path (Ra,0,XZ) depends only on the print speed; in the direction perpendicular to the extrusion path (Ra,90,XZ), it depends on the layer height and the extrusion temperature. According to the study carried out, the most suitable set up provides values of Ra,0,XY, Ra,90,XY, Ra,0,XZ and Ra,90,XZ equal to 0.46, 1.18, 0.45 and 11.54, respectively. A practical application of this work is the manufacture of PLA frame glasses using FDM.

Fixtures are used for orientation, positioning and tightening of the workpiece during machining, control and assembly. The main fixture requirements are: orientation, positioning and tightening precision in accordance with the machining requirements. The materials used for fixture components, especially, supports and clamping mechanism are, usually, alloy steel with HRC hardness up to 55-60 HRC. These components are machined to high level of precision thus assuring the overall precision of the fixture. In order to achieve high stiffness and a good dampening capacity the fixture become, usually, very heavy. In the case of manually operated fixtures light weight is an advantage; also there are operations such as inspection, assembly where the operating forces are low. In this case lightweight materials can be used for fixture construction. In this paper the FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) 3D printing technology is used. Support buttons and v-block fixture components were selected and 3D printed. The effect of printing orientation of active surfaces of support was analysed. The dimensional accuracy and surface roughness on the active surface were measured. Experimental results indicate that surface roughness is dependent on the orientation of the printed workpiece.

Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is a rapid prototyping method, widely used in the manufacture of plastic parts with complex geometric shapes. The quality of the parts manufactured by this process depends on the plastic material used and the FDM parameters. In this context, this paper will present the results of a theoretical and experimental research on how FDM parameters influence the tensile strength and hardness of samples made of PLA (Polylactic Acid).

Purpose Fused filament fabrication or fused deposition modeling (FFF/FDM) has as one of its main restrictions the surface quality intrinsic to the process, especially linked to the layer thickness used during manufacture. The purpose of this paper is to study the possibility of improving the surface quality of polylactic acid (PLA) parts manufactured by FFF using the shot blasting technique. Design/methodology/approach The influence of corundum blasting on 0.2 mm layer thickness FDM PLA parts treated with two sizes of abrasive, different exposure times and different incidence pressures. Findings As a result, improvements of almost 80% were obtained in the surface roughness of the pieces with high exposure times, and more than 50% in just 20 s. Originality/value This technique is cheap, versatile and adaptable to different part sizes and geometries. Furthermore, it is a fast and environmentally friendly technique compared to conventional machining or vapor smoothing. Despite this, no previous studies have been carried out to improve the quality of this technology.

With the increase in popularity of 3D printing, an important question arises as to the equivalence between devices manufactured by standard methods vs. those presenting with identical bulk specifications, but manufactured via fused deposition modeling (FDM) printing.
