This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of acute phase blood pressure in patients with acute ischemic stroke by determining whether or not it contributes to clinical outcome. We studied 515 consecutive patients admitted within the first 48 hours after the onset of ischemic strokes, employing systolic and diastolic blood pressure measurements recorded within 36 hours after admission. High blood pressure was defined when the mean of at least 2 blood pressure measurements was ≥200 mmHg systolic and/or ≥110 mmHg diastolic at 6 to 24 hours after admission or ≥180 mmHg systolic and/or ≥105 mmHg diastolic at 24 to 36 hours after admission. The high blood pressure group was found to include 16% of the patients. Age, sex, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, atrial fibrillation, ischemic heart disease, stroke history, carotid artery stenosis, leukoaraiosis, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) on admission and mortality were not significantly correlated with either the high blood pressure or non-high blood pressure group. High blood pressure on admission was significantly associated with a past history of hypertension, kidney disease, the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) on discharge and the length of stay. On logistic regression analysis, with no previous history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, atrial fibrillation, and kidney disease were independent risk factors associated with the presence of high blood pressure [odds ratio (OR), 1.85 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.06-3.22), 1.89 (95% CI: 1.11-3.22), and 3.31 (95% CI: 1.36-8.04), respectively]. Multi-organ injury may be presented in acute stroke patients with high blood pressure. Patients with high blood pressure had a poor functional outcome after acute ischemic stroke.

Background It is crucial to assess genomic literacy related to stroke among Africans in preparation for the ethical, legal and societal implications of the genetic revolution which has begun in Africa. Objective To assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) of West Africans about stroke genetic studies. Methods A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted among stroke patients and stroke-free controls recruited across 15 sites in Ghana and Nigeria. Participants' knowledge of heritability of stroke, willingness to undergo genetic testing and perception of the potential benefits of stroke genetic research were assessed using interviewer-administered questionnaire. Descriptive, frequency distribution and multiple regression analyses were performed. Results Only 49% of 2029 stroke patients and 57% of 2603 stroke-free individuals knew that stroke was a heritable disorder. Among those who knew, 90% were willing to undergo genetic testing. Knowledge of stroke heritability was associated with having at least post-secondary education (OR 1.51, 1.25–1.81) and a family history of stroke (OR 1.20, 1.03–1.39) while Islamic religion (OR=0.82, CI: 0.72–0.94), being currently unmarried (OR = 0.81, CI: 0.70–0.92), and alcohol use (OR = 0.78, CI: 0.67–0.91) were associated with lower odds of awareness of stroke as a heritable disorder. Willingness to undergo genetic testing for stroke was associated with having a family history of stroke (OR 1.34, 1.03–1.74) but inversely associated with a medical history of high blood pressure (OR = 0.79, 0.65–0.96). Conclusion To further improve knowledge of stroke heritability and willingness to embrace genetic testing for stroke, individuals with less formal education, history of high blood pressure and no family history of stroke require targeted interventions.

Hypertension is a condition when blood pressure in blood vessels increases chronically (Suiraoka, 2012). The risk of increasing this blood pressure is related to race, family history of hypertension, obesity, diet / food intake, smoking and the length of time the combination hormonal contraceptive is used. Family acceptors who use hormonal contraception over a period of time often complain of health problems, one of the health problems that are often experienced by hormonal contraceptive acceptors is hypertension or high blood pressure. Hormonal contraception can cause high blood pressure (hypertension) in approximately 4-5% of women who have normal blood pressure before taking the drug, and can increase blood pressure in 9-16% of women who have suffered hypertension before. The type of research used in this study is quantitative, with analytic research design and with a cross sectional approach, namely research conducted simultaneously. The number of samples is 54 mothers who are KB KBtor. From the results of the study, it was found that respondents who used hormonal contraception experienced an increase in blood pressure by 37 people (84.1%), while those who did not experience a rise in blood pressure were 7 people (15.9%). Respondents who did not use hormonal contraception experienced an increase in blood pressure by 5 people (50.0%), while those who did not experience an increase in blood pressure were 5 people (50.0%). From the Chi-square test results obtained a value of 0,045 (Pvalue 0,045 <α 0,05) and OR 5,286. This shows that Ha is accepted which means that there is a relationship between the use of hormonal contraception and an increase in blood pressure. OR = 5,286 showed that the use of hormonal contraception 5 times was associated with increased blood pressure.

Objectives: High blood pressure among adolescents is not as researched as it is among adults, notwithstanding that hypertension in adults is being tracked back to childhood. This study identied the prevalence of hypertension among adolescents, the age related pattern of prevalence and associated risk factors. Method: A cross sectional study was conducted among university students who presented for preadmission medical examination. Blood pressuremeasurement was conducted and cut off reading was based on JNC VII classication for hypertension.  Results: A total of 952 students had complete data. Participants were aged 14 – 19 years with a mean age of 16.6 ± 1.03 years. Prevalence of hypertensionamong the adolescents was 6.4%. High blood pressure (HBP) distribution was as follows; systolic HBP (54%), diastolic HBP (31.15%) and combinedsystolic and diastolic HBP (14.75%). The risk factors significantly associated with HBP were male gender, obesity, overweight, alcohol, smoking and high blood sugar (p values 0.001, 0.039, 0.001, 0.016, and 0.001 respectively). However family history of hypertension was not significantly associated with hypertension (p=0.053). The majority of the adolescents with hypertension were unaware of the morbidity. Conclusion: Hypertension is identifiable in adolescents  and it appears to increase with age. Notable risk factors for hypertension in adults are also associatedwith hypertension among adolescents. Regular screening will improve awareness and help mitigate the complications of this condition.

Abstract The history of glomangiopericytoma began in 1924 when it was initially diagnosed by Stout and Murray. It is a rare tumour of the respiratory mucosa, with a prevalence of less than 0.5% among all sinonasal tumours. Literature shows female predominance among patients who develop glomangiopericytoma. So far, no accurate aetiology has been discovered, but there are certain risk factors, including trauma, use of corticosteroids and high blood pressure, which are believed to cause glomangiopericytoma. Patients usually present with a history of epistaxis or nasal blockage, though symptoms can get worse if the tumour is not resected timely and can lead to visual disturbance, chronic sinusitis and headache. It has reddish polypoidal appearance on examination. The best modality for the treatment of glomangiopericytoma is endoscopic surgical resection via trans-nasal approach.
