AbstractSmall bowel diverticulosis is a rare finding, with varied clinical presentations, which make the diagnosis difficult and delayed. Many cases are asymptomatic. However, it is an entity that can present with fatal complications. Here, we present a case of a 79-year-old male patient with diffuse small bowel diverticulosis, who presented with loose stools and acute exacerbation of chronic abdominal pain. Plain abdominal X-ray showed dilated bowel loops and pneumoperitoneum, which raised the possibility of bowel perforation. Computed tomography images revealed diffuse small bowel diverticulosis and pneumoperitoneum. Subsequent explorative laparotomy revealed no bowel perforation. Small bowel diverticulosis is a well-known cause of chronic/recurrent pneumoperitoneum without peritonitis or surgery.

Abstract We report the case of a 63-year-old patient with a low-velocity abdominal trauma and bowel perforation. The patient slipped on a wet floor and fell down the stairs. On admission, the patient complained about abdominal pain. A computed tomography scan showed traumatic hematoma of the jejunum in the left upper quadrant and a small amount of intra-abdominal air. Also rib fractures on the left side were diagnosed. We performed a diagnostic laparoscopy and found a bowel perforation, which was manually repaired.

A middle-aged patient presented with intermittent chronic abdominal pain without any obvious cause. Computed tomography detected a hernia (presumed to be the cause of the patient’s symptoms) without any obvious lump on examination. A laparoscopy was performed to repair the hernia. This revealed a left-sided unilateral ‘peritoneal recess’ at the level of the arcuate line extending medial to the linea semilunaris. No extraperitoneal sac or defect was noted in the rectus sheath or in the muscle, nor were any contents present in the recess at the time of the laparoscopy. We believe the bowel was being trapped intermittently in this space, causing the abdominal symptoms.

Abstract Background At present, the term mucocele is outdated, and mucinous appendiceal neoplasm is preferred. Mucinous appendiceal neoplasm is an uncommon pathology that occurs predominantly in middle-aged women. Its classification and management have been the subject of debate in recent decades. The aim of this study was to analyse the incidence, clinical management and survival of these tumours diagnosed in our centre in the last 10 years. Methods This was a retrospective observational study of patients with a diagnosis of appendiceal neoplasms between 2009 and 2018 in our centre. Variables such as sex, age, tumour type, clinical status, diagnosis, treatment and survival were collected. All data were analysed using the statistical program IBM SPSS Statistic® version 25. Results Twenty-nine patients with a diagnosis of appendiceal neoplasm were identified, and 24 corresponded to neoplastic appendiceal mucinous lesions (85.7%). The average age was 59.7 ± 17.6 years. Most patients were women (15 cases; 62.5%). Most of them presented with chronic abdominal pain (37.5%), and the diagnosis was performed by computed tomography (CT) (50%). The treatment was surgical in all cases. The surgical technique depended on the findings and histology of the tumour. Conclusion Mucinous appendiceal neoplasms are an uncommon entity, and their pathological classification and management have recently changed.

Phase-contrast synchrotron-based X-ray imaging using an X-ray interferometer provides high sensitivity and high spatial resolution, and it has the ability to depict the fine morphological structures of biological soft tissues, including tumors. In this study, we quantitatively compared phase-contrast synchrotron-based X-ray computed tomography images and images of histopathological hematoxylin-eosin-stained sections of spontaneously occurring rat testicular tumors that contained different types of cells. The absolute densities measured on the phase-contrast synchrotron-based X-ray computed tomography images correlated well with the densities of the nuclear chromatin in the histological images, thereby demonstrating the ability of phase-contrast synchrotron-based X-ray imaging using an X-ray interferometer to reliably identify the characteristics of cancer cells within solid soft tissue tumors. In addition, 3-dimensional synchrotron-based phase-contrast X-ray computed tomography enables screening for different structures within tumors, such as solid, cystic, and fibrous tissues, and blood clots, from any direction and with a spatial resolution down to 26 μm. Thus, phase-contrast synchrotron-based X-ray imaging using an X-ray interferometer shows potential for being useful in preclinical cancer research by providing the ability to depict the characteristics of tumor cells and by offering 3-dimensional information capabilities.

A 73-year-old female was admitted to our hospital with abdominal pain and diarrhea. Computed tomography detected distension of the small intestine. A palmar erythema, multiple oral ulcers, and desquamation of the fingers appeared after hospitalization. Small-bowel endoscopic images showed multiple ulcers. We attributed this case to infection with Yersinia pseudotuberculosis based on the changes in Y. pseudotuberculosis antibody titers throughout the course of the illness. This report is valuable, as it illustrates the endoscopic characteristics of a Y. pseudotuberculosis infection with skin lesion and ileus, which may enable us to deepen the pathologic understanding of this disease.

Abstract X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning of sawmill logs is associated with costly and complex machines. An alternative scanning solution was developed, but its data have not been evaluated regarding detection of internal features. In this exploratory study, a knot detection algorithm was applied to images of four logs to evaluate its performance in terms of knot position and size. The results were a detection rate of 67 percent, accurate position, and inaccurate size. Although the sample size was small, it was concluded that automatic knot detection in coarse resolution CT images of softwoods is feasible, albeit for knots of sufficient size.
